desigooner··on Ask PG: Is this what you meant by "web-based Excel/database hybrid"?
It's still very much alive. IIRC, a lot of universities / K-12 schools and non profits use FileMaker in some manner. I've supported a high number of users in the past and non-technical people surprisingly adapted well managing to be productive with it. The iPhone + iPad apps were decently usable upon launch and hopefully they've gotten better over the last couple of years. I prefer FM over Access and even Excel as far as small tasks like data matching / cleanup / etc. are concerned where a development effort isn't warranted.
desigooner··on How to Make Yourself Work When You Just Don’t Want To
Shameless plug for a site I created once: http://tomato-timer.com
desigooner··on Show HN: Fresh baked bread, delivered to your door via SMS
Looks like an interesting service. I'll have to wait until you guys make it to Boston.

On a side note: The picture at the bottom.. isn't it from Scribe Winery? The tasting there was a great experience.

desigooner··on Poll: Do you actually use the product you are working on?
I created http://tomato-timer.com when I was trying to see what the Pomodoro technique was all about and if it'd help me writing / coding. I haven't used it in a while personally but it still gets some organic traffic.
desigooner··on Vegetarian/Vegan food finder for London
That might be true for people who hail from certain coastal communities (like Bengal, Orissa, etc.) but more often than not, "Vegetarian" means No eggs, No Fish, No meat.
desigooner··on Adi Shamir Prevented from Attending Crypto and Cryptology Conferences
It occurs more often than people realise.

My friend was in the US before he had to go out and get his H1B extended. He was stuck outside the country for about 5 months for "additional scrutiny". He got his undergrad, masters and Ph.D. in the US and worked in the area of chemical engineering + spent working 6 months in middle east on water filtration projects.

Not as much as you think it does; especially in cities such as Bombay and Bangalore.

I've heard many of TJs supplements are white labelled Nature's way products
desigooner··on Prismic.io: a developer-focused approach to content management
FWIW, the fonts on the example site don't render correctly on Chrome 29 on Windows 7 and look like crap.

When will people start testing fonts on windows and not just go with whatever looks good on a mac?!

desigooner··on Rackspace Launches Developer Discount
Is this Discount available for a limited time only or on all future signups?

I'm about to finish a project and travel for a couple of weeks so I don't anticipate myself using it anytime within the next month. As a result, if this discount is not expiring, I'd prefer delaying the signup by a month =)

desigooner··on Caffeine Spray, Brought to You by Peter Thiel’s College Dropout Challenge
For me, it's really easy to dismiss the product as snakeoil when I hear something like Homeopathic energy being used to promote the product.
desigooner··on Wearable Fitness Devices Let Others Monitor Your Sex Life
True. They do use other sensors to gauge the skin temperature and such. Coupling the data from that plus the accelerometer, you would at least be able to improve upon the metrics calculated. From my understanding, it's not so much of the "seeing" of the pulse being the issue as the algorithms they use to cut off the data collection, identifying it as "noise". As a result, there is errant or missing data collection during rest periods (when optical oximetry wouldn't suffer due to the movement). If there's a sustained movement, using data such as skin temp and accelerometer makes it easier to identify what's noise and what not. Their calorie tracking really suffers due to the errant tracking of heart rate and the intense activity periods; comparing my off-days with workout days, the difference in calories burnt is a meagre 100-150 calories. A moderately brisk walk alone burns about 200 calories an hour.

I suppose I was expecting some basic learning algorithms that adjust the data collection according to your day to day activities; but then this is the first iteration of the product, so there's hope. At this point of time, for me, it is just a sleep tracker + pedometer + a basic overview of the day.

desigooner··on Wearable Fitness Devices Let Others Monitor Your Sex Life
I have a Basis B1 band that I've been using on and off since launch. The one thing it is really poor at is capturing heart rate information and other metrics during periods of heavy activity. If you are working out or performing an intense activity, the device frequently dismisses the activity as noise for one and stops capturing the data. e.g. when my heart's pounding after a heavy lift or a sprint and is ready to pop out, the Basis band either stops recording or shows my heart rate that's no where close to true. I've exchanged emails with them in the past about their algorithms dismissing such activity as noise but they've maintained that they cannot discuss the algorithms they use to calculate the metrics and it's not a device to be used for such purposes; it's more about giving you a rough estimate as you carry on your day to day life.

