dgabriel··on Fuck it, make it anyway
That's most people. You have a day job that pays the bills, and you have your passion and art that fulfills you. You had the great temporary luck to have both for a bit, but it's not coming back. I don't feel sorry for us, and it's not helpful to carry so much animosity.
dgabriel··on Fuck it, make it anyway
> I wish I could press a button and erase everyone who thinks that way from existence. How dare you devalue my experience and passion so offhandedly and treat it like I'm the asshole for being upset by it.

It's possible that wishing instant death on people may make you unpopular. But also, maybe you're a poet or artist now. No one makes money of the years of toil it takes to become an expert at that craft, either. If the craft is important, then the money is secondary, and no one will ever stop you from writing code the way you love to, they just won't pay you to do it that way.

dgabriel··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
We don't want your static ID, we want where and what you are at this moment in order to better tune the algorithm. Your ID is frozen in time, so at any given moment, big tech knows more about you than the government does. IDs are only good for minimal verification purposes.
dgabriel··on Maybe We Shouldn't Be Reviewing All This Code
I mean, we certainly are in a lot of cases. Spec driven development is waterfall, and we're all in the midst of a new experiment to see if it works. I'm not sold, but consultants love it.
dgabriel··on Htmx 4.0
Out of curiosity, are you defaulting to vanilla js in your agentic dev stack? Or do you have the llm use a framework like react?
dgabriel··on I like 'em thick: an apology to my English teachers
Hacker news comments aren't private, and they shouldn't be private. I find it interesting that you think your own public soapbox declarations should not be discoverable.
dgabriel··on Claude Code May–August 2026 weekly limits promotion
I'm curious about your specific use case, if you're comfortable sharing it here.
dgabriel··on What happens if an entire class of workers loses faith in their careers
I'm not sad. As an engineer with decades of experience under my belt, I'm really excited about how AI can democratize software and help me finally complete long-simmering side projects, create value for the greater good, and be a generally fun thing. So far, I have not found myself even remotely replaced by AI at work.
dgabriel··on Proof of care in the age of AI
This misses the point.
dgabriel··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
This is exactly me. I'm grateful that real medical solutions exist.
dgabriel··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
I did a lot of things, but all of them required a massive amount of sustained effort. I like that I can order the food I want to eat at a restaurant without looking up all the calories before I go. I like that I can just live my life without food thoughts taking up 60% of my brain space at any given time.

For some people, diet and lifestyle changes help control blood pressure. Other people need to take meds for the rest of their lives, anyway. We don't shame them for it.

dgabriel··on What Ozempic does to the gut-brain axis
I understand calorie balance. I've been on a diet since I was 12 years old, and am now approaching 50. I've lost and regained the same 60lbs about 4 times now. I have logged every bite that goes into my mouth, and lived with a constant hunger for as long as I could take it. Then I ate until I felt satisfied and gained it all back. I know how many calories are in anything, and I can eyeball any serving size. I've been doing it for decades. When I take GLP-1s, I can just stop. My appetite and body maintains itself at a healthy weight, and I don't cry myself to sleep from either hunger or shame.

I think I'm not the ignorant one.

dgabriel··on We haven't seen the worst of what gambling and prediction markets will do
It's also a real world event that can be influenced by the existence of the bet.
dgabriel··on We will ban you and ridicule you in public if you waste our time on crap reports
It's the easiest possible way for large entities to jump on the AI bandwagon. They're definitely asking for it.
dgabriel··on Tell HN: Vim users, `:x` is like `:wq` but writes only when changes are made
Same (but for a longer period of time). I'm kind of surprised people don't know this.
dgabriel··on The lost ways of programming: Commodore 64 BASIC (2020)
This is exactly how I learned to program. My brothers only liked playing the games, but I preferred making my own (generally based on source code listings in the back of BYTE magazine).
dgabriel··on People with low BMI aren't more active, they are just less hungry, 'run hotter'
My brother underwent this surgery, and not only did the weight come back, he developed a serious drinking problem (he's in recovery now). Apparently, this a known side effect. All it really did was make his life much harder in the long run. Hunger is more that the physical feeling of fullness.

dgabriel··on The Beer Game (1992)
Forio has a digital version https://forio.com/app/showcase/near-beer-game/

I was on a team that wrote a beer game app for HBS, and the rules are really simple. It's not really worth playing more than once, though.

dgabriel··on Florida governor to investigate GoFundMe over Canada trucker donations
GoFundMe tells a lot of people who they can or cannot send money to via their platform. First, there are laws around sending money to designated terrorist organizations, then there are restrictions around violence, pornography and sex work, and many more. The giant list can be found here: https://www.gofundme.com/c/terms

If you want to mail a check to these truckers, have at it, but GoFundMe is not obligated to collect money on their behalf. Here's another example, but not one Ron Desantis would ever care about - https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20200131-gofundme-shuts-us...

dgabriel··on The Medieval Queens Whose Daring, Murderous Reigns Were Quickly Forgotten
This is whataboutism; you have no proof that people who care about one thing don't also care about other things. Also, calling people you disagree with "woke" and claiming they "virtue climb" (what does that even mean??) is intellectually lazy.
dgabriel··on A Beginner’s Guide to Chart.js
I would personally recommend Highcharts for that. https://www.highcharts.com/gantt/demo
dgabriel··on Stack Overflow Inc. Fiasco: Timeline
What? You can't say "call me they/them," rather you can only say "don't call me him/her/or any other pronoun besides they"? That's very silly.

Clarification of rules, even to the point where they may seem redundant, is completely fine and often important. This is such a weird hill for them to die on.

dgabriel··on Suicide Rates Among Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States, 2000-2017
You can crunch fake, sort-of-made-up numbers all day. The average man doesn't exist. My point is that it's certainly possible to be living paycheck-to-paycheck in a city with what was once a decent salary, even if you aren't blowing all your money on frivolous stuff.
dgabriel··on Suicide Rates Among Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States, 2000-2017
That's a good point I missed.
dgabriel··on Suicide Rates Among Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States, 2000-2017
Add a car and student loans, a reasonable food and fitness budget, and that's all of it gone.
dgabriel··on Suicide Rates Among Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States, 2000-2017
The US is a big place, and schools vary wildly.
dgabriel··on Suicide Rates Among Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States, 2000-2017
Even that is only important a little bit. Excelling at a mid-tier university is completely FINE. It's so much harder to get into an Ivy League school now than when I was applying in the 90s; I'm not pushing my child to the brink for a tiny blink of undergrad prestige.
dgabriel··on Suicide Rates Among Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States, 2000-2017
My son is a junior now in a very competitive high school, and they had to do away with valedictorian/salutatorian because the difference between that and, say, just top 5% would be a 99.6 vs a 99.4 in one class in the 10th grade. It was so stressful for these kids, like it even fucking matters long term.
dgabriel··on Berlin approves 5-year rent freeze
That's sort of the opposite of my experience, where everyone couldn't wait to get out of the stultifying small town, where there was no work and no future.
dgabriel··on Dad, Are We Rich?
I grew up with an engineer's family income, and 250k still seems pretty wealthy. That puts you in the top 5% of US earners.
