devilduck··on Ask HN: Best Alternative to Homebrew in 2021?
User error. You should have known about pinning versions. If this is the reason you want to change package managers, you should consider this. Either that or maybe macOS isn't the OS for you. Try gentoo.
devilduck··on Please stop calling dopamine an addictive rewarding neurochemical (2017)
Maybe choose a different word then since it's obviously creating confusion and misconception about what dopamine does
devilduck··on Tech-savvy audiences block Google Analytics
This is a hilarious take, thanks for the laugh!
devilduck··on Working from Bed
I will never do anything you have recommended and I will still be as productive as you are. Thanks though!
devilduck··on Working from Bed
If I never have to go back into an office routine again, my life will be much, much better for it. To each their own.
devilduck··on Working from Bed
I've been doing this for years, my back is fine, and I'm 40. Cut this nonsense out.
devilduck··on The Dunning-Kruger Effect Is Probably Not Real
To me it ends up feeling like people who say things like "people are stupid" and use the Dunning-Kruger effect to hand wave away harder socio-psychological problems are projecting their own insecurities of their lack of knowledge and can be safely ignored
devilduck··on How to Use Anki to Improve Your Memory
Maybe start by using it to remember git commands, or something of that nature
devilduck··on macOS Big Sur
that's pretty weird. I have catalina on my work machine and i haven't rebooted for weeks except for the most recent patch update
devilduck··on RIP Google Music
Plex is fantastic except the direction they seem to be going with how they monetize is questionable. Streaming from private servers is definitely The Way though, in any case
devilduck··on Why's (Poignant) Guide to Ruby (2004)
You're allowed to like both things
devilduck··on The Gods on Hacker News
I love HN but reading the comments is sometimes the most eye rolling thing I could possibly imagine doing. Devoid of humor and personality in favor of some kind of robotic logic-only approach. I get some people want it to be purely academic but it's a public forum and is inherently non-academic. And that doesn't even mention the "impartial" moderation. It's no wonder HN commenters get made fun of mercilessly outside of HN.
devilduck··on How to Navigate Being the Only Woman on Your Team
The easiest way to not be an interrupter is to be quiet until it's your turn to talk or when someone asks you a question. Whatever you have to say can wait, no matter how relevant it is. If it's important, write it down for later. This is not that difficult.
devilduck··on How to create minimal music with code in any programming language
You can use jack or soundflower to pipe audio into Live from the outside.
devilduck··on How to create minimal music with code in any programming language
That's neat, but doing sound design and creating listenable/good compositions are two different endeavors. You'd likely be better off writing an actual DSP engine in C than trying to diddle with frequencies in this way. Use Supercollider if you actually want to make music with code rather than just do little experiments like this.
devilduck··on The Right to Read (1997)
There's an old idea that once you release something you have created into the wild it is no longer really yours, but ours. Copyright and IP have never really prevented artistic theft, just slowed the ability to make money using someone else's IP. However, when you consider things such as the success of "Old Country Road" where a core characteristic of the song was a sample not originated from the artist themself, you can see how copyright and IP law really don't mean anything in the world of art. Information still wants to be free
devilduck··on Do things that don't require scale
Let us never forget that some people enjoy doing things the hard way, whether it is pragmatic or not. Things are built by people and people will always build their personal idiosyncrasies into their projects. They will over-engineer things to scale that do not actually need to scale.
devilduck··on Google's Sundar Pichai says future of office is employee 'on-sites'
It's a good thing this will not be as normal as it used to be. The rest of us who think it's poor quality operation will get to be more picky with who we choose to work for.
devilduck··on The Era of Visual Studio Code
Agreed. Converting other people is a fool's errand anyway. I am interested in things like EditorConfig to allow some similar settings between editors so that individual team members can use whatever software they like without affecting general code style. But I don't think EditorConfig is end-game and there's room to grow in this area.
devilduck··on I no longer build software
The issue isn't so much the trajectory, but the people in the industry. I've been repeating for a while now that there are too many people who are not team players, who are basically still cowboy coders, looking to scratch their own personal technical itches rather than working together to build good software. This has been my experience for the last 5 years at least. It definitely reminds me more of the 90s, when the industry was a mess because it was new and growing. My issue is mostly with the people though, not the actual work. Lots of self-righteousness. Lots of people wanting everything to be on 'hard mode.' And as someone else commented, there is definitely a Stockholm Syndrome with the money involved since I now can not do anything else and maintain my life. Nor has this industry made it easy to change jobs. Nobody wants to train, everyone seems very cheap, but they want to hire Kobe. I am counting the days before I get broken.
devilduck··on Efficiency is dangerous and slowing down makes life better
Pace is relative and I think teams will generally average out in terms of pace. Finding a pace that fits you and your style would be an essential factor in having better work efficacy. My boss works really fast, works constantly and is probably a workaholic, a pace which I can not and will not try to match, so I have to work at my own pace and this throws off how project planning goes because the PMs are used to his pace and don't give me an optimal amount of time on projects, so I will find myself rushing which of course makes me feel bad and triggers my impostor syndrome. Eventually this pace will break down and become unmanageable for me and I'll have to quit, which will hurt their production even more.

Pace and efficiency are definitely linked, but I don't necessarily know that I think faster = more efficient. And there are folks mentioning stability, also definitely linked here, but i think max efficiency would lean more into stability than pace.

Linking pace with efficiency also seems to create the idea that "faster will be the winner" which, you know, that's a whole thing, introducing competition in an arguably healthy way.

I generally tend to find that emotion will usually come before logic. Building something that could be considered efficient, but a feeling says "This could be more efficient" and then logic jumps in and does the work.

Just some stream of consciousness writing here, food for thought maybe, or extremely poor quality ideas!
