dferlemann··on Why Chinese Is So Damn Hard (1992)
pretty close, except 神马 actually means Godly Horse, 神么actually means God? Not really funny when I explain it out, it's the typo and pronunciation variance that's kinda funny.
dferlemann··on Xkcd: Heartbleed Explanation
If it can reply whatever you requested accurately, then the established 2-way communication can be said to have the same quality.

how stressful is this line of work? what's the payoff? and how to get started?
dferlemann··on Is the U.S. stock market rigged? [video]
don't write programs if you have less than 10 years of programming experience; your horrible code will make programmers all look bad. BTW. no one's gonna hire you if you have less than 10 years of programming experience in a specific language.

I always enjoy people's weird logic.

dferlemann··on Don't Ban “Bossy”
> LOL. How does this not apply: "As a boss I should treat my employees the way I would like my boss to treat me." Any reasonable person understands that the professional context means that the relationship between boss/employee is not the same as friend/friend, stranger-on-subway/stranger-on-subway.

Because not everyone is like you. You are assuming everyone can separate personal life with professional life. That would be probably ideal, but doesn't happen often base on my observation. I find it's especially rare among highly talented/creative employees. Army ants, yes, it would be fair.

> That is a terrible, contrived example based on some strange concept/stereotype/cliche of military leadership. What branch of the service were you in? Did your well respected NCOs run around acting like the guy from Office Space and pester people about their TPS reports?

Ain't we all generalizing here? And yes, I have a boss like that, and female, too. What's your point?

dferlemann··on Don't Ban “Bossy”
My general impression about being a boss is that "one should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself" does not apply for such situation. Like business should focus on customers, leadership style should focus on employees. Some boss set example according to their value and standard, employees might just not appreciate that.

For example, a military style boss might value be at work on time, get your timesheet input on time, etc. and does an good job keeping them in check. Most innovative people with ENTP (rational inventor) personality people, or simply creative people will not appreciate that a bit. Result is low employee retention regardless of benefits. Well... that's just an example.

This applies both to male and female bosses. Things I observe in ineffective leaders:

Female bosses automatically associate their ineffective leadership with their gender; Male bosses acts like higher ranked military personnel in an inappropriate setting (like growupkids mentioned); Bosses fail to reevaluate their leadership style based on the data (most productive people keep leaving, they are generally 'kind' enough not giving you the real reason); Bosses do not have actual authority (this happens a lot in Federal Government, bosses can't really fire employees, it's just terrible business); ...

Fuck the world. He's action is true to himself. For that, I respect the guy.

causalities... :)
dferlemann··on What Happens When the President Sits Down Next to You at a Café
It ceases to be cool when your grandmother just liked your relationship status...
dferlemann··on World's First Massive Online Degree Program Starts Today
That's my general impression as well. That's why I didn't get a master in CS rather a MBA which is kind of relaxing and fun (my company offered for my master degree, otherwise I'd never go... ). Pretty much all CS master courses not that much in depth in comparison to an engineering master degree. And all these tech degree are quite "generic", which greatly reduce their usefulness in real life.

I feel like graduate school are for people who do not know what they want or interested in at the moment. Once they do, you already locked up in that degree plan, and have no time to go ahead implement the idea.

I much prefer to take classes from edX-like course education sites which I'm not obligated to anything. Once I feel I got a hang of this new field, I can just go and do my stuff.

dferlemann··on Nassim Taleb: We should retire the notion of standard deviation
Too bad no upvote button. I agree with you. I find the comment also a little too worked up with a little useful counter argument. I agree STD has its uses in situations. Nassim is not saying to get rid of the concept, but more like saying a lot of people are not using it correctly. I don't know why so worked up about that... Quite a lot of pointless insults.
dferlemann··on Tortured by the Japanese in WW2, a former POW met his tormentor 50 years later
I am certainly touched by this. I'd forgive a guy like that and many other Japanese who admit to their horrific acts. I don't like generalization such as saying I forgive Japan, nor would I say Japanese are monsters. So long the stubborn politicians still exist, there will always be sting on Japan's reputation as a country.
dferlemann··on Tortured by the Japanese in WW2, a former POW met his tormentor 50 years later
There are existing Japanese military documents on the subject... Writings of Japanese officers admitting to it and publicly asking for forgiveness. Yeah. Money at stake huh?
dferlemann··on Report: 47% of U.S. Jobs At Risk of Being Automated Out of Existence
Not even an estimated time schedule. Not like it's gonna suddenly drop 47% employment next year. It would be a slow process of replacing laborious jobs to intelligent jobs. Adapt and survive, isn't that how it suppose to be?
dferlemann··on Ask HN: What is the must have feature of your IDE
cannot live without (from VS): - syntax highlighting obviously - THIS IS BIG: open IDE with unlimited number of instances. I forgot which IDE annoyed me on this one... IntelliJ? - reference lookup - intellisense - code (unit test) coverage map, unit test project integration - ability to make my own extension, add-on, macros, etc - SCM integration, detect file change and indicates which files have been changed in source panel. - code map ...

