deruta··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
When you're multilingual, you'd switch between languages on the fly, mid-sentence even, just because the words in other language come to your mind quicker, seem to better match nuances, etc.

> Becoming aware of typography practices will drive you insane.

And try to use the em-dash properly these days!

It's decent. Treatment of franchisees, on the other hand...
deruta··on Why so many control rooms were seafoam green (2025)
And alliteration for extra cool.
deruta··on Desperately Seeking Squircles (2018)
As I see it, the name fits perfectly. If the superellipse is a square at n -> inf and a circle at n = 2, then in-between... welp, a squircle.
deruta··on Calculator Forensics (2002)
I was with you until I remembered the default unit for angles in calculators is degrees, not radians.

I'm honestly out of the loop, what are they doing?

I've, in turn, heard much praise for how Estonia is doing it.

Scunthorpe problem seems to be showing in the latter case.
deruta··on Congratulations on creating the one billionth repository on GitHub
I was involved in the 99,999th and the 100,000th one in my FQA days.

We were being onboarded, they were just for demo and were promptly deleted. No one cared about the Cool Numbers.

Don't they any way?
deruta··on Where do those undergraduate divisibility problems come from?
And a proof by "counting something":

1 + 2 + ... + n = n(n+1)/2

2 divides n(n+1), n(n+1) = 2m

7 * n^3 + n =

2*(3*n^3 + n) + n^3 - n =

2*(3*n^3 + n) + n(n+1)(n-1) =

2*(3*n^3 + n + m(n-1))

I'm trying to have fun continuing this with the reals, and I'm feeling dizzy.

Congrats on finding time! Maybe this will push me to get back to my nib stash, ha.

Got any experience with adapting fountain pen inks for calligraphy?

deruta··on Sorry, wrong number
The East/West names for the branches mean "eastern branch/western branch", they both still are pretty much N/S-bound
deruta··on Emoji History: The Missing Years
I concur. Consider TFA. The symbols are not converted to from ASCII smileys and are used like an extension of the charset. Conversely, I remember web chatrooms in the mid-00s, where a colon-paren would always be converted to the service's pallette's rendition of an emoticon, pretty color and 3D to beat.

Plus, there's a question of how people use them, but that distinction I think came later

deruta··on Emoji History: The Missing Years
Isn't it?! There's plenty of talking about how "we're regressing to hieroglyphs", but that doesn't capture the nuance in usage of emojis in different languages.

Your example expands well to old-school emoticons. Where I live, an "xD" serves as a laugh and is used in rather general way. Meanwhile in the Anglosphere it's stereotypically associated with specific demographics

deruta··on TheDesk desktop environment
Multiple desktop shell sessions per user. Oh yeah, that would rock
deruta··on Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences
Per a nitty exploitable quote, do you have the slightest idea how little that narrows it down?

You can generalize addition to semigroups but that's not a point, eh?

deruta··on Apple TV+ Cornered the Market on "Prestige Dad TV"
Too(?) much of the same. I've seen enough of the word "masculine" as if it was an insult and conversely speaking of femininity like a virtue per se that I can't resist a double take when I see such a piece.

I'm assuming good faith. One's day is better that way.

Btw, I cannot recommend enough the other work by Marcin Wichary. For me, he's the paragon of making the most of what you can do in terms of, to put it best, tailoring things exactly to your specific needs and tastes. (My copy of Shift Happens is on its way, can't wait!)

deruta··on Email addresses are not good 'permanent' identifiers for accounts

deruta··on Guide to Finding Lemmy Communities (Subreddits)
How is a fee for a certification "a nice barrier to entry"? I get an argument about funding the body in question, but the barrier thing?
deruta··on Redactle – a daily game of un-redacting Wikipedia articles
Have been playing this for a week or two now, landing a few perfect scores, and it turns out that the guesses that will get you far are words like "defined", "known" etc., and some words you'd expect to be unredacted from the get go, like "can", "be", "they". Another thing is structure of the articles, mostly parentheses. Two-character words? Date and place of birth (and maybe death). Colon after first word? The name of another language (mostly). Try "named" and you might have another hint about the etymology. Look for subscripts (superscripts are out with the rest of TeX)

...given, there was a bad day to not know the word "injunction", so there's that.
