devb··on Google Maps shows sunken car where missing man’s body was found
They don't look that stagnant to me? Each one seems to have multiple inlet/outlet pipes, and the next pond over has an aerating fountain. If they were truly stagnant the car wouldn't be visible.
devb··on Google Maps shows sunken car where missing man’s body was found
I see them in my area on flightradar24, running very consistent grids like this one: https://www.flightradar24.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/0...
devb··on Physicists finally nail the proton’s size, eliminating an anomaly
Authors don't always have a final say on what the headline will be. Sometimes they don't have any say at all.
devb··on A Radioactive Lens (2018)
I wonder if there were any environmental or health issues associated with the manufacture and finishing/grinding of these lenses. The EU forced camera manufacturers to stop using leaded glass a while back because of worker's health.
devb··on Empress trees absorb about 103 tons of carbon a year per acre
Paulownia tomentosa. Known in my area as the princess tree, but also goes by royal paulownia, foxglove tree, kiri, and empress tree.

devb··on Why play a music CD? No ads, no privacy terrors, no algorithms
> indie music stores like Bandcamp are digital only

Many bands on Bandcamp offer bundles of vinyl, CDs, t-shirts, etc. with the digital download. One example off the top of my head:

devb··on No one, not even the Secret Service, should randomly plug in a strange USB stick
According to the Times:

>Mr. Alles was told to develop an exit plan before the arrest of a Chinese woman carrying a malware-laced device at Mar-a-Lago, exposing holes in the security of the private club.

devb··on Have you been faked?
> how would I go if I wanted to harvest large numbers of "real" photos of "real" persons?

I guess you could just steal them from Flickr?

devb··on Nasa captures images of supersonic shockwaves
It is a Schlieren technique, but in this case a series of images taken over a textured background are then processed with software in a way that amplifies the differences in air density. This page goes into a little more detail:

devb··on Gum disease–causing bacteria could spur Alzheimer’s
Do you have a brand/model recommendation?
devb··on Earth’s magnetic field is acting up
Compasses manufactured for the northern hemisphere have extra weight added to the "south" end of the needle because the "north" end is partially being pulled toward the ground as well as the north magnetic pole. So your compass probably just wouldn't work at all.
devb··on Train ferry
Very doubtful. The NYNJ system is not very high capacity, doesn't have an easy connection to passenger lines in New Jersey, the connecting lines aren't electrified, and would leave passengers in the far south end of Brooklyn.
devb··on Multiple gas explosions and fires in Massachusetts
I don't call the gas company, I call the fire department. They tend to take paper trails a lot more seriously.
devb··on Teens who refuse to use social media
It's silly, but I do carry around a notepad so I can make a list of things to look up later.
devb··on What causes the sound of a dripping tap and how do you stop it?
Just in case you didn't read the article, it makes no mention of the researchers' maintenance ability.

"According to the researchers, while the study was purely curiosity-driven, the results could be used to develop more efficient ways to measure rainfall or to develop a convincing synthesised sound for water droplets in gaming or movies, which has not yet been achieved."

devb··on Canon has sold its last film camera
It's actually a little less involved than B&W. You don't have to look up developer/film times and there are no agitation timing techniques to worry about, because the process is exactly the same for every roll. The only annoying part is getting the chemicals up to 100 degrees rather than getting room temperature water straight from the tap.
devb··on Canon has sold its last film camera
Cosina was the company licensed to make the Nikon FM10 and produced rangefinders under the Voigtländer name. All of those products were discontinued last year, sadly.

As far as I know, the F6 is the last one still in production.

devb··on How NYC’s subway got wireless in the tunnels
Should a person not be impressed by being able to travel through two miles of incredible urban density in just a few minutes?

I think vehicular traffic is far and away the most depressing aspect of NYC. All of the noise, pollution, bad attitudes, and danger to pedestrians and cyclists and it's not even close to being a timely and efficient way to get around. The subway is a damn miracle compared to any other current form of surface transportation.

devb··on Deodorants, perfumes, soaps pollute air at levels as high as cars
Another mixture (that I admit I don't understand) is baking soda with hydrogen peroxide. It obliterated a close range direct hit skunk spray on my jeans and sneakers with a 20 minute soak.
devb··on 'Space graffiti': astronomers angry over launch of fake star into sky
I think it's an interesting project. That's enough for me to consider it useful, or at least not worthless.
devb··on Inside One of America’s Last Pencil Factories
They used to be made in the same city as the factory in the article.
devb··on Google Maps Gets a New Look
Good simulation, I guess...
devb··on Iceland's attempts to replant its forests
In NJ there's a restriction from hunting within 450 feet of a building. In Idaho that's probably laughable, but here it leaves a lot of space where you can't discharge any weapons.

There's a parallel with the charge that the "Drug Free School Zone" laws discriminate against minority communities because everywhere you go in cities, you're within 1000 feet of a school.

devb··on Iceland's attempts to replant its forests
I was just reading about Swedish prehistory and there was mention of a drastic climate cooling period.
devb··on Iceland's attempts to replant its forests
It's not a simple solution, because it's not very effective. In areas with limited open space, hunting is very much an exclusionary activity. In Staten Island, the NYC Parks Department is performing an experiment in deer sterilization: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/22/nyregion/deer-vasectomies...
devb··on On the devastating effects of a year in space
It worked on me, I'm looking forward to buying the book. Is this the first time you've come across an excerpt teaser on the internet?
devb··on Snowflake macro photography (2013)
I used to use a 200mm lens with a reversed 50mm on a Nikon D70, and the focus is difficult. It sounds like the photographer here is using a sort of "spray and pray" technique and using focus-stacking software later.

You actually don't need the telephoto, though. You can get a reversing ring that mounts a prime lens directly to the camera. I took this using a 50mm lens on a full frame body, no focus stacking: https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/498/19387253482_cfdb183b3a_c.j...

If you use a shorter focal length lens, you'll get a higher magnification. I've used a 28mm in the past but wasn't very happy with the image quality.

devb··on Deadly Mexico earthquake had unusual cause
Same with the 2011 Virginia earthquake!

devb··on A method for improving Milky Way exposures in light pollution
I'd rather see a comparison between two 30-second exposures at 1600 and 6400 than what was presented here. That would give a much better idea of how much detail you're losing from sensor gain.
devb··on My Father’s Weakness for Beer Never Lessened His Strengths
Can I ask how old you are? Non-judgmental, I totally identify with you.
