dento··on Introduction to Apple Silicon
For a hands-on introduction, writing a minimal kernel in Rust, see https://os.phil-opp.com/
dento··on Librarian's Letter to Google Security
The problem is almost impossible to solve. When a person has forgotten their password, lost their device and doesn't have 2fa recovery codes in hand or a recovery account set up, there is no way verify the identity of the user. Real-world identity is not linked with the account, since many goverments don't provide an online identity service (and even if they did, the people in question probably wouldn't have digital IDs either). Moreover, any manual processing is prohibitively expensive and vulnerable to social engineering attacks.
dento··on Did Manuel Ramírez spend years in prison for murdering a man who is still alive?
Death penalty with proper trial is more expensive than life-without-parole sentence, at least in the US currently [1]. I'm not sure if this means that non-death-penalty crimes are not inspected properly. In such system the only reason for the capital punishment is revenge.

dento··on Reference count, don't garbage collect
Nitpicking: arbitrary pauses can occur even without syscalls, when the OS preempts the program.

More nitpicking: on x86-64, SMI interrupts can cause arbitrary pauses even without any software control involved. Hard realtime on x86-64 is not possible.

dento··on Knuth changes his mind on Bernoulli number B_1
I case it helps, this is how it was taught to me when introducing proofs.

For your example case, it's simply the matter of seeing multiplication as repeated addition. So, 2x is x+x, and from this follows:

2(x+y) = (x+y)+(x+y) = x+y+x+y = x+x+y+y = 2x+2y

However, for the other case, when we convert the multiplication by 2 to an addition and back:

2(xy) = (xy)+(xy) = xy+xy = 2xy

Now we can show that this works for n instead of two:

n(x+y) = (x+y)+..[n times]..+(x+y) = x+..[n times]..+x + y+..[n times]..+y = nx+ny

And for multiplication:

n(xy) = xy+..[n times]..+xy = nxy

dento··on Remote Attestation is coming back
Sure, and you can grow all food yourself as well, grocery stores are a convenience as well.
dento··on Remote Attestation is coming back
The solution is ok while you have options. But when all banks require attestation to access your account, you can no longer choose.
dento··on Open source body quits GitHub, urges you to do the same
> If you change your license to forbid removing the license, then there's a good chance that it doesn't hold any legal power.

But almost all licenses already do that, for example the MIT license says:

> The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software.

dento··on Open source body quits GitHub, urges you to do the same
> But most software can be compiled (and even obfuscated), making it unpractical to further modify and redistribute a copy.

Tell that to people who remove DRM restrictions, fix bugs and then distribute the result. The only reason there aren't companies and university courses dedicated for such modifications is that it's illegal.

dento··on Apple is not defending browser engine choice
Positives like not having "save" ability on documents? Or not having push notifications so messaging applications, calendars and such is not possible? Both of these can be abused of course, but not having them forces many categories of apps to be native.
dento··on Crafting Interpreters: A Review
I've been loosely following the book with Rust, and no issues so far. Both the compiler and interpreter are implementable without much issues. You'll have to adapt a bit, but in general you can use the same methods.
dento··on Cool desktops don’t change
> - Manual transmissions in cars

Only in US, in EU about 80% of new cars have manual transmission.

dento··on Why does this code execute more slowly after strength-reducing multiplications?
Usually faster version always consumes less power, as this allows the core more time in sleep. This is known as the race-to-sleep or race-to-idle paradox.
dento··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
1. people can say whatever they want

Content moderation is difficult.

dento··on Ask HN: When did 7 interviews become “normal”?
> The truth is that nobody likes being interviewed. Getting tested and judged by strangers isn’t fun.

I do. It might be because I'm way better at performing in interviews than in the actual job. It's also way more exciting to do. I have also done interviews on the hiring side of the table, and that's not nearly as enjoyable. However, especially finding people to work with you is quite rewarding.

dento··on The campaign to shut down YouTube-dl continues
Why not skip the display completely and just go with a capture card? They are cheap and have none of the issues with lights and timings.
dento··on Be anonymous
Some blockchain project offer grants for (completely legal) programming work, and some of them wont require real world identification.
dento··on Does Not Translate
In Finnish, there is -hko/-hkö, which is essentially the same thing. For instance:

blue -> bluish => sininen -> sinisehkö

formal -> formalish => muodollinen -> muodollisehko

apparent -> apparent-ish => ilmeinen -> ilmeisehkö

compressable -> compressablish => pakkautuva -> pakkautuvahko

dento··on Losing our product to button syndrome
Chatbots serve a real purpose: they hide information and frustrate users so that they will not request refunds and such.
dento··on We need to reclaim our attention
https://www.youtube.com/c/AndreasKling

Kling is building an operating system and a web browser, and frequently relases videos about the work. Most go through development of a single feature. The videos are unedited to show all of the development steps: design, implementation and debugging. A Masters program usually has more theory and larger scope, but this is more hands-on and in-depth.

dento··on A realization of why email is critical infrastructure for the Internet
Regional domain providers, i.e. .cc country code domains, usually give you legal rights to that domain as long as you pay the fees.
dento··on Ubisoft deleted account with hundreds of dollars’ worth of games for inactivity
> No, you can't do it because the seller of the game does not allow you to do it. There is no law requiring sellers to lock down their games with DRM or other forms of restriction.

DRM is usually bypassed within hours or days of the game release. After that it is still illegal to copy the game from your friend.

dento··on Ask HN: What is your strongest contrarian opinion?
Computer security cannot be solved as long as the users don't understand the decisions they are making, so that will never happen. Walled gardens exist to remove those decisions, so that users can't hurt themselves.
dento··on Ask HN: What is your strongest contrarian opinion?
Some of the common answers that make me differ:

> Social welfare should not be free. There are low skilled jobs that can be done by most. ...

Most people are not able to do anything productive for the society, expect for in a limited number of positions. It would be more expensive to provide a job for everybody (training, commute, supervision). Many jobs are cheaper to automate than have a human to do it without paying salary. Many others are simply not worth doing at all.

> Election campain "propaganda" should be legally binding

"When the Facts Change, I Change My Mind. What Do You Do, Sir?"

> All platforms that reach the level of google search in peoples life should be declared public utility and punished for biases and manipulation of any kind.

Why would anybody build a platform like that, then? Punishing for any biases sounds like a hard task as well, as the main use of a platform like google search is the "bias" to include more useful results. Moreover, this kind of thing would become a political too rather quickly. I agree on the idea level, but I don't see any way to do this well.

dento··on Why most gas stations don’t make money from selling gas
It might even help; if EV takes 20-40 minutes to charge, that's perfect time for a store visit, lunch, etc.
dento··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2021)
The link seems to be broken
dento··on Show HN: I made an interactive anti-procrastination video course
Thanks! I'll watch it tomorrow.
dento··on OSSU: Path to a free, self-taught education in computer science
In Finland you can usually complete first year of the bachelors studies without enrolling to the university. Some of the courses, like first programming courses in CS, are free. Others cost a small fee, around 75€ per course. If you decide to enroll in the uni later, those will be acknowledged as well. They also have Digital Education For All program that has all of the first year studies for free.

I personally did complete about six months worth of studies while still in the secondary education.
