derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Simple Link Sharing Website
> When you have a couple of friends with a similar need, blnk instantly provides value, no network effect needed.

So you still need a network to have value, only that you don't need a large network? You mentioned newsletter and RSS, which you don't have, so people have to visit your site to get the links. So compare to newsletter and RSS, your site has less value on the same scale of network, right?

When all the onlookers are gone, there will be only yourself on your site. Do you still want to post links there, when no one else is looking?

derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Simple Link Sharing Website
I tried, and see that it does what it claims to do. For this kind of alternative social networks you need to answer this question first:

If there is no network effect, which you don't have and will not have in the foreseeable future, what value do you provide?

derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Jiter – Just in Time Webhooks
Nice. A few questions:

* Is the future webhook calling cancel-able?

* If I send multiple event with the same payload and same triggering time, will jiter coalesce them into one webhook calling?

* if my service is temporarily offline, will jiter retry the webhook?

derekzhouzhen··on Holonforth
I am not sure which environment you referred to; I've used squeak smalltalk, and not impressed. I actually like smalltalk so I ended up using GNU smalltalk which doesn't rely on a code browser.
derekzhouzhen··on Holonforth
You lose the ability to use a 3rd party editor, traditional source control, grep and various other small command line tools. Also god forbid if the database is corrupted during a crash or sudden power loss.
derekzhouzhen··on JMAP: It’s Like IMAP but Not Really (2019)
There are 3 different kinds of email services that only have limited interoperability:

* Corporate email services, aka Outlook/Exchange

* Surveillance email services, aka Gmail, etc

* Real email services that expose the raw email database, such as Maildir, to the users.

For the first 2 kinds, I'd rather POP and keep my interaction with them to the minimum. For the last kind, IMAP/JMAP is too limiting in capability.

derekzhouzhen··on Ask HN: Do you browse the web with JavaScript disabled?
It is hopeless to disable javascript. However, I want to have a middle ground: Disable the ability of javascript to make network calls. From privacy's perspective, it should be as good as javascript disabled. With local only javascript, the bit of interactivity that we took for granted can still be achieved.
derekzhouzhen··on After self-hosting my email for twenty-three years I have thrown in the towel
I am still doing it, on a cheap VPS no less. Yes, it is hard, and yes, some large email vendors drop my emails for no reason. However, if everyone throws in the towel, they (the monopolies) won.
derekzhouzhen··on The optimal amount of fraud is non-zero
The benefit to a low level of fraud is that people are still looking out for fraud, so the society is more robust. If there was no fraud, and someone just invent fraud (it will happen), the damage could be devastating.
derekzhouzhen··on Launch HN: Lion Pose (YC W21) – Safe and effective skin care for people of color
I read the original post but not much of the discussion. I was referring to the anecdote story at the beginning of the post. I believe even in the US, bleaching your skin has been an obsolete practice so I am not sure which point the anecdote was supposed to make.

Millions or hundred of millions of people using the phase "people of color" doesn't make it correct, especially in a skincare context. I don't call myself colored (I am Chinese) and my black friends don't call themselves colored, my Indian friends don't call themselves colored. This is a nerd's forum so I tried to be nerdy about it.

derekzhouzhen··on Launch HN: Lion Pose (YC W21) – Safe and effective skin care for people of color
I don't get it, just don't bleach your skin, was it hard to understand?

Also what do you mean by people of color? The skin tone of human being is a continuous spectrum from milky pale to midnight dark and every shade in between. I supposed as skin care professionals you must have a scientific way to quantify that, in stead of just "people of color".

derekzhouzhen··on Former world champion reveals that she was ordered to lose Olympic semi-final
In China, the goal is not to win gold medal for you, but for the country. The other girl has the higher win rate against the opponent at the final, so Ye was ordered to bunt.
derekzhouzhen··on Ask HN: Does your personal page get any interaction?
Some interaction are very useful, such as comments. However, I won't allow 3rd party javascript on my websites. It is a problem for static sites; So I made https://roastidio.us for exactly this situation.

The idea is simple: You merely link to my site, and ask your visitors to leave comments there. Comments will be emailed to you, with user identity redacted and rate limited. You can reply to the constructive comments on my site and ignore the trolls.

derekzhouzhen··on Ask HN: How much info should founders share with early stage employees?
Share all the hard facts: who's who, capital raised, cash flow, competitive landscape, committed roadmap, etc.

