desigooner··on Building a Web Application that makes $500 a Month – Part I
if you don't mind me asking, what package are you using on prgmr.com and the level of traffic it handles.

I've been looking at some VPS options and I wanted to make sure I select the right one that is not oversold + performs well.

desigooner··on IPhones and 3G iPads log your location in an unencrypted file on the device
It might not be directly related but there was a news story on CNET [1] yesterday about cops in Michigan using a device from Cellebrite to download information from phones of people they stopped for violations that includes contacts, phone logs, messages, photographs and location history.

Does Apple's decision of having such information stored on the phone unencrypted make it easy for such devices? The device claims to subvert phone passwords though.

desigooner··on Peter Thiel: We’re in a Higher Education Bubble
Sort of OT but I remember getting letters from AAUP when they were involved in negotiations for certain benefits for Lecturers, Part time Lecturers (TAs were considered to be part time lecturers because of some statute IIRC) when I TAed at Rutgers..
desigooner··on The Megabus Effect
IIRC correctly, Greyhound has/had passes for a certain duration that allowed you to travel any place, any number of times within that time period.
desigooner··on The Megabus Effect
FWIW, in the multiple times I've taken these buses between Boston <-> NYC, the wi-fi on Bolt Bus seems a lot more reliable than Megabus.
desigooner··on Are grains making us fat? If so, we should be much thinner than 1914.
I haven't read anything recent from Taubes but is he still peddling the Atkins diet or has he moved on to the Paleo diet?! I find it irritating that Taubes ends up cherry picking data to support his hypothesis.

But then I subscribe to the Lyle McDonald-Mark Rippetoe line of thought when it comes to nutrition-fitness ideology.

.

Edit:If it interests anyone, here's a transcript from a Larry King Live episode hosted by Joy Behar with Gary Taubes on to talk about his book and Dr. Mehmet Oz + Gillian Michaels and Dr. Andrew Weil (an "integrative" medicine evangelist)

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0710/19/lkl.01.html

My main problem with Taubes is that he dismisses exercise and portion control/moderation in favor of his Atkinsian approach

desigooner··on SICP in ePub format on Github
Calibre's nice but it always messes up the formatting / paragraphing even for text-only files
desigooner··on Poll: Do you know C?
Used to know C + Assembly pretty well back in school (thesis + projects on microcontrollers and such) ... All I can do now is read some code ..
desigooner··on Collect HN: Aprils Fools

desigooner··on CEO Friday: Why we don’t hire .NET programmers
Just because he managed to attain the title of CEO, doesn't mean all he speaks would be gospel. Having a closed mindset is, more often than not, detrimental to one's ventures.
desigooner··on Did the Microsoft Stack Kill MySpace?
When I interned at SBC/Yahoo DSL around 'mid 2000s, they used the LAMPerl stack quite extensively.
desigooner··on Did the Microsoft Stack Kill MySpace?
In my opinion, some of it also had to do with inconsistent and ugly hacky Myspace user experience.

White / Yellow / Green / Red fonts on black backgrounds with animated gifs + glitter and broken plugins will be the response to the question "What comes to your mind when you think of Myspace UI experience?"

In comparison, the facebook experience was a lot more fresh, clean and unified.

desigooner··on Sequoia gives photo-sharing startup more money than they gave Google
I feel the same. Unfortunately, after spending a few minutes with such an app and not having a positive impression, it's pretty rare that I would revisit the app again later in the future. Most of the people I know behave the same way: if it catches their attention, it stays on the phone or else the app's gone.

The best launch scenario for them would have been SXSW .. instead, all the group messaging apps got the limelight and these guys seem to have missed that boat ..

Also, what's the privacy aspect of this app?! I could think of a few concerns.. e.g. someone's photos popping up when the user doesn't intend to be seen at a particular place ..

desigooner··on Indians cry out for Apple's attention
if you took a casual survey of people owning apple products in India, in all probability you'd find that a bulk of those people would say that they procured the product via USA, UK, Singapore, Dubai or Australia and the likes vs. officially buying it from an Apple partner in India.
desigooner··on Indians cry out for Apple's attention
Having seen a fair share of Fox News and Indian media alike, they're on the same platform. Sensationalism exists in Indian media but none of them push an agenda as much as Fox news does.

