devn0ll··on Unity U-turns on controversial runtime fee and begs forgiveness
> They basically did the standard thing of "we're sorry for how we communicated this the first time around, but we're still doing it, and we've scheduled a Q&A so we can give you more information".

Even worse, it was typical corporate laywer speak for "saying sorry without admitting to anything"

The text they said: "We are sorry for how this has been received." That does not mean anything. You're saying that Unity is sorry for how we logically felt? That means you are putting the blame for the reactions back onto the customers! That we "somehow" did not understand "well-enough"

Besides, even if they did nullify this change (which they did not) it is now a "partner" you cannot trust again. Ever.

A dutch proverb: "Trust comes on foot, but leaves on the back of a horse." It's hard to earn it, and extremely easy to lose.

It's also a warning to not be overly reliant on 1 "partner" So going to unreal is not really an option either. They are now also tainted by this insane thing Unity did.

devn0ll··on Sorry, Your Paper Coffee Cup Is a Toxic Nightmare
I still feel like this banning of plastic cups and straws is an attempt to make me feel guilty for using it. Just like "personal carbon footprint"; trying to blame the climate crisis on regular people.

All the while large companies and a few large boats in international waters are doing the actual polluting.

I don't want to feel guilty anymore and not be able to act upon it.

devn0ll··on Ubuntu Desktop: charting a course for the future
Snaps.. I would not have minded it so much where it not for the fact that Canonical is:

1. keeping the store part of it closed. 2. forcing the use of snaps on me.

Those two feel really off to me, like a poison-pill.

devn0ll··on Mozilla Standards Positions Opposes Web Integrity API
Also make DRM the abbreviation of "Digital Restrictions Management", which from the users perspective it is.
devn0ll··on VanMoof, the e-bike startup, officially declared bankrupt in The Netherlands
I would say that this company is a prime example why "right to repair" should be the default. Companies go bankrupt all the time but that should not mean the end of the product you bought and own for as long as you can fix thing yourself.

p.s. They mention they are "proud" of what they accomplished. In light of all the e-waste they have generated, I would dial that way down...

devn0ll··on Mastodon has hit 2M active users today
It's already way more active then google plus ever was ;-)
devn0ll··on France is fighting to save your iPhone from an early death
Even better!

Thing I was trying to say is they are using "theft" as a way to "build in" planned obsolescence and preventing us from repairing things.

devn0ll··on France is fighting to save your iPhone from an early death
If Apple would supply the parts.. This would also not be a problem anymore.

Besides, I'd rather that my stolen phone is useful to someone (even if not me) then thrown away by me after a year. As long as the software made sure nothing of my data is recoverable.

No, I'm sorry but this tactic is nothing but anti-consumer and anti-green.

devn0ll··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
This is the correct way to make people think.. Not: YOU NEED TO GO TO [OS.NAME], but asking them: "why are you putting up with this?"

"Have you looked at _any_ other alternative?"

devn0ll··on Mastodon hit 10M users
I might be off-base, but I feel this is a very American thing to do: argue. In school there a even debate classes yes?

Much better, I think, is to have a truth finding conversation together. Perhaps coming from different sides of the story, but always on the search for trying to find common ground, the truth, science, and an open mind to be changed by those things.

And not see the whole thing as a match to be won you know?

devn0ll··on Google Reader shut down announced ten years ago today
+1 (something else that was killed by google but still everyone knows that means)

I used freshrss, and got to this article via RSS as well. It's my only source of news. I'm usually the first to know about new stuff in my circle of friends because of my carefully curated RSS feeds.

devn0ll··on Meta just gave thousands of employees poor performance reviews
I worked at a company where you could only get a raise when you scored high on the performance appraisal. I was young and really worked my ass off, really went for it.

Never got a good appraisal.

Years later I work at another company, and my previous manager is now my team colleague. He eventually tells me: Yeah, we where not allowed to give more then two people, in our department of sixty, a high appraisal. Since we did not want to give people a raise.

He agreed it was shitty, but he was just middle management and had to play ball.

I was naive; working hard does not get noticed, it does not matter. Learning what the managers actually want and making them dependent on you is what gets noticed and rewarded.

It's just sickening. So I went freelance.

devn0ll··on Hetzner continues its growth in the US with a new location
It is because of this, I had to move four of my customers away from Hetzner. Since they just did not want to be in the "sphere of US influence".

Choices for EU only companies are getting smaller, and this is a real let-down.

devn0ll··on Tech CEO fired two engineers for having second full-time jobs
I'm a IT freelancer. And I have switched from hourly jobs to "projects". I do not get paid by the hour, I get paid by the project.

Now I do multiple jobs at the same time, while waiting on one, I work on the other. And as long as the job is done: all is well, no one should care how many hours I spent on them.

Perhaps we should all move to the "what needs to get done" mentality and get paid for the job and not for the hours present.

