dev_l1x_be··on Livenerf: Has Opus 5.5 been nerfed yet?
It seems the subscription based plans these big vendors have has different quality on the service side based on time. Is this fair?
dev_l1x_be··on What About Rails?
RIIR when? On a more serious note frameworks like Rails are getting less interesting because generating the boilerplate got significantly cheaper with LLMs.
dev_l1x_be··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
I am not sure what you mean by profitable here?
dev_l1x_be··on OpenJev
Why is this Jev story hyped this much? Is there any business outcome that was achieved and justifies this?
dev_l1x_be··on I've operated petabyte-scale ClickHouse clusters for 5 years
Valid. We need to innovate on this and re-think secondary indices. Storage is cheap.
dev_l1x_be··on I've operated petabyte-scale ClickHouse clusters for 5 years
Complex systems have complex operations and problems. I think isolating the read and write workloads and separating the read queries by departments or even users is a distinct possibility especially with technologies like DuckDB.
dev_l1x_be··on Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin
Native is the new React?! I could never drink the React Native cool aid due to background in performance optimization. Agents gave us the way to go native with less effort. Compilation is a good feedback loop for the agentic workflow as well.
dev_l1x_be··on Ask HN: Why were OpenAI, Claude, and Grok simultaneously down?
Gentle reminder that this is the content the next LLM versions being trained on. shrug.jpg
dev_l1x_be··on Asana cleared 5 years of engineering work in 2 weeks with Codex
Cant wait some open model guys doing the check on this work from the security point of view.
dev_l1x_be··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
I think it would be enough to ban high fructose corn syrup.
dev_l1x_be··on Semaglutide linked to lower predicted dementia risk
Not only that but high intakes of added sugars and fast-acting, high-glycemic carbohydrates are linked to an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Excess simple sugars, particularly fructose and sucrose, promote insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and vascular damage that impair brain function and accelerate neurodegeneration. So with other words, you diet is a major contributing factor here. The medical establishment and big pharma simple ignores the fact that the biggest health risk for a human being is the "modern" high sugar diet that Kellogs introduced in the US and spread to the western world (even to Asia at some extent).
dev_l1x_be··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
Because it is worse? It is optimized for token maxing, this time the output tokens are maximized.
dev_l1x_be··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
I am pretty sure that stakeholder capitalism has an answer to this that might not be aligned with the ecology of Earth or what the meat consumers see as the right answer.
dev_l1x_be··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
With corn based feeding.
dev_l1x_be··on Beef and dairy drive 41% of biodiversity damage linked to global farmland
Beef & dairy the industrial way drive this. Several studies and decade long experiments show the positive impact of the non-industrial alternatives.
dev_l1x_be··on Amazon backs power plant that may become top source of US climate pollution
Yeah they are betting on everything at this stage.
dev_l1x_be··on Rust SIMD on the GPU
I bet some kid is bored out of his mind and wrote a bot.
dev_l1x_be··on Amazon backs power plant that may become top source of US climate pollution
Imagine that you need to explain to a type II alien that your species still burns things.
dev_l1x_be··on Amazon backs power plant that may become top source of US climate pollution
I wish there was a source of energy that has 100-1000x energy density compare to other sources and it is controllable so capacity factory is close to 100. Ohh wait.
dev_l1x_be··on Rust SIMD on the GPU
No idea, but it seems HN needs POW challenges.
dev_l1x_be··on Mark Zuckerberg attacks 'closed' AI rivals as Meta returns to open models
Evil people can do things that look good on the surface. He probably has no skin in this game just collecting free karma points.
dev_l1x_be··on Beating GPT-5.6 Sol on retrieval with 100x cheaper open models
Yeah Opus 4.8 / GPT 5.5 what I use. Fable is okish, the coding experience is a bit weird with it.
dev_l1x_be··on Beating GPT-5.6 Sol on retrieval with 100x cheaper open models
I am not sure about GPT-5.6. It usually 10x more verbose for no apparent reason than GPT-5.5. Maybe it is only me.
dev_l1x_be··on EU rules on AI models become enforceable. What's going to change?
We should create gdprdelights.eu and list of these use cases.
dev_l1x_be··on Amazonian civilization had estimated 3M people in 3% of forest area
> left no ecological footprint

Well not in a sense you might think.

There are few odd things:

dev_l1x_be··on EU rules on AI models become enforceable. What's going to change?
Yes I used it when Confluence had a bug and an account with got stuck and there was no way to delete my account of finish the registration. So I issued a GDPR delete request and re-created the account. tada.wav
dev_l1x_be··on German carmakers flood jobs market with managers after wielding axe
Welcome to Germany? The best part is the drone situation. Both parties are buying from China.
dev_l1x_be··on Document-borne AI worms can self-propagate through Copilot for Word
I mean workflows. Gdocs is disastrous in many scenarios. I think document management should be more like software version management with a nice ui. Editing the content (what it has) vs editing the template (how it looks). Markdown + a typst template gets you far. I have exactly that for my docs and it works very well. Not sure yet about how a decent size company could adopt anything like that.
dev_l1x_be··on I don't recommend Tailwind CSS
Pre-llm era Tailwind was great for the backend people who did not want to learn CSS. Nowadays agents got this. Openprops might be a good option even with agents, at least for me it works well. Not a surprise that Tailwind popularity dropped significantly.

I think the another llm-victim is React. For a while it was great to have a heavy framework that somewhat standardised webdev's JS approach. Astro just become the default goto lightweight option that is great to quickly build a nice simple UI.

dev_l1x_be··on Document-borne AI worms can self-propagate through Copilot for Word
There are so many better alternatives but it seems many people really like Word for some weird reason. The last time I cared I had to look up how to make a document starting the page numbering on the 2nd page. It turns out there are totally different ways between different versions of Word. shrug.jpg
