derekbaker783··on The SAFe Delusion
Yes
derekbaker783··on The SAFe Delusion
None of that requires SAFe, and would be probably be less costly to achieve without SAFe.
derekbaker783··on Employers should prioritize retention over hiring, study suggests
I've seen this in non-tech (with tech workers) also.
derekbaker783··on Ask HN: Corp gives “contractor” benefits, want “employee” obligations, what now?
If you're in India, and you can work out of an office in Hyderabad, shoot me an email (my username at gmail) with your resume/CV, as I'll be interviewing for multiple, full-time employee roles (with an "enterprisey" non-tech company) in the very near future.
derekbaker783··on Gamification affects software developers: Cautionary evidence from GitHub
Why is enabling Discussions "the wrong move"?

Genuinely curious, as I've gotten help from maintainers using Discussions.

derekbaker783··on Nearly Half of San Franciscans Have Been Victims of Theft, New Poll Says
I've lived in several small towns in upstate New York where it's very common to leave vehicles and dwellings unlocked.
derekbaker783··on Nearly Half of San Franciscans Have Been Victims of Theft, New Poll Says
It probably depends.

When I was a (fairly reckless) teenager, I got into a fight and got "stabbed" in my side (minor wound). Honestly, it's not something I consider as traumatic.

It _was_ an effective way to stop the fight though.

derekbaker783··on Wait vs. Interrupt Culture
It only takes a single sentence sometimes.
derekbaker783··on Wait vs. Interrupt Culture
Personally, I enjoy some "back and forth" (interruptions) during a discussion.
derekbaker783··on Wait vs. Interrupt Culture
Personally, I'll often interrupt when I know someone is wrong about a topic, in the interest of efficiency.
derekbaker783··on Ask HN: Has anyone managed to find enjoyment in their work after burnout?
Personally, getting up at 5AM would be detrimental, unless I was asleep by 9PM (unlikely).
derekbaker783··on Ask HN: Has anyone managed to find enjoyment in their work after burnout?
This. There have been times when I thought about changing careers, but when I look back, that was an obviously terrible idea (in my case).
derekbaker783··on American Airlines is trying to stop a popular app used by flight attendants
From TFA:

"it displays information required by crew members to manage their rosters and work lives in a single app.

The app is particularly popular among the large number of ‘reserve’ flight attendants at American Airlines because it gives them more control over their schedules, and the app has other features such as a calculator to make sure crew are working to legal limits."

derekbaker783··on Data Structures Sketches
There are programming languages where that syntax is used for assignments to mutable vars (F# being one example).

Maybe play around with a language that uses that syntax?

derekbaker783··on Micron picks Syracuse for computer chip plant that would bring up to 9k jobs
Will do.
derekbaker783··on Adobe to acquire Figma for $20B
Can confirm.
derekbaker783··on COBOL’s youth culture
Can confirm this is the case at the some very large American companies.
derekbaker783··on MacBook Air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason
I've had good luck with refurb machines also (but never tried an Apple laptop refurb).
derekbaker783··on Windows10Debloater: Script to remove Windows 10 bloatware (2021)
Friggin MUSL
derekbaker783··on Tell HN: LinkedIn is automatically importing job postings into company profiles
Drop everything beyond N years...
derekbaker783··on Job switchers are earning a lot more than those who stay
It's definitely culturally-dependent.

In the US, no one has ever asked me why I never make it 2 years at a job. I recently got a new job that gave me a senior title and 50% increase in salary.

derekbaker783··on Python’s “type hints” are a bit of a disappointment to me
Not with any TSC settings I've ever used.
derekbaker783··on The satellite imagery industry still has no idea what customers want
(US) Municipal governments that deal with Real Property have similar interests: they use the imagery to help maintain assessment data.
derekbaker783··on DuckDuckGo Removes Pirate Sites and YouTube-DL from Its Search Results
I think they've advertised there for a while.
derekbaker783··on iViewed your API keys
The same applies in the US, unfortunately.
derekbaker783··on Job hunting while day-jobbing (2021)
