devocracy··on Fortunately, I don't squash my commits
That's not a squash or not problem, that's a your tickets are too large problem. If you normally end up with 3000 line feature commits, you're trying to do too much with individual feature changes.

That was the fogbugz approach, I hated fogbugz as it was too prescriptive

It sure would be "unfortunate" if they replaced autocratic rule with a representative democracy.
devocracy··on Slack will never replace email
Is there not value to be gained when someone is struggling to get past a problem? I've seen what happens when people too quickly phone a friend whenever they hit a problem, the end result being they don't round out their knowledge.

The Ecobee has been great, simple and just works. I received it for free from some in-home energy program, but I will buy another when I move.

Not sure why you're being downvoted, the switch has done wonders for my cardio
devocracy··on Lyft Files S-1
If that were true (I have no info either way), wouldn't that mean most drivers have no clue the true cost of working for Lyft/Uber? All they see if free money, but aren't factoring in repairs.

I'm curious to find out what people define as fizzbuzz, do you have a good example of something you've asked in the past?
devocracy··on GitHub dashboard UI refresh
That may be true on windows or some flavours of desktop Linux where simple windows management have existed for some time (windows 10 being a real champ of multiple frame management on the same display), but if you're on a Mac you're stuck with a real mess that requires a lot of manual screen size management.

Those of us living in the frozen wasteland that is winter in the rest of Canada can definitely not relate!

If I get a marked as spam notification, I'll strip anything after the '+' (and really any special characters that distract from the raw email address) to make sure I never send an email to the address again.

Most math is useless to 95% of the population. I can't remember the last time I used any of the teachings of my calculus heavy undergrad.
devocracy··on Google Tech Dev Guide
I'm 15 years into my career and have yet to be destroyed for not taking the time to learn the details of every abstraction I utilize. That seems like a massive wasted effort when I could be busy adding value to the products I'm building vs becoming an expert at all things.

As a landlord, I don't want my tenants renting to people I haven't had a chance to vet. At least if I'm taking on the risks or ABnB I'm also reaping the rewards. Good luck collecting from my tenant if their hotel guests damage the property.
devocracy··on The faster you unlearn OOP, the better for you and your software
Refactor, with the right IDE this should take minutes. OOP witbout something like intellij or VS.NET is not fun.

That's the craziest thing ive ever heard, Easter egg to disable bad security options. What is this a video game?
devocracy··on Job-hopping increases, in possible boon to wage growth and productivity
The slavery of foreign workers looking to employers to sponsor them on their path to citizenship. We have a similar program in Canada, and it's really sad to see talented people stuck at dead end jobs making crap money, all because their employer is their visa sponsor. It's even worse in the lower wage sectors with temporary foreign workers.

devocracy··on Lead is even deadlier than was feared
With an ever expanding world population, possibly on the verge of unsustainable, would a plummeting birth rate necessary be a bad thing? Sure it would mean redesigning how we see the world (the retirement and economic models), but we can either tackle it now or when it's forced upon us.

Are you more in-line with Confluence, as a place to build a database of knowledge in the organization?

This is purely my opinion, so please take it with a large grain of salt. I'm not a fan of videos and won't last long enough on a site to sit through them unless I've arrived there from a referral (there is too much software out there that does the same thing, so time is at a premium). I'm more of a fan of descriptive workflow/image showing what the software does and keeps the value prop simple.

As an example, this marketing site impressed me greatly and I actually took the time to read through the different features as it was easy to follow and I didn't feel flustered by each of the feature explanations: https://www.contactually.com/how-it-works

My only gripe, there is no cohesive single blurb explaining how all these features fit together in a complete package. Their tagline at the top is weak, but visually they've nailed it.

Also, having to sign up for a demo kind of sucks and slows down the process of me getting to try out your product to evaluate if it meets my needs. I'd love for our industry to move towards a "here is a sandbox, have fun for a few minutes" model which would be completely painless for folks evaluating the tool. After a couple of minutes it could nudge you to sign up for a full trial account.

devocracy··on Google Calendar should prevent spam by default
If they were worried about the underlying problem of merge conflicts, the easiest solution would be the creation of a private notes field for any event shared with you. That way any event updates wouldn't collide with personal notes and you wouldn't need to duplicate events.
