Firefox is a virtual container that executes web applications safely. It’s too much memory still, but OTOH half an OS. It also doesn’t share anything with the OS like Safari
dep_b··on Astra for Coding: Why Are We Doing This Again?
I tried Astra and it started to fix issues in my code when I just asked a question about it. Then I spent half an afternoon to make sure we really didn’t need that change.

That felt so counter productive.

These models+harnesses seem to be getting better at yolo mode one shotting stuff at the cost of being a useful tool for more controlled software engineering.

dep_b··on SwiftUI After 7 Years
The odd thing is that UIKit can easily be transformed into a much more pleasant experience if you just fix some of the worst API’s, like embedding ViewControllers and adding constraints in code.
dep_b··on EU Exempts Apple Watch and AirPods from Battery Removal Requirements
Loss or breakage.

I had the original AirPods and vowed to never buy them again because replacing the battery was so expensive.

Just ridiculous to throw away expensive audio equipment because battery replacement is as expensive as 50% of a new pair.

While good headphones from the 70s are still good, maybe with some foam replacements.

dep_b··on Microsoft new Outlook takes 10 seconds to do what Outlook Classic does instantly
Yet I never had issues doing any design thrown at me using AppKit, UIKit or SwiftUI.

Only storyboards and XIBs were hard to style globally.

All of the flexibility, but a lot faster than web

It’s funny how a US$30 ReSharper license that would give me a 20% performance boost in programming was out of the question, while me burning US$3000 per month on tokens for a 40% boost in performance never was questioned
dep_b··on The bottleneck was never the code
True
dep_b··on How I write software with LLMs
“…if you give it good context…” that’s what the architect session is for basically. You throw around ideas and store the direction you want to go.

Then you execute it with a clean context.

Clean context is needed for maximum performance while not remembering implementation dead ends you already discarded

dep_b··on Please Do Not A/B Test My Workflow
I think stable API versions are going to be really big. I’d rather have known bugs u can work around than waking up to whatever thing got fixed that made another thing behave differently.
dep_b··on Peter Thiel's Antichrist Lectures
Poland is quite intertwined.

But Catholicism has its own government, which prevents individual catholic countries to veer off too much.

dep_b··on Peter Thiel's Antichrist Lectures
It’s almost like they reject the parts of the bible featuring Christ, and only cling on to the Old Testament and the parts after Christ as their guide.

In lack of a better word, that sounds more like anti-Cristian

Thanks that’s correcr
dep_b··on Man accidentally gains control of 7k robot vacuums
Internet connections on devices are an anti feature to me. I need something to work reliably without internet. And then maybe add some extras through internet access through open and secure protocols, so I can always write my own implementation.

dep_b··on ASML staffing changes could result in a net reduction of around 1700 positions
Hungary was outpaced by all WU countries in the last 20 years:

https://gki.hu/language/en/2024/06/18/hungarys-20-years-in-t...

I guess it’s attractive for its low wages? But not because of something Orbán pulled off.

dep_b··on ASML staffing changes could result in a net reduction of around 1700 positions
Bloomberg also has a link, but doesn’t mention ASML is actually adding 1400 engineers while cutting 4500 managers:

dep_b··on ASML staffing changes could result in a net reduction of around 1700 positions
Apologies for the Dutch source, but I couldn’t find any source in English yet.

“ ASML plans to eliminate approximately 3,000 of its 4,500 management positions in engineering. The expectation is that approximately 1,400 people will be able to move into new engineering roles.”

dep_b··on New Safari developer tools provide insight into CSS Grid Lanes
It’s much easier to make stuff work with Safari first then last.
dep_b··on The Post-American Internet
“In the EU” only because some countries might have individual laws, unless you have more information about the EU specifically causing that?

The country with the worst “bad opinion, police comes knocking” is the recently seceded UK.

And I guess Germany has something against nazism?

dep_b··on 2026 will be my year of the Linux desktop
Problem with SwiftUI is that it only works well on macOS 26, maybe one version prior. AppKit works well on all macOS versions.

Building a macOS 26 only app in SwiftUI today is a great UX, just as fast as AppKit.

But it takes quite some effort to turn an iOS SwiftUI app into a real macOS experience. Though most macOS optimizations help for iPadOS as well.

dep_b··on What an unprocessed photo looks like
I had similar experiences working with the RAW data API's that appeared a few years ago in iOS. My photos were barely better than the stuff I would take with my old Nokia!

I have a lot of respect they manage to get pictures to get to look as good as they do on phones.

dep_b··on Programmers and software developers lost the plot on naming their tools
Worse is the Git UI, where random English words that seem to have a clear meaning in the context of source control don't do at all what you think they do, or five different things, or are really just a bunch of other commands wrapped together for less typing (like "pull").

I would rather have fantasy names than wrong names.
