True.

However, if the EU is silent because it considers Apple's reaction acceptable, the new laws are meaningless, unnecessary, a total waste of time, and an embarrassment to the EU.

So my hope is that they realize this and the silence is due to the EU preparing to put Apple in its place.

You're not talking about a sandbox then?

A native app won't prevent Google or Facebook (or Apple) from tracking you. In my experience, native apps typically always require login, and then fingerprinting is unnecessary.

Avoiding their services, and using an open source and privacy respecting browser with uBlock Origin installed will protect you however.

The latter can be done on all OSes I've used -- except iOS.

You're speaking like Apple will get away with their malicious compliance and petulant behavior.

I'm not so sure they will, now that the cat is (finally!) out of the bag.

depressedpanda··on Write code for the web
Well, I wish Apple advocates would stop strawmanning and posting incorrect generalizing accusations.

I care deeply about privacy. That means I trust the browser sandbox a lot more than native apps. There's obviously a reason sites like Twitter and Reddit try to force their native apps on you as soon as you visit their web page on a phone -- it'll allow them to spy more on you.

> Of course, Apple's lackluster support or PWAs doesn't help.

Holding the web back is entirely intentional and makes strategic sense from Apple's point of view. They're well aware that a majority of apps would work perfectly fine as web apps -- but that also removes Apple from the equation. Only allowing Safari on iOS and intentionally gimping it solves the problem.

I mean, I can't even blame them. Can't lose out on that sweet 30% cut, y'know?

I'm only disappointed that legislation took this long to catch up to their shenanigans, and only in the EU.

> Partially correct because Linux is running under a sandbox and all applications within Linux are in that sandbox.

No no, when I wrote 'run Linux natively', I meant pure Linux right on the bare metal (on a subset of models). One random hit I got when searching: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+convert+a+generic+Chrome...

> My apologies on the snark [...]

No worries, and I realize my comment probably comes across differently than intended when in a frustrated mindset. To be honest, that parting shot took me a bit by surprise, and I was about to respond in kind, worsening the quality of discussion. Thankfully, HNs comment guidelines got the better of me : - )

Why partially correct for personally purchased Chromebooks? Apart from what you mentioned, it's also (or at least has been, I haven't tried in a while) possible to install Linux natively on a Chromebook. That's a lot more open than anything running iOS.

You didn't specify managed Chromebooks, but I also didn't know they could be locked down to such a degree, thanks for informing me.

> None of which you addressed in your knee-jerk response that is about as coherent as "M$" was back in the day (and I did my share of that when I was young and stupid).

I honestly don't see why you felt the need to add this last paragraph. Was it "iDevices"? I just used it for convenience. Either way, the snark is totally unnecessary, your comment is better without it.

> I'm happy to guide my parents to use and download apps from the app store without worrying about it.

You shouldn't be. There have been plenty of scams in the App Store.

Chromebooks aren't as locked down as iDevices

> like they do on the other platforms.

What other platforms? I've never been pushed to install another store on Android for example, so I highly doubt the situation would be much different on iOS.

Aren't there restrictions against using GPL stuff in the App Store?
depressedpanda··on Zed, a collaborative code editor, is now open source
If you value kindness, consider empathy. The person you're somewhat haughtily tone policing is obviously annoyed about wasting a totally unnecessary amount of time on something ultimately useless to them.

And the feedback was constructive (and easily actionable): be upfront about the very limited platform support, don't waste people's time.

When will it be available in Sweden?

I followed the prompt on the website and signed up for the newsletter, but I got so much marketing spam that was totally irrelevant to my one and only question that I had to unsubscribe.

I regularly must sit and wait for vscode to catch up rendering the text I just typed. I suspect the main culprit is the vim extension, but unfortunately that's one of the few extensions I cannot go without.

They cracked down on ads talking about privacy, to the applause of everyone. Then they launched their own ad tech service. It's obvious privacy was used as an excuse to make more money.

I hope you're not asking for any evidence of their authoritarianism, it should be apparent to anyone who knows anything about the company. They readily cooperate with authoritarian regimes; look at their behavior in China, or how they assisted the totalitarian regime in Belarus to the detriment of pro democracy protesters. "Obeying local laws" is not a valid excuse for unethical behavior, but is very convenient if all you care about is profit maximization.

