derekja··on Mushroom Cultivation Automation [video]
my makerspace in victoria, bc runs classes on dna barcoding for fungal identification. About $12 per id when all is done.
derekja··on Maplibre: community-driven Mapbox GL fork
I don’t see any support for alternate projections. For my raster-based dataset (satellite data) of polar regions I don’t see any benefit over my current openlayers approach. Looks great for vector-based 4326/3857 projected data, though! Please let me know if I’ve overlooked projection support?
derekja··on Tips for Interviewing over Zoom
I have a fancy microphone, but when I’m away from home in a low bandwidth situation I often phone in audio to zoom because it lags less. Lagging video and non-lagging audio seems to bother people less than both lagging.
derekja··on Drunk Post: Things I've Learned as a Sr Engineer
if they get to that point I’d say it was worth their time!
derekja··on Show HN: Verilog2factorio
wow, this is pretty cool!
derekja··on GIMP PyDev
openSCAD perhaps?
derekja··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2021)
I'm really enjoying your product! I'm a post-doc mentoring a team of CS students and being able to give them transcripts of our discussions has really helped keep them on track.
derekja··on My Second Brain – Zettelkasten
wow, is that web site ever broken on mobile. Thanks for mentioning, though, I’ve been hunting for something like that.
derekja··on At-home test for colon cancer is as reliable as traditional screening: experts
more likely you carried on a conversation you don’t remember. I came out of a procedure and the doctor came out afterward to talk about the results and mentioned things I had absolutely no memory of telling him!
derekja··on Ask HN: Those who joined PhD after 30 in STEM, how was your experience?
good. Was initially weird to be back in classes at 38 with people half my age. A decade of msft experience set me up really well to plan my own course, though, where some of my classmates basically had their course set by their supervisor. Apply for scholarships, funders love experience!
derekja··on Show HN: Leet Resumes – a free technical resume-writing service
Marc had some great suggestions for me when I was last doing a resume update. I haven't used his new service, but can vouch for his knowing about resumes!
derekja··on Quitting a New Job
Had a manager at Microsoft that made me do that. Thought it was really weird at the time, and certainly wasn't anything like a company policy, but here we are 20 years later. It's a story I tell my reports all the time and it just works so much better to be able to rely on everyone being around because they have decided they want to be.
derekja··on The aftermath of “No, 'Open Source' does not mean 'Includes Free Support'”
I didn't see anything unreasonable in the article. Turning off issues might be easier than ignoring them, but if they are useful for some other reason I don't see the controversy over ignoring them.
derekja··on Facebook Declared War on Apple, and It Just May Signal the End of Facebook
Hehe, while you are usually quite correct in that spelling, in Carmack's case "free reign" may actually be more appropriate since he exercises pretty much sovereign power there!
derekja··on Interview advice that got me offers
Well, actually I'm in a long-term polyamorous relationship and my partner keeps telling me to go do this because I haven't felt much like dating this year!
derekja··on Teardown of the SpaceX Starlink User Terminal
That video was great, thanks.
derekja··on The Nordic concept of friluftsliv – outdoor life
shh, don’t tell people the secret! :-)
derekja··on Hands-Free Coding: How I develop software using dictation and eye-tracking
I think “say goodnight to insomnia” is most likely the one they mean.
derekja··on Patent Lawyer Turned Judge Advertises for Patent Trolls to Come to His Court
Two words: regulatory capture
derekja··on Lyebird: Clone Your Voice
That's great! I'm glad to see any competition in the space. When I first tried Lyrebird a year or 18 months ago the quality wasn't great. It was OK and I could hear a resemblance to the voice it was meant to create, but there were hisses and fuzzy sections and it just wasn't long term listenable. Recently the examples I've heard from Descript have sounded really crisp. Keep on the path you're on! I like your business model better, but from the examples on your website the voices are still not quite as refined. Now what I'd really like is a local means of generating great TTS of my own voice, but that's a different offering.
derekja··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2020)
I've often wondered if it re-sorts, though. When I press more I frequently see postings that I've already read. Not a big deal!
derekja··on Ask HN: What startup/technology is on your 'to watch' list?
UI issues for sure, but the product is great. I have computers in 3 different organizations and the ability to tie them into a coherent virtual site so they can all talk to each other is amazing. I no longer have to worry about having forgotten some file on my home network that I needed at the university, for instance. Looking forward to V2!
derekja··on Ask HN: What startup/technology is on your 'to watch' list?
nice, but what is the benefit over zerotier? Seem to provide very similar end results..
derekja··on Ask HN: Have you been laid off?
yup, I'd be interested in that. Working remotely currently so can make most times work!
derekja··on 25-Hour Digital Myst Clock/Chronometer
hmm, you're right 3" is hard. I find a number of relatively expensive 3.4" ones on aliexpress, but nothing 3". All sorts of cheap 1-2" ones.
derekja··on Quindar Tones: the beeps heard in recordings of astronauts in space
Wow, don't know how I missed that book. Looks great!
derekja··on Show HN: I wrote a book for engineers that want to become engineering managers
I have a PhD. The piece of paper hangs in my bathroom so I can look at it while I shit. It was a personally fulfilling experience that taught me a lot about academic research and and is almost completely divorced from the practice of software engineering management. (and most other things.. I'd suggest never being intimidated by a PhD.) The book is written on a very approachable level, I'm enjoying it so far.
derekja··on Ask HN: Getting started in biology with a software background
Where are you located? A lot of places now have community biology labs in makerspaces that are doing really fun things. Start here: https://wiki.hackerspaces.org/Hackerspaces

Not all of the places on that list will have biology labs, but some will! It's a good way to get some experience at the bench without going the degree route.

derekja··on Biology is the New Tech: Letter from a conference on CRISPR
I agree. Although the tech isn't there yet, it's rapidly coming. Whether the breakthroughs are two years away, or ten, or fifty they are coming. And discovery is accelerated by AI in looking for the solutions in biology. China is making far more investments in this area than is the US at the moment. A decent read from a few days ago: https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/2174815/chin...
derekja··on I analyzed the history of “Who is Hiring?” threads
Since both linkedin and github are owned by microsoft it seems kind of pointless for them to compete.
