derblitzmann··on When swiping supplants scissors: The hidden cost of touchscreens
Oh yeah, I think learned about the 'Ian knot' on hn as well, though I use the secure variant: https://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/secureknot.htm
derblitzmann··on How to commit murder inside a locked room
You might find the Sexy Brutale an interesting game, since it is also centered around a time loop: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sexy_Brutale
derblitzmann··on Report: Most Americans have no real choice in internet providers
Yeah, I'm out in the country with Hughesnet, and it works fine provided you haven't hit the data cap. But streaming 720p or higher is going to be pausing rather consistently.
derblitzmann··on Use of nuclear technology gets green light in Rwanda
Yep. Roughly same source, but a very different "pathway" of energy. Nuclear bombs depend on prompt neutrons, whereas nuclear power depends on delayed neutrons. Hence why the enrichment of the Uranium is important.

And those who bring up the Chernobyl explosion, those were due to Hydrogen gas build up. Which is an interesting case study of Murphy's law.

derblitzmann··on CDC outlines what closing schools, businesses would look like in US pandemic
Not really, other than limiting spread from someone who is potentially infected and making it harder for someone to touch their face (virus on hands getting into body via eyes/nose).
derblitzmann··on How might the coronavirus change our world?
Assuming current trends, it will likely be though of as the 21st century's Spanish flu, though that is assuming that the trends continue.
derblitzmann··on Brad Cox: when OOP was about “Software-ICs” and micro-transactions
One book[1] I read explained this in detail, amongst other similar concepts. It was really interesting and helped me think of how functional concepts could work in OOP languages.

derblitzmann··on Costa Rica has run on 100% renewable energy for 300 days
Hanford isn't a power plant, it was a nuclear production facility for weapons grade nuclear material.
derblitzmann··on Progress has been limited on Germany's shift from nuclear to renewables
The reactor that blew up in Chernobyl was because of the design of the reactor itself. Even at the time it was built, the west never would have green lit the reactor design.
derblitzmann··on Americans Are Delaying Health Care Until Tax Refunds Arrive
And if I am wrong please correct me, but I recall high deductible health insurance became more common/prominent since "obamacare". Which i viewed as at best a half measure at the time.
derblitzmann··on Peltier Application Note – Thermoelectric Cooling [pdf]
Very much not. They be better at acting as insulation.

A heat sink needs high thermal conductivity. Hence why most heat sinks you see are metal.

derblitzmann··on Why 80s BASIC still matters
Have yet to read article, but I believe that it is always beneficial to learn how things were done. If only to gain context around way things are the way they are, ignoring anything else.
derblitzmann··on We Must Defend Free Thought
This is something I know well, since I prefer to keep quiet about x political opinion at work. Since if I'm not perfectly in the expected mold, it could sour relationships critical to my career.
derblitzmann··on Scott Adams’ Financial Advice (2014)
As a first commenter, I think I can say this is at least decent advice. Especially around paying off debts (he specifically mentions credit card debit, but it applies to most forms, Imo). Ignoring the other stuff around Scott Adams, I think this is decent for most, but of course depends on the individual.
derblitzmann··on Steve Jobs hired a career juggler to teach programming to developers
Number 2 reminds me of something my dad has told me a bunch, "it's not how you mess up, it's how you recover"
derblitzmann··on Experts Urge U.S. To Continue Support for Nuclear Fusion Research
If I recall the fusion meme correctly, it is perpetually 10 years from now... Assuming it gets properly funded. Though I also believe that fission research and plants still have their place, especially if you care about carbon emissions.
derblitzmann··on Trying to ‘Save’ the Rural Economy
I know I certainly qualify. I cannot wait to leave the city, even though I'll still need to work there.
derblitzmann··on The internet war on sex is here
Yep, you are free to make your own platform, except don't expect PayPal or any other processor to support you if you don't already fit on online networks.
derblitzmann··on Microsoft Releases a Linux Version of the ProcDump Sysinternals Tool
OEMs are ms' Achilles tendon
derblitzmann··on The Missing Computer Skills of High School Students
I remember this too. Funny thing is that I never got good until I enter the industry after college. And even then, the times I need to type quickly is when I already know what I'm typing, otherwise I'm thinking more than going for WPM.
derblitzmann··on Nobody knows how to cite 4chan mathematicians who solved an interesting problem
Well I know for 4chan, each thread is ephemeral and depending on how active a board is, the thread will be deleted. Which I think is the challenge citing it. Since even a day or two after finding it, it can be lost.
derblitzmann··on The City of Seattle Accidentally Gave Me 32M Emails for $40
Well, like most of Seattle's efforts, it gets fucked up, mostly because it is from Seattle.

Note: I am a Seattle resident and I expect nothing less.

derblitzmann··on Go 2.0 Error Handling Requirements
I'll annonance my bias towards go. But from what I understand, allowing exceptions allow for more complex code parhs. Whereas explicit error handling forces you to handle it in the moment.
derblitzmann··on [dead]
I know my father has been questioned why he hasn't turned his green card into citizen ship over the years. Note, this was pre Trump too.
derblitzmann··on [dead]
As it should be. Those taking advantage of a system are harming those who are trying to work within such a system according to it's rules.
derblitzmann··on Digital Capitalism’s War on Leisure
Yeah, you need only look at traditional sports to see that. A leisurely game of amateurs/hobbyists will still have a hierarchy in terms of individuals and what aspect of the game they are proficient in.
derblitzmann··on Google de-emphasizes 'Don't Be Evil' motto in its code of conduct
Taken from the original quote of Nietzsche.
derblitzmann··on Why the Luddites Matter
I am generally the same. I have a smart tv, but mostly because it was 4k than it's "smart" capabilities. Once I am out of an apartment and into a house. I am going to have a much stronger/stricter network policies along with avoiding other "smart" devices.
derblitzmann··on Magnasanti: Large and Terrifying SimCity (2010)
No, ai will help expend it
derblitzmann··on Universal Basic Income Is Not Feasible
Yeah, I generally agree. I think one thing that is often forgotten/only mentioned in comments is trade schools. A good education in a trade can bring about a good income. Due to the lack of people joining the trades as university has been in vogue.
