dev1ycan··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
Since the start the whole program was simply a scam, that is all there is to it, everyone involved knew it was a scam.

I can guarantee you that China will bring back samples before the US, simply because their program was built to bring back results, practically, while NASA's was meant to subsidize PHDs of people involved, while baiting people with "aliens!!!!1", there is no reason why the state should be funding the PHDs of people involved with niche/weird research rather than focus on what the vast majority want and support NASA for.

You can have obscure research as a side mission, not the core, while blatantly lying too.

dev1ycan··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
Because it was, it completely defaced all copyright and similar laws, like there is ZERO ground to stand against China now regarding theft... it's so weird how this is being allowed.
dev1ycan··on Claude is only available to people over 18 years
The real reason they're doing this is because most minors can't pay lmao
dev1ycan··on iPhone Duo
This looks absolutely horrendous especially horrendous to hold, yeah, no thanks.
dev1ycan··on Chrome again exempts Google from user site data settings
Absolute piece of garbage browser, just use firefox and or ladybird once it comes out
dev1ycan··on GPT-6 Astra on robot arms
It's still shit but I wonder, what is really the thing anyone is trying to accomplish here?

Genuinely.

It's trying to rob people of opportunity to ever migrate and or seek a better life? not just between countries which will very obviously be restricted if actual AGI is ever achieved. Why would you ever give the chance for anyone to come to your country if you do not need their skillset? It would also prevent rural people/town people from going to the big cities.

The obvious end goal is to create a bunch of different "permanent" classes or at least they hope so, I think however you can expect a ton of violence to come from this and people will wish they never invested the resources into this, something beyond what the french revolution ever was, I'm not saying I think it should happen or not, I'm just pointing out the obvious outcome of robbing people of value/worth/dreams in their life.

dev1ycan··on Google avoids a breakup of its ad tech business
They will always "avoid" stuff because there is no real antitrust anymore just the illusion of it, it stopped with Reagan.
dev1ycan··on The ChatGPT/Codex app bundles a full copy of LibreOffice
They will never do this
dev1ycan··on Hang on to Your Firefox
If I was dealing with the same type of "person" that's only "contribution" to every github repo is to just go and ask for language policing I would intentionally be as prickly as possibly to them while telling them no.
dev1ycan··on Hang on to Your Firefox
The only real threat to firefox is ladybird, that's it, Brave and other chromium browsers are not it.
dev1ycan··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link

"human speaks at... tokens"

Yeah, stopped reading there, this is obviously some deranged sam altman paid blog post, I can't wait for the bubble to pop just so his newly launched chip falls flat on his face.

dev1ycan··on To become a better writer, read as much as you can
Yeah, I don't think anyone is missing anything from someone who doesn't know/like how to read, sorry.

There's other mediums to express ideas that isn't books if you are functionally illiterate.

dev1ycan··on Copyright does not protect AI-generated content in EU
Why would copyright and patents exist when the US blatantly stole the entire world's knowledge to train their AI models (and China distillled from it)
dev1ycan··on Meta's blockbuster trial draws parallels to big tobacco
Hopefully META loses so they can stop this forceful age verification at OS level garbage being financed by META, f..k META.
dev1ycan··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
This is what made me avoid chrome since release, I tried to right click a youtube channel background as a teen wanting to use it as a template to make my own channel background on photoshop... turns out they had disabled it, while I could on firefox.
dev1ycan··on Anthropic's 'watermark' text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
While I like that LLMs won't be able to produce the entire internet anymore, I am worried that the real reason for this move is for Anthropic to claim everything is theirs even though they STOLE humanity's collective knowledge including billions in private property worth of knowledge (or maybe even trillions), and all they do is regurgitate it, but now with a watermark on top as if it was theirs.
dev1ycan··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
Lima, Peru... daytime and night time temps are +8-+3 (single day, might be the coldest of the year) degrees celcius, usually should be like 18-16 celcius daytime, it's at 26-21 (single day, might be the coldest of the year) with +6-+8 being the most common... already past mid winter and there hasn't been a single "cold" day yet.

Pelicans are mass starving so are sea lions as cold based fish have left the shores, no long sleeves or sheets needed to sleep, it's been summer prety much all year... never seen this in 31 years of life... supposedly 98 was bad although this one is projected to be worse... summer temps might hit 39-34 celcius on average if things keep going this way when normally you have 31-27 degrees during summer, considering most houses don't have air conditioning I can definitely see a lot of heat related deaths happening and a potential food crisis forming.

dev1ycan··on Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake – 68 km NNW of Ende, Indonesia
It's more likely related to planetary positions and or solar cycle/activity, "recent studies suggest a notable statistical correlation between specific solar magnetic milestones and the shifting phases of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation"

Like in theory it doesn't make sense that el niño causes earthquakes, yet there seems to be more prominent ones during el niño however if both are related to sun cycle/activity it would make more sense (seeing how the moon affects earth as well)

dev1ycan··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
It always seemed insane to me that people accepted so easily to have everything locked behind "app stores", crazy garbage, even worse having SO MUCH PREINSTALLED BLOATWARE OUT OF THE BOX.
dev1ycan··on Stolen Buttons
Yeah, let's take the remaining fun out of the web, everything needs to be gray and plain.
dev1ycan··on AI Companies Are Trying to Hide a Staggering Amount of Debt
How about we regulate private corporations so they can't take a "gamble" that's equivalent to a private company giving everyone ferraris on the idea that they will eventually all become formula 1 drivers and give back 10x the ferrari's cost?

Even better, that "gamble" will have to be rescued by taxpayer money.

dev1ycan··on OpenAI says its AI went rogue and launched 'unprecedented' cyber-attack
Every time, this is getting old
dev1ycan··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
The quick state in which we're devolving into a dystopia will eventually be studied a hundred years from now...
dev1ycan··on Woman in Brazil enslaved for 55 years by 3 generations of the same family
If I had a guess, the family got rid off her the easy way when she was old, they saved themselves a lot of money.
dev1ycan··on The bottleneck might be the air in the room
Submarineers also are hand picked due to their great lung capacity...
dev1ycan··on Flock cameras track more than your license plate, and they're spreading fast
If a certain group of people think that it should be their right to take others rights away and turn society into a dystopia for perceived security, then for the same reason it should be other individuals rights to assert that their rights should be protected by taking the first group's rights away to install or do whatever they think they can do for convenience/security's sake.

This includes "ancestry tests", security cameras with AI in them, upload IDs to "verify", and even social media where you are allowed to upload pictures with others in them.

And since we "supposedly" live in a democracy, we should be allowed to have a vote to decide on this, the group that wins is the majority, right? I don't understand why we're allowing our rights to erode before we have an informed election about this, in democracies.

dev1ycan··on We all depend on open source. We will defend it together
It's time to ban every big player from contributing, it's clearly they're all malicious, this is just a way to force in AI code into open source.
dev1ycan··on An entire Herculaneum scroll has been read for the first time
This is so beautiful in a way, like going back in time and saving someone from dying, their words are now back into history.

In a way this is sort of like the reverse of a recently aired anime (Orb: on the movements of the Earth) which talk about the opposite, people whose contributions were erased and we'll never know about them.