As far as sudden heart rate increases during the night, you could possibly co-relate it to your dreaming; I woke up sweaty once after having a nightmare and my skin temperature & heart rate #s were definitely skewed by a good margin as compared to a normal night of sleep.

desigooner··on Here’s Why Firefox is Still Years Behind Google Chrome
Kind of OT: With the latest Chrome update on Mac OS X, the tabs just freeze if I try to load a JS heavy site like Facebook, Youtube, etc. and as a result, I have to just close the tab. Any pointers on remedying this?

I started using Firefox again and everything works except for some reason, I cannot login to Twitter. After entering the details, and clicking the Login button, I'm redirected back to the login page. I can view tweets just fine (without being logged in).

desigooner··on Parse explains their Cloudstack
It'd be nice if they had something about how their infrastructure is setup and the rationale behind the decisions they made in selecting certain services over others.

At this point, it's just some filler text about what the company is and the "services" they use; There's not much to learn here except find one or two new services which might have been shown off on HN at some point of time or the other.

Right now, It's almost like a list of items on Referly; only that these items are web services.

desigooner··on New software could have ID’d Boston bomber
Except the Rank-1 hit wasn't against an image from the mugshot database.

..The notable rank-one hit for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is an illustrative example of this potential. However, the hit was against a graduation photograph with similar pose that was tweeted after he had been publically identified, and not a conventional mugshot from a prior arrest.

desigooner··on BBM for iOS and Android to Launch This Summer
This might be a little too late (more like a year or 2) with the multitude of IM apps out there like Whatsapp, Line, Viber in addition to iMessage, Facebook Messenger & Google's rumored new app, Babel.

Pretty much everyone I know uses WhatsApp (which has replaced a few google groups/yahoo groups for me) and Facebook messenger.

desigooner··on Boston Police use fake social media accounts to phish indie rock show info
I went to Rutgers & it was day and night in 2004-2005 & 2006 onwards as far as house shows were concerned in NB. Unfortunately, NBPD has been known to use a heavy hand in a lot of things. Not too long ago, the Prosecutor's office was investigating an Internal affairs guy for mishandling 81 cases.

On a side note, NYPD had an elaborate, illegal surveillance operation spying on Muslims in the NJ area that was outed when a building super inadvertently walked into the apartment being used as their base.

These days, there's a good chance that a hospital being more profitable than a casino. Many of the casinos are having serious money issues (Revel in AC being the most recent case) and quite a few hospital groups are minting money.
desigooner··on Log In or Create Account
What if the email account has been compromised? Right now, having unique passwords for each account allows me to compartmentalize access to my accounts. In this case, the attackers would have one less thing to worry about.

Also, is this behavior carried over to the mobile apps?

edit: Nevermind. I was not thinking right. Password resets, as pointed out by many, are always possible with email access.

Try mixing some Sriracha in Mayonaise and slather it on a sandwich or have it with fries. Great combo IMO
desigooner··on How H-1B Visas Are Screwing Tech Workers
Another piece of recycled fear-mongering garbage.

From all the people I know around here who're on an H1B, the salaries are quite on par with US nationals. I do admit that I don't know anyone working for the companies named in the article (TCS, Infosys).

The issue that needs more discussion is why not let US-educated non-immigrants have an easier path to Permanent Residency vs. letting them leave the country to start companies back in their homeland.

desigooner··on It’s here. Introducing Readmill for iPhone
The page should at least mention that Readmill is an e-book reader for the iPhone. It is not evident upfront from the blog post and the screenshots are not as clear. It almost seems like Readmill could be a read-it-later app like Pocket or Instapaper.
desigooner··on Show HN: The List
Is it just me or have people stopped testing how the font renders on anything other than a Mac? Don't people believe in cross-platform readability anymore?

The font being used looks terrible on a Windows machine (Win 7 with Chrome at 100% zoom).

desigooner··on Why I’m Leaving Ubuntu for Debian
I have an old Dell lying around that i use as a linux machine and I recently moved from Ubuntu to Crunchbang (#!). So far, I'm digging the minimalism and the zippiness.
desigooner··on [dead]
It's not even well-accepted amongst the likes of styleforum users who are all across the sartorial spectrum. I remember reading a comment once that went more or less like "Use a green tie and it looks like an artichoke".

A windsor / double-windsor / pratt / four-in-hand are perfectly acceptable tie-knots, depending on the tie.
