devdad··on Show HN: Baby Buddy
You shouldn't need these kind of apps. Listen to your child. They communicate quite clearly what they need, and after a while you understand their patterns.

This is one of those areas where I believe technology will do more harm than good

devdad··on Facebook Shouldn’t Be Allowed to Buy Tbh
A bit off topic but true. You don't deserve down votes in my book.
devdad··on Google Payments API
Thanks. So it's for people looking to build their own Stripe?
devdad··on Google Payments API
I don't get. I really don't. I think I've looked everywhere but I can't find it. What's the pricing?
devdad··on MongoDB shares jump more than 30% in $192M IPO
This is me - I had taken SQL at uni and found MongoDB to be much easier to reason about since I knew my frontend parts already. One of the apps I've built has a terrible database structure (my first real life server setup!), and is probably the worst codebase I've ever written. I will never show it publicly. It currently serves 100k+ users and the users have no idea how messed up the server code is. It won't scale to a million users, but that's okay and the technology served me well as a junior.

I since turned to RethinkDB and sometimes just a classic SQL will do, but Mongo is really easy to get started with.

devdad··on Show HN: UnderExpress – A free, ready to use website UI kit for hustlers
I think hustler is to the startup CEO what ninja is to a developer. Leaves you wondering if the IT sector is run by high schoolers.
devdad··on Micro Front ends – extending the microservice idea to front end development
I actually take it one step further and have classes such as `border-1-px border-dark border-bottom standard-margin no-margin-top`. Seem weird at first but combined with flexbox (if your target is the evergreens) you never overwrite and you got one stylesheet for pretty much all of your projects. It's a real production boost.

Really not a fan of CSS-in-JS. I like to keep my components JS+JSX only.

devdad··on Jeremy Corbyn: Imagine an Uber run co-operatively by their drivers
And Uber has from the start been anti-worker by it's pure existence. Their "successful" business model is based on illegal business actions, evading laws and regulations and turning poor people into API calls. Uber is also still losing lots of money. Which is often a great place to start turning the business into worker owned and aligning it with the workers best interest.
devdad··on Jeremy Corbyn: Imagine an Uber run co-operatively by their drivers
Well, this doesn't even contradict what Corbyn is saying. Corbyn is saying that new technology should be used to enable a more socialistic society and having Uber as a broker isn't really needed if the tech development is shared between the drivers.
devdad··on Ask HN: Are Glassdoor reviews a reliable indicator of a company's culture?
> It doesn't make it any better ux though. FYI, the way to make them stop is to say 'yes i'll write a review', wait for the app store to load, and then close it. They usually won't prompt you again.

No, I didn't mean that it somehow turned into great ux. I meant that I understand the rationale behind it nowadays.

devdad··on Ask HN: Are Glassdoor reviews a reliable indicator of a company's culture?
I often struggle with app store reviews, because people that are satisfied won't go and rate the app out of the blue. Non-technical users that can't follow an industry standard sign up flow will go completely nuts and give one star with completely insane comments.

I used to believe that the "please rate my app"-popup was bad ux. Now I know why it's used.

I'd think the same pattern applies to GD. Why would I write a review when satisfied with my work? I'd have no reason to even visit GD.

devdad··on What If We Put Warnings on IoT Devices?
I did not know this. I do not think cookie warning == site tracking. Many of those pop-ups are people thinking they need it due to the law.
devdad··on An anarchist takes on Big Pharma by teaching patients to make their own meds
Just read the Wikipedia for Anarchism[1] and feel that it correctly reflects what it means. The one thing that is striking with the article's definition of anarchist is that it seem to refer to anarcho-capitalism (similar to neoliberalism) more than actual anarchism. It at least paints Laufer as a hypocrite if he were to identify as a "true" anarchist since "Anarchism is usually considered a far-left ideology" (Wiki). See the references to upperclass restaurants and upperclass behaviour such as drinking champagne and eating scallops at pricey restaurants.

A common misinterpretation of the term is believing that anarcho-capitalists and anarchists are the same, they're not. They're more often opposites.

1. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchism

devdad··on An anarchist takes on Big Pharma by teaching patients to make their own meds
I get the feeling that the author really dislikes Laufer. The whole article comes across as wanting to smear his character as a rich, egoistic crazy person with hubris. I don't know what kind of anarchists you got in SV, but wtf:

> He said this over lunch at an upscale French bistro in the Silicon Valley, where he orders Champagne and sauteed scallops. “If you really take the time to smell the scallops,” Laufer said, inhaling luxuriantly, “you can feel the ocean.”

I really disagree with the commentators that feels that this is an article aimed at lifting Laufer.

devdad··on How to Set Up a Company in Germany for English-Speaking People
Thanks for clearing that up, I now realize I was being misleading.
devdad··on How to Set Up a Company in Germany for English-Speaking People
Is the finances of a UG/GmbH public information in Germany and easily obtained by citizens?
devdad··on How to Set Up a Company in Germany for English-Speaking People
This is the same as an AB. Many start by having €5000 and then selling things they own such as computers to the AB, to get the funds "back". I think Sweden changed from €10000 to €5000 a couple of years ago.

If the UG or GmbH goes belly up, am I in any way personally responsible?

devdad··on How to Set Up a Company in Germany for English-Speaking People
Is that correct, €25000 to start a GmbH? The Swedish equivalent (AB), probably some differences, costs ~€5000.

I think the registration cost another ~€150.

devdad··on The Depression Thing
With respect, and as pure anecdote based on myself, "run a mile" is really good advice. I've dealt with depression since puberty and the main thing that helps me is excercise.

Lifting, getting punched with gloves or preparing for a marathon works wonders for me (not said as an opposite opinion than the author, but as a datapoint).

And please, if you're dealing with depression, you need to find out what works for you. Friends and family can help you find your way back, but they can't make the decision. When you decide - you - to take steps for coping with it nothing is impossible.

The author has sound advice on where to start. I'd just like to add that it can take quite some time, and that's ok, because life is long and you'll look back at this period and thank yourself for acting on it.

devdad··on Solo founders with profitable businesses, collected stories
This is my dream (careerwise). Just quitting the consultancy doing my own products. How do you attract people that will eventually become the community?
devdad··on Show HN: Dffer – Get notified when a website changes
I'm building a product in kinda new market. I'll use something like this to keep up with other landing pages.
devdad··on Show HN: Dffer – Get notified when a website changes
For me, $5 for not having to setup cronjobs is worth it.
devdad··on Show HN: Single-file components for React
Not to be rude, but I fail to see what the use case is for this. You can already use CSS in React and a component is often CSS, JS and JSX. What's the win here?
devdad··on Ask HN: How to turn job offers into consulting gigs instead?
Were you open from the start that you didn't look for employment?
devdad··on When I asked Tinder for my data, it sent me 800 pages of my deepest secrets
Uhm. I'd guess they'd be able to pull it from chats easier than what you're suggesting.
devdad··on The chances of making a successful mobile app are almost nil
Apps that are anchored in the real world is a space that still has plenty of room. But they also require lots of extra work, since physical goods or actual people are involved.
devdad··on The power of a 'not-to-do' list
I only book external meetings Wednesdays and during lunch. If next Wednesday is full, the meeting goes on to lunch date or the week after. We're a small shop and all of our employees have to do this (noone is only sales, everyone is part of our code base). Works great for us.

Internal meetings are kept short. 30 minutes each morning, 30 minutes after lunch.

devdad··on The true cost of an Uber ride is higher than it seems
This is so absurd - a company that loses $1.27 billion is seen as a market leader. Only in tech is this a possibility. A manufacturing company would be closed for years before they can even achieve such losses.
devdad··on AR.js: Efficient Augmented Reality for the Web
It asked me for permission, I gave it, and it worked really smooth. No problems here.
devdad··on Show HN: MyTweetAlerts – Like Google Alerts but for Twitter
Cool idea and product. Small bug report: The landing page ends with a </html> as a text node.
