dgelks··on Show HN: Free mobile app demo creator
Yep! Plenty! This post is showing off a specific mobile demo creator tool that can be used independently from our original product.
dgelks··on Cutting Vercel Costs by 80% Without Compromising UX or DX
Writer of the article here and one of the co-founders of HowdyGo. Happy to answer any questions you might have!
dgelks··on Jd – JSON Diff and Patch
Was just using it to compare two massive json files, super performant and useful compared to using jq
dgelks··on Ask HN: What are you using to parse PDFs for RAG?
Previously have used https://github.com/pdf2htmlEX/pdf2htmlEX to convert PDF to HTML at scale, could potentially try and parse the output html to markdown as second stage.
dgelks··on Silicon Valley Bank vice president sentenced to 15 months in prison
Agree regarding the details - I'm guessing unrelated given the indictment was over a year before the collapse "On Jan. 13, 2022, a federal grand jury indicted Gad"
dgelks··on Ask HN: Founders, how much automated tests do you write?
Agree with this totally, additionally if you are unsure if you will proceed with an idea with no users, getting something done and receiving feedback as fast as possible is better than doing it perfectly the first time.

That said at my last company after 12 months we hired a few engineers so we had to transition to requiring tests for new functionality. This was just to stop regressions and make sure we could continue moving quickly.

dgelks··on Ask HN: Founders, how much automated tests do you write?
Last company, no tests for the first 6 months. Current company after 2 months, have some unit tests for complicated parts in place, will start writing tests once bugs are resolved.

I guess it really depends on what your company is doing, experience of the team and the language/tech you are using.

dgelks··on Show HN: HowdyGo – Interactive Product Demos
We aren't a video as we are recording the DOM directly so can still interact with the UI as well as perform replacements/updates quite easily.
dgelks··on Show HN: HowdyGo – Interactive Product Demos
Co-Founder of HowdyGo here, happy to discuss any questions people might have about the product or how we built it!
dgelks··on Ask HN: What's the best lecture series you've seen?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBYhVcO4WgI - How to Start a Startup 2014 by YC & Stanford

Amazing set of speakers and pretty timeless advice for starting a startup

dgelks··on Show HN: HowdyGo – On-Site Video Chat
Co-founder of HowdyGo here, would love any feedback people might have.

I built HowdyGo because at a former company I founded, we had a small addressable market, high-value leads, and unfortunately very long sales cycles.

Our customers needed time to build trust in the product we offered and that meant it was a necessity to have actual conversations with them, not text chats.

Have a chat with me or my co-founder here or by heading to the link and clicking on the widget!

dgelks··on Ask HN: How to learn sales?
Similar background to yourself as an engineer, not in sales but as a co-founder often find the sales process a big part of my job.

We've implemented Strategic Selling see https://www.amazon.com.au/New-Strategic-Selling-Successful-C... which provides a great structure for us and a unified language inside our organisation.

Maybe not as useful if you're just trying to get started but does provide a structure to understand the sales process and why a sale closes or doesn't close.

Yeah we did rebrand, very small world indeed

Thanks! We have engineers based in the US, EU/UK and AUS at the moment. Agree that timezones outside of 5 hours is tricky but I think we do a decent job.

dgelks··on 600k concurrent websocket connections on AWS using Node.js (2015)
I found this article very useful to resolve connections moving to xhr polling on our Node.js 10.16 server https://medium.com/@k1d_bl4ck/a-quick-story-about-node-js-so...
dgelks··on 600k concurrent websocket connections on AWS using Node.js (2015)
Yep - title should've had [2015], my bad!
dgelks··on Caltech glassblower's retirement has scientists sighing (2016)
Article is not available in EU due to GDPR
dgelks··on Ask HN: Providing cheaper EdTech tools for rural zones
Nice to see something new going on in EdTech space! I'm the CTO of bibliotech.education, a subscription textbook company and happy to have a chat regarding collaboration or contacts in either the US or Europe.
dgelks··on REST is the new SOAP
Thanks for this - Stylish add-on for chrome also works nicely too!
dgelks··on Ask HN: Self-taught developers, what repo helped land your first job?
For me it wasn't actually a repo but doing a lot of https://www.codewars.com challenges until I was proficient enough in js to pass the technical interviews
dgelks··on Ask HN: What the best way to optimize images in S3?
For this sort of work I found using a lambda function with a trigger on s3 upload works very well, aws-lambda-image seems like a popular project to use instead of writing your own code https://github.com/ysugimoto/aws-lambda-image
dgelks··on Ask HN: What are pros and cons of PostgreSQL and MySQL?
Just downloaded and will investigate - thanks!
dgelks··on Ask HN: What are pros and cons of PostgreSQL and MySQL?
We didn't select MySQL on the basis of having SequelPro obviously, that would be insane. However if you are still using MySQL and want to switch over to PostgreSQL (like us) a major reason not to be not having SequelPro. Most other factors about PostgreSQL are better but just not enough for the effort to migrate to be worthwhile.
dgelks··on Ask HN: What are pros and cons of PostgreSQL and MySQL?
Agreed, Sequel Pro is far above anything I've seen in Postgres and is the primary reason we are still using MySQL in production - business team just love Sequel Pro too much
dgelks··on Ask HN: What services are down because of the S3 outage?
Medium, Imgur, Yahoo Webmail & Docker Registry Hub!
dgelks··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
Getting the same error on the GUI but the aws cli and sdk seem to be working fine (our site is still up too)
dgelks··on Show HN: A better PC builder for the US, more parts and Ryzen (Ask HN follow-up)
Very useful tool, will definitely send people who want a new computer here as their first stop. Unfortunately the website doesn't open very nicely in Safari - seems fine in Chrome though