In that case it no longer matters how many companies I work for.

devn0ll··on Ask HN: What tools are you a 10/10 on?
This. SSH is one hell of a gateway drug to get people into linux ;-)

Like a swiss army knife.

devn0ll··on Framework Laptop Mainboard
I use pop!_os 22.04 beta with wayland and fractional scaling 125%. Some software needs to be told to use wayland stuff, but otherwise it is sharp as a tack.

For instance: MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 firefox

devn0ll··on B1txor20, a Linux Backdoor Using DNS Tunnel
> `MaxSessions 1` is a serious but good impediment of such an initial and lateral vector, one that should be implemented at all Jump and Bastion SSH servers … by default.

Really? Is that not exactly what "jump" means? To be able to hop to the next ssh server through this one, by means of ProxyJump ?

devn0ll··on Ask HN: Do I have to host all data in the EU to comply with GDPR?
As I have understood it from a lawyer: US laws require a company to hand over the data wherever the data is located. EU, Japan, whatever. You are a US company, so hand it over.

EU law states: EU data shall not leave the EU.

Those two bite each other, and the result is that a company can _never_ bow to both laws.

So, if EU data must be kept in the EU, choose a (hosting) company with no ties to the US. Vice versa is no problem, the EU law _does_ respect data locality.

It is the reason why we had to move away from Hetzner, when they opened a US office/branch.

If you require a web hosting company that has absolutely no connections to the USA, then unfortunately, we may no longer be the best choice for you)

devn0ll··on Why I Prefer Makefiles over Package.json Scripts
May I also direct your attention to self-documenting Makefiles:

https://www.thapaliya.com/en/writings/well-documented-makefi...

devn0ll··on Ask HN: Why do companies issue crappy machines to developers?
It is the reason why I hammer on BYOD beeing supported or not during the interview. "Can I use my own machine with Linux on it, do your tools/tooling allow that use case"

There is sooooooo much work out there looking for devops people; that, for me, it's a numbers game. And for the companies; a struggle to provide such an environment.

So far so good, and I'm having a blast. It's amazing what a difference having a nice dev experience / setup can make in you day to day work.

devn0ll··on macOS Setup after 15 Years of Linux
Completely fully disagree with you. My colleagues, friends and a family member have been using Linux for years now. I myself started using Linux full time for about ten years now.

I'll never go back, Windows and Mac cannot touch the experience with a ten foot pole. And Mac does not even begin to know what window management is.

I know, it's anecdotal. But claiming that Linux is not viable on the desktop is just plain silly.

devn0ll··on Ask HN: What is your preferred notebook screen size and why?
THIS! Yes, I very much would like 14" 3:2 or even een 16:10 would be sufficient.

A lenovo T series, AMD, 16:10/3:2 14" laptop. Wow.

devn0ll··on Pandemic homeschoolers who are not going back
Ah, now that I'm rereading my own comment I see I'm beeing a bit "flippant" (?). Please believe me I did not mean in that way.

So what point am I making: I've read that schools are teaching creationism, others spend 80% of their time on sports, something with greeting the flag every morning with a speech?

A lot of time is spent on teaching how to make arguments (How to plead your case) instead of trying to work together in finding truth.

And most of all: do not criticise, but a "do as told" mentality.

Again: Sorry for that almost mean-spirited first comment of mine.

devn0ll··on Pandemic homeschoolers who are not going back
As a Dutchie as well: I Agree. And also this is, I think, the reason why the USA is so far behind the rest of the world at the moment (in regards to reality): An open, honest and factually based education.
devn0ll··on Thinkpad X230 with “e-Ink” display at 30fps [video]
Absolutely fantastic! I saw the post on Reddit and I immediately thought "WANT IT".

Black and white in direct sunlight? And color in the shade, development dream this thing. (At least for me that is)

Shame the company behind it does not really exist anymore.

devn0ll··on Amazon plans to ‘return to an office-centric culture as our baseline’
The world has changed @amazon. We've moved on. We want options.
devn0ll··on Semaphore – Modern UI for Ansible
I've noticed that I used Ansible less and less because of kubernetes.

Now we also use crossplane.io and we never touch terraform anymore as well.

It's all helm charts now here.

devn0ll··on Background noise cancellation for online meetings
Sounds like a great addition! Are you perhaps also planning a linux version in the future?
devn0ll··on ‘I get better sleep’: the people who quit social media
It's been years since I had Facebook and Instagram. I stopped whatsapp recently, no longer have Imgur on my phone, etc, etc.

Slowly I'm getting my attention span back, Only recently have I been able to read an article online completely again.

It's bad for you. Truly. It's an addiction and a hard one to get rid of.

devn0ll··on Useful Kubernetes Tools for 2020
Before I even went to the article I thought to myself: If this list is missing k9s and kubectx/kubens, then the whole article is basically a fluff piece.

lo and behold... It's a fluff piece. And stolen from another source.