The controllers connected directly to Stadia servers over WiFi, avoiding an unnecessary roundtrip via the device displaying the video feed.
depressedpanda··on Google Cuts Jobs in Engineering and Other Divisions
Apple might be less bad than, say Oracle, but it's still an evil mega corp.

Their privacy angle is little more than mere marketing. Authoritarianism is in their DNA.

By no stretch of the imagination is it an ethical company, and people really need to stop treating it as such.

Some time ago, I found a site that provided different variants of VMs you could download which contained exploits you could utilize to pwn the machines. There were also walkthroughs and guides available to teach you how to break in.

Unfortunately I can no longer find the site, and my Google fu has failed me.

Unlike Hack the Box, no signup was necessary, you could just download the VM and get started.

Does anyone here know of any good alternatives they'd like to recommend?

depressedpanda··on Looking into the Stadia Controller Bluetooth Mode Website
I think you're missing the point. In this case it being a website is an awesome thing.

The underlying tech is powered by the WebSerial protocol. We basically already have the executable you're asking for. As long as Google supplies the firmware blob (and js source, though this can probably just be ripped from the current web page), anyone will be able to put up a server, and anyone with a modern browser will be able to visit the site and update -- without having to install anything locally.

Given that a 'native' app would probably be some bloated Electron abomination, I was actually pleasantly surprised that Google chose to solve the firmware update problem the way they did; it worked flawlessly for me on Linux which is seldom the case when it comes to these things.

depressedpanda··on Looking into the Stadia Controller Bluetooth Mode Website
This.

I also bought the Cyberpunk bundle, which was great bang for the buck. I was also quite impressed by how well the Stadia tech worked.

However, due to Google's reputation I refused to spend any more money on the service, and would not recommend it to anyone, as it would all be wasted once they inevitably would shut Stadia down.

That said, I was pleasantly surprised by how well they handled the shutdown. If I'd known they'd refund people I would have been more willing to spend more money on their service.

I wonder why nobody at Google seems to realize or care that their poor track record is hurting their bottom line?

> illustrations or cover art or a forward, etc,

OT, but isn't it called "foreword"? You're the second person in this thread calling it "forward" which means something completely different to me, while "foreword" is basically a literal translation of the word for it in my native language.

Not OP but this is how it is for me.

Also, anecdotally, from people I've spoken to, it seems they get either caries or tartar. It's a decent sample size, more than a dozen.

Yet the last time I went to a dentist, 2010 or so, she claimed to have never heard of this, and I couldn't find any good studies either. Do you know of any?

depressedpanda··on How Wikipedia became the last good place on the internet
If you want to get into the reeds of it, I think "assertive" and "strong" are too positively loaded (which I guess is why you didn't use them). However I would say the same applies to robust, coupled with the fact that "robust" on its own is not really applicable to the kind of communication you're referring to. The positive undertones are probably also why you saw a bunch of unnecessary knee jerk virtue signaling in response.

I would personally have stuck with just "direct" (which is neutral), and perhaps added "blunt" (which is neutral-negative).

depressedpanda··on How Wikipedia became the last good place on the internet
I don't know how to interpret this answer. The nature vs nurture aspect of the alleged gender preference against direct/blunt speech was never even discussed.

It seems to me like people are just letting their own biases shine through. Perhaps the people claiming sexism falsely believe that a higher preference for direct/blunt speech is always superior somehow?

depressedpanda··on How Wikipedia became the last good place on the internet
Why?

The claim was that women to a higher degree find "direct, robust speech" alienating. Disregarding whether it's true or not, and my own reservations against using "robust" as a descriptor, it looks like a fairly neutral statement to me.

Using web browsers to access apps is actually a boon in this regard: the whole UI is exposed via the DOM, and you can use JavaScript to interact with it for macros -- and it's cross platform as it works on any OS that can run a web browser!

In contrast Automator/AppleScript only works on macOS afaict.

depressedpanda··on Using extra Firefox profiles to make my life better
You might not mind, but it's a papercut for a regular user wanting to use profiles.

The thing is that it's a also problem that can easily be resolved with some small UI tweaks. Everything we need for first class handling of profiles in Firefox already exists, save a more intuitive UI.

depressedpanda··on Using extra Firefox profiles to make my life better
> Genuinely, what else are chrome/edge offering that is a deal breaker for you?

Unless you fiddle around with using different themes for each profile, or install kludgy extensions, there's nothing indicating which profile a window is currently using.