want but have not encountered: - source panel file structure that allow me to open files in different apps of my choice. detects file type. - simple, un-confusing, customizable UI - all shortcuts need to be customizable ...

dferlemann··on Anti-ageing compound set for human trials after turning clock back for mice
As a man in my 20s, I welcome the challenge. What's fair or not fair about it? I'd be thrilled to work in a world with more competent people around.

I'm thinking more in the form of technological trade.
dferlemann··on Qian Xuesen dies at 98; Co-Founder of JPL and China's space program (2009)
Back I was in China, I remember reading news that appears Chinese government was really happy Dr Qian was forced to return. Dr. Qian is really high profile in the sense of academic achievement. I don't think there is high enough salary to attract him back to China with his own free will. It got me thinking. Speculatively, is it possible that Chinese government made a deal with US government secretly to get him back? There are a lot of deals between two governments...
dferlemann··on Revisiting why incompetents think they’re awesome (2012)
It depends on the person. Some after that worked hard not only on technical expertise but also on self-esteem. Some were indignant and convinced themselves they don't want that job anyway, all people on that level are incompetent managers.

Some people focus a lot more to be good at the job/skill, incompetent ones focus more on promoting him or herself. Result is quite obvious in short-run.

Being competent on a skill or certain job does not really correlate well with being competent on knowing thyself, either. I guess a lot of people are trying to find out what they really want, thus during that pursue become more competent. Incompetent people know very well they want, that promotion, and willing to cheat in order to get it.

People both competent in skills and self knowledge tend to become more confident. That's the kind of confidence both solid and humbling. Not some empty bubble can't carry any weight that can only exist in big company environment.

dferlemann··on Revisiting why incompetents think they’re awesome (2012)
I find competency does not correlate well with level of confidence. Therefore, being confident does not mean incompetence. IMHO, confidence is a state of mind, and competence is a state of being. A lot of people get them mixed up. I know really competent people always think they are inadequate therefore don't even try to ask for the promotion they well deserve, then realize some incompetent guy bloated himself/herself into that position and quit afterwards. It's a shame really.
dferlemann··on Why I Will Never Go Back to the United States
This is not a logical issue. It's an emotional one. So, it depends on the person. Wouldn't you held anything against a country if that's country's border control detained you, denied the services you paid for, denied the properties you have in the country, treated you like a sub-human? Would you try to enter that country again? Try, just try to be empathetic...

dferlemann··on The iOS 7 review
I have always feel the old skeuomorphism UI is a pretty good design. It's quite unique and doesn't give me "color panic attack" because it has depth perception... I like Flat UI that are simple and clean, like few of Microsoft design these days. That's why I don't think iOS 7 gets it.

I think Apple is trying to capture low-end market using iPhone 5c (well... China), yet the production is not efficient enough to make it significantly cheaper. It's also a failure because Apple consumers are not that price sensitive. In addition to gold version of iPhone 5s (for the vain), and flat UI I upgraded last night, if their only innovation is finger print scanner, I'm not impressed at all at Apple this year.

dferlemann··on The iOS 7 review
If you gonna say UI in general, Apple's iPhone and iPod interface were designed first before Android caught up... Microsoft is even later... just saying. If you are talking about flat UI, then yes, Android advanced it. However, I agree 5c and flat UI make the current Apple reek insecurity.
dferlemann··on He got 1%, we can't hire him
I agree. I am working with people have these 3 types of characteristics. This 3-type categorization is way too simplistic to describe an individual. I find no problem working with them. People are interesting. They all have some kind of quirks and behavior patterns. It's important to be tolerant and adaptive. But people with strong technical depth is really hard to come by.