You can withhold future plannings to yourself unless you need inputs.

derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: An RSS aggregator with productivity and retention in mind
Can you explain the "playlist" idea a bit more? Is is just an aggregation of several feeds, or is there possibility to do further curation on an item by item basis? Also, is the "playlist" exported in standard RSS so people can subscribe with another RSS reader, or it is proprietary and only usable in Symfoz?
derekzhouzhen··on Email doesn't suck – it's email clients that need improving
That's why you need to write your own email client, or help me to polish mine:

derekzhouzhen··on Ask HN: Is RSS dying? Or coming back?
RSS is still the best to get articles in a sane way. On my website https://roastidio.us I poll 4500+ feeds and counting. I have amassed 300k+ articles that are higher quality than average web pages. Of cause, the whole corpus is searchable.
derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Synology C2 Object Storage – rids of data egress fees
I just migrate from S3 to Backblaze and so far I am happy. I will keep this in mind. The document said:

> The minimum unit of data on C2 Object Storage is 128 KB

How abut files that are 129KB, will it count as 256KB? My application is a picture album, with file size raging from 100KB to a few MB. Would this cause me quite a bit of waste in space?

derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Anysphere, home for important, long-form conversations
Interesting idea. I guess the problem is that it won't scale.
derekzhouzhen··on How to Delete Gmail Attachments Without Deleting the Emails
I have a script to auto-delete all attachments in emails more than one month old. I think it is the only sane way to keep emails around for long-term: There is no point to keep something unsearchable and greatly bloat up your mailbox.
derekzhouzhen··on Objective-S: architecture-oriented language based on Smalltalk and Objective-C
Objective-C has objective because C itself is not objected oriented. Objective-Smalltalk would be redundant. How about StepTalk or SmallStep? to honor the NextStep heritage, you know.
derekzhouzhen··on Nepal's Kusunda language has no words for "yes" or "no"
I mean there are clear rules in both English and Chinese `officially`. However, Chinese is such a lax language and can convey very different meanings with just tone differences, you don't want to take the chance if there is a better way.
derekzhouzhen··on Nepal's Kusunda language has no words for "yes" or "no"
> It is ngh, low rising tone. I'm sure you can verify this online.

There is no official romanization of Cantonese. Both the negative prefix `mh` and 5 are bilabial nasal, not velar nasal. They are of different tones though. Ans also as I pointed out earlier, there are velar nasals in Cantonese. to use your own logic:

> languages are generally not defined by how they are written, but by how they are spoken

So here is my understanding: one nasal that is never used in isolation is not a word.

derekzhouzhen··on Nepal's Kusunda language has no words for "yes" or "no"
There are clear rules in English and Chinese. English is absolute so "yes" means I am. Chinese is an echo language so "是的" means you are correct that I am not.

However, I do see Chinese making mistakes in English and English speakers making mistakes in Chinese and I am not 100% free of the guilt.

In the question "你不是犹太人吧?" there is already a "是“ in it, so a native speaker would use "对“ or "没错“ instead of "是的". They all means "correct" but by avoiding using "是" again, the chance of misunderstanding is minimized.

derekzhouzhen··on Nepal's Kusunda language has no words for "yes" or "no"
Because there is no spacing in Chinese so there can be some ambiguity about word boundary. The more important thing is that you and I both agree that "mh" cannot be used by itself.

In Chinese numbers are also prefixed to measure words or classifier. eg; "How many brothers do you have?" No one will answer "m" but "m'go". So, I don't believe in colloquial Chinese that a pure number is a word. You are welcome to disagree.

By the way, it is "m" for 5 in Cantonese. Unless you were talking about Shanghainese, but then is "n". "ng" is a common starting consonant in Cantonese, like "ngao" (cow) or "ngo" (I). but it doesn't have a standard meaning.

derekzhouzhen··on Nepal's Kusunda language has no words for "yes" or "no"
No, Cantonese is a prime example of "mh" being only a prefix, not a word by itself. It doesn't even have a vowel. There is no way that you answer a question with just "mh". In Mandarin Chinese the corresponding prefix is "bu", so you can sometimes hear broken Chinese from English speakers answering a question with just "bu".
derekzhouzhen··on Nepal's Kusunda language has no words for "yes" or "no"
It is different. "是的" means "That's correct"; So if someone ask me "you don't smoke?" and I answer "是的" that means I don't smoke, which is actually what "no" means in standard English.
derekzhouzhen··on Thoughts on RSS
See my blog's feed as an example on how to use enclosure:

https://blog.3qin.us/feed.xml

W3C has a RSS validator that you can use to validate the RSS file. I also have a blog linter that cross check the consistency between the metadata from the feed and the metadata from the blog posts

https://roastidio.us/lint

Hint: very few blogs pass without warning.

derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Babble – Communicate privately on state-sponsored social media
It is a noble effort, but you still have the same dilemma:

* if only few people is using it, then the messages will be lost

* if somehow this gain popularity, then the authority will ban it

For a small determined group, there are already easier ways to communicate.

derekzhouzhen··on Thoughts on RSS
> Publishers would care more about RSS if they didn't have to sacrifice things they cared about

What sacrifice are you talking about? For instance, Substack supports RSS, even for paid items. They just only include the teaser portion in the feed. The paying customers can click though.