On the other hand, you could compare CNN here and Indian news channels for the kludges and for relying on "public opinion and insights" rather than partaking in investigative journalism.

desigooner··on Amazon’s Android App Store Launches: Test Drive Apps Directly From Your Browser
There's a dropdown category called "Amazon App Store" for US users next to the search bar on amazon.com
desigooner··on Dress.me: Because Guys Hate to Shop
Thanks for the link. I tried it a couple of times for a couple of different fits and I wish they had more refinement options .. like options to tell what fits to avoid and more than 1 recommendation, stability/pronation et al. for running shoes, etc.

Also sucks that for all my fits, it always showed an Asics product, a brand which I personally don't like as their fits / soles are the worst for me.

desigooner··on Is This The Girl That Hacked HBGary?
IRL, it's thought by many that AQ stopped using electronic communication to relay important messages and only rely on inperson communication / messengers.
desigooner··on Quora engineers accused of vandalizing a clone’s website
Same here. But for developers who've worked at organizations like Mozilla in the past, you'd think they'd be better at handling this the way it should be rather than going script kiddy and juvenile on their own site.
desigooner··on As AT&T Introduces Caps, BT Removes Them; Says Investing In Network Is Smarter
I wish that was an option for quite a few people. Verizon doesn't really cover a lot of places and they don't plan to expand their services in the near future

e.g. here in Boston, they provide services in the suburbs but not in the city {i tried getting their service at 2 apartments but got the same answer both times that they don't service the area and the only available product was their DSL service}.

desigooner··on Another Explosion at Fukushima Nuclear Plant

0240: The governor of Tokyo orders radioactivity levels in the city to be measured - Kyodo.

0232: Update on the explosion(s) at Reactor 3: "We believe it was a hydrogen explosion. It is not immediately known if it affected the reactor" - nuclear safety agency spokesman Ryo Miyake.

desigooner··on Video of reactor 1 at Fukushima plant
BBC environment correspondent Roger Harrabin says local officials believe the release of radiation following the nuclear plant explosion is likely to be small. He adds that nuclear incidents aren't always as serious as they may sound or appear, and actually, in terms of loss of life and destruction, accidents at hydroelectric plants are far more dangerous.
desigooner··on HBGary planned to "blow the balls off Nmap"
Is this a case of greed and a road to fast fame?!

This coming out from someone as respected (at least in the past) and renowned researcher like Hoglund doesn't give a ringing endorsement to the industry. Was he that desperate for fame and fortune?!

desigooner··on Dear Apple, Please Copy This Notification System For The iPhone Immediately
I'm really waiting for the WebOS Tablets. The launch looked promising and the product looked well designed. What tips it for me in favor of Web OS vs. Android is the better execution of UI and support for DRM aps like Netflix.
desigooner··on Everything You Know About Fitness is a Lie
That's precisely why the "nature intended us to" argument doesn't really work for me when I hear people trying to convince me to try the Paleo diet. Whatever the benefits might be (besides making the author of those books a good chunk of money), they can be garnered by other means. What I hate even more is when a few devotees of such diets go on a slant about vegetarianism/veganism etc. etc.
desigooner··on Piracy is Theft? Ridiculous. Lost Sales? They Don’t Exist
FWIW, I saw both the original fan sub and the newer official release (japanese with subs) and I definitely preferred the fan subs. They explain some nitty gritties and colloquialisms rather nicely, things that are certainly ignored by official releases.
desigooner··on Joyent: 54+ hours of downtime
Is there any time that Mr. Hoffman's going to call it quits on this thread and actually take it offline in an attempt to resolve the OP's issues?!

Frankly, the tone of most of his comments have been borderline denigrating and it's doing nothing but adding nuisance value to the thread.

desigooner··on 3 Of The Best Free Pomodoro Productivity Apps

desigooner··on Born This Way
He claims that this article is relevant as Lady Gaga is a startup and so is Apple (i kid you not)....
desigooner··on Nokia Plan B fails after only 36 hours
I understand that, I'd probably have stayed anonymous as well but it seemed like it was a hasty decision as staying anonymous sort of took out the credibility since nobody knew how much stake or influence they really had in the organization. FWIW it seemed like a few software developers who were working on Symbian if I had to guess, pledging their stock options and not really anybody from management.
