df41··on Wuhan scientists: What it’s like to be on lockdown
I happen to know an organizer of https://www.gofundme.com/f/wuhan-does-not-believe-in-tears and donated to them. I think there is another bigger one from Wuhan University alumni too.
df41··on Why China won’t own next-generation manufacturing
My sample is definitely skewed, since it is just like a dozen of upper middle class friends. However, your argument may be flawed as well :)

It is possible that Chinese immigrants are on the rise, but it is not like a Chinese person can easily immigrate to US, legally or not. Comparing the number of Chinese and Mexican is a bit silly, because of the "undocumented".

The number of Chinese students is meaningless as not every student wants or can stay. The number of H-1b may mean something but my feeling is that Chinese are getting less in recent years. Do you have actual data? The green card applications is more direct evidence, but some real data showing the trend would be useful.

Anyway, I think if there is no pacific in the middle and there is no wall at the border. At least 100 million Chinese people would love to move to US...

A funny thing is when I was talking to a lot of friends in China recently, while they like america in general, they believe the Chinese system is superior to the western "democracy". Do not get me wrong, they blame the Chinese government for many things rather fiercely at the same time.

I somehow feel like they are overly optimistic but could not find any proof to refute their point (talking about the current US election clearly did not help...). They are mostly upper middle class who worth more than me. So I guess they may be biased? However the taxi drivers seem to have the same view.

An anecdote: none of them want to immigrate (at least to US) and their only major concern seems to be the air quality. Since they can buy everything else from overseas anyway.

df41··on I Was the Most Wanted Man in China
He is a great scientist. I think he is a bit naive in politics. Maybe going to US was what he wanted and was good for him. Nobody knows.
df41··on China Cuts Mobile Service of Xinjiang Residents Evading Internet Filters
I suspect that no one would care unless you do something evil (but nowadays people use the thing called internet). I found an active forum www.hellocq.net via a quick google search and there are >100 posts today.

For most of the people, there is no need to communicate "with the outside world".
df41··on China's booming middle class is creating world's most dynamic consumer market
This sentiment is wide-spread in US. I think it is a combination of systematic propaganda and ignorance of general public.

The money they spent does not lie... Look at the 2014 sales record of BMW and Audi.
df41··on U.S. Drops Charges That Professor Shared Technology With China
I agree. My university had a Chinese full professor who was leading a large center with multi-million funding. My roommate was his student. FBI knocked his door because he had talked about something sensitive over the phone. I guess there was nothing serious because nothing happened except that FBI agents gave a talk to all the faculty members about keeping secrets. The professor, after a couple of years, took a job offer from a Chinese university.
df41··on Chalkboard drawings frozen in time for 100 years discovered in Oklahoma school
So the chalkboards that were just removed have been used for 100 years?
df41··on A Face Recognition Algorithm That Outperforms Humans?
I am not in the area but Xiaoou is not nobody in the area. He used to work (or visit) at MS Research Asia and Chinese Academy of Sciences. He had best paper award from CVPR and served as chair of ICCV. That all being said, we all know how research goes... I am just curious why they put it on arxiv. Is this a common practice in the CV area or is it because someone else is working on a similar approach?
df41··on Why Chinese Is So Damn Hard (1992)
Tell me about it. I still do not understand why you need to put am after I but is after he. Isn't it clear 'I is' is different from 'he is'? Another thing troubling me is whether to reply yes or no on questions like "didn't you agree?". I also think it would be nice for English to have more compound words like "sunflower". I am not even starting on the cultural part yet, since I am still studying the evolvement from illegal to undocumented.
df41··on China's Jade Rabbit lunar rover dies on moon
I spent 2 minutes with google and it seems the closest I could get is this: http://news.qq.com/a/20120625/000134.htm Basically it says the total spending on manned space missions is less than RMB 40B from 1992 to 2013. That translates to about 6.7B in current ratio.

2 NEST to send man to space. Not too bad IMO.
