dgabriel··on Ask HN: I need ideas to impress fifth graders with technology
I volunteer for Black Girls Code, specifically the 9-11 year old age group, and the last thing I did that really blew their minds was build an Obby in Roblox. Almost all of them have watched youtubers go through them. Get one working, modify it, have a kid or two modify it on their own.

dgabriel··on Millennials and Gen Z Increasingly Pessimistic About Their Lives, Survey Finds
In the last 6 years, my rent has gone up by about 800/mo. It's the same apartment.
dgabriel··on Hard Part of Computer Science? Getting into Class
Academic career paths are completely broken, which is why universities can and do get away with it. The problem is not that these instructors aren't "people of talent."

This article is mainly concerned with the humanities, but it covers well the issues at stake: https://www.chronicle.com/article/The-Great-Shame-of-Our/239...

dgabriel··on Hard Part of Computer Science? Getting into Class
Many schools rely on adjuncts and lecturers to teach. They get paid very little, have no job security, no benefits, etc. But because the academic career path is so completely broken, lots of of very smart, talented instructors take on these jobs to make ends meet while they look for something else that allows them to pursue their passions with their extensive educations.

Don't look down on these people. They're smart, they work hard, and they deserve better.

dgabriel··on It all made sense when we found out we were autistic
My 8 year old daughter is on the spectrum (diagnosed level 1; normal IQ in the 110ish range), and the diagnosis has helped us get intensive in-school support. She's doing well academically, but needs support in writing and social skills. Her diagnosis was essential to getting her the help she needs.

I also highly recommend living in a place with a decent school system and a well staffed special education department. Without that, my daughter would be floundering academically and socially isolated.

dgabriel··on The Challenges of Being in the New Contract Workforce
But possibly not easy for an Uber driver, rather than a highly skilled tech worker.
dgabriel··on Mothers who regret having children are speaking out
Wait -- you edit your college-aged child's essays??
dgabriel··on Mothers who regret having children are speaking out
I mean, they definitely talk about how the specific demands of modern motherhood are exhausting. Here's a quote:

"Feeling trapped or suffocated is a common theme in Donath’s work; mothers felt “as if the metaphorical umbilical cord binding them to their children were in fact wrapped around their neck.” Many women said they felt pressured to have children. So did German novelist Sarah Fischer, author of Die Mutterglück-Lüge (The Myth of Mothering Joy: Regretting Motherhood—Why I’d Rather Have Become a Father), published in 2016, who writes she knew she’d made a mistake “when the contractions started.”

Adoption is expensive, difficult, and often heartbreaking. I hate it when people casually throw out adoption as a solution without understanding anything about the process.
dgabriel··on The Real Danger to Civilization Isn't AI. It's Runaway Capitalism
The government controls a LOT of what we can buy already. Sex work is highly regulated, and you can't buy people. You also can't buy endangered animals, ivory, or nuclear weapons.

In terms of people spending money on what they want, people spend lots of money on opioids and it ruins their lives, or kills them. Should doctors and pharmaceutical companies not be bound by any regulatory body? Should people just be allowed to OD on fentanil because they want to spend their money on it?

dgabriel··on Silicon Valley Asks Mostly for Developers with Degrees
I just leave off the education part on my resume. This has literally never been a problem for me, and most requirements I see say something like "BS or equivalent experience".
dgabriel··on Cyclops: a programming language written in undeciphered Greek runes
Toy languages are fun, and nothing new. Making your own language is a great exercise.
dgabriel··on Who's doing this to my internet?
Music execs set that expectation, and artists just have to live with it. http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/branding/1559631/...

"During those meetings it was Warner executives, not Jobs as is commonly thought, who suggested tracks be sold for 99 cents. At the time, many labels wanted to price tracks at $3.49 each. But not Warner.

“When we told Steve, he looked at us like we just gave him a gift,” Vidich recalls. “We knew we needed to alter consumer behavior in a big way. Below $1 was an emotional threshold for people. It became an acceptable impulse purchase.”

dgabriel··on Why We Shut Down Reddit’s ‘Ask Me Anything’ Forum
Right, "sign this, stay quiet, we'll give you a year's salary." It's hard to turn that kind of an offer down unless you have a lot of money in the bank.
dgabriel··on How Can There Still Be a Sex Difference, Even When There Is No Sex Difference?
Some aspects of gender expression are social constructs, but certainly hard-coded gender identity is real. This is a spectrum, and there are many people who don't identify as either gender, but somewhere between. You don't have to be a TERF to say that something as vague as "science ability" can't possibly be measurably linked to sex or gender. (one of my children is transmasculine, but he also likes to paint his nails and wear glitter. we refuse to assign him any sort of gender expression box, and still respect that he is a boy).
dgabriel··on How Old Do I Look?
I took three pics of myself with Photo Booth just now, and depending on the lighting and position of my chin got 20, 34, and 47. I'll take the average?

dgabriel··on How One Stupid Tweet Blew Up Justine Sacco’s Life
Um, sometimes? HN is big, and there are crossover populations.
dgabriel··on When arts die, they turn into hobbies
No, his argument is that "major art" is widely consumed by people who do not practice it. He uses poetry -- consumed by a small audience of people who almost entirely consider themselves poets -- as an example of "craft." I disagree with his definitions here. They aren't meaningful.
dgabriel··on When arts die, they turn into hobbies
No... that's not true at all. Books like Lolita, Catch-22, Animal Farm, and To Kill a Mockingbird are all considered literary fiction.
dgabriel··on When arts die, they turn into hobbies
And even now we have spoken word and slam poets that sell out clubs & college gigs, and make ends meet on that. They are profound exceptions. And, also, Shakespeare's profits would be almost entirely due to his plays.
dgabriel··on When arts die, they turn into hobbies
There's never really been any money in poetry for people who were just published poets. "Great" poets were all subsidized by patrons, worked in odd jobs or other mediums, or died in penury (sometimes all three)! The same is true now as it was 200 years ago.
dgabriel··on When arts die, they turn into hobbies
I'm not sure I buy this argument. By his criterion, porn is more or less the major art.
dgabriel··on Facebook was down
No one has anything else to do tonight, I guess.
dgabriel··on Women in Science
I'm an actual woman in computing WITH kids, and I found the article offensive, as well. There's something in there for all of us to dislike.
