dendory··on This is a web page
I personally still code HTML 4.01 instead of 5 by habit. I also use <font> and other things that HTML5 is trying to get rid of. But I cling to older things. I also write all my code in Notepad++.
dendory··on This is a web page
I don't know about the over-reliance on words, I think images and videos are just fine on the web, but I do agree with the sentiment that pages have become way too bloated around the web. When a single news site that should be telling you about a story has dozens of external scripts, hundreds of assets and takes way too long to display, things have gotten too far.
dendory··on The real reason to fight nuclear power has nothing to do with health risks
I see a lot of arguments there going against nuclear plants but very little about alternatives. Of course I'd rather we all use solar panels, but until that becomes viable on a large scale, we need to move off the coal burning plants that currently produces almost all our grid's energy.
dendory··on Googling ourselves to death
Of my immediate family, only one has a Facebook profile, and none of them would come up on Google, none share any image online nor do they trust things like cloud storage or online banking. It's worth noting that a big portion of the world is still fairly unknown to Google.
dendory··on Microsoft admits Patriot Act can access EU-based cloud data (2011)
Let's not forget that by default, Windows 8 now stores even your personal documents in the cloud. Basically everyone around the world is being directly spied upon by the NSA. We need a strong offshore tech community with real choices ASAP.
dendory··on Google replacing all my titles
There's clear protocols set. The page <title> is supposed to be the anchor text. Google thinks they know better, and expects everybody to adapt.
dendory··on Google replacing all my titles
That's the point of my post. The page <title> should be the anchor. But because Google thinks they know better, they do extensive algorithm parsing (and yes I understand the goal is to foil spammer) then come up with random crap. They test their crap against WordPress, and if all looks fine, then they call it a day.
dendory··on EFF Makes Formal Objection to DRM in HTML5
When I try to view video content, being told that I am not wanted as a user is more common than not. If I go on Hulu, ABC, NBC, and even many YouTube videos, I am not that the maker of the video did not figure out a profitable enough ad model for my country so I should just go away. This country ban is so common because Flash players make it trivial to do so. If you extend the same to all types of web content, I fear this DRM will be used for far more than just some random Hollywood movies.
dendory··on Google to Microsoft: Remove your YouTube App from the Windows Phone Store
But isn't the point here that Microsoft doesn't want to have to build the app? Google builds YouTube apps for all major platforms but shafts Windows Phone because of their war with Microsoft. So Microsoft is forced to build their own, so they decided they will build it to be best for users, not Google, hence no ads, able to download videos, etc.
dendory··on Writing Effective Welcome Emails
Every web site I sign up to these days, I'm 100% certain that from that point forward I will now be spammed by them on a regular basis. It's a simple fact of the modern web now and I despise it. But when those emails look like this one, I hate them even more. Why? Because a normal form spam mail is easy to recognize. I can hit the spam button in under a second. But when they use my first name, sound all happy and cheery, and talk like they're my best friend, I have to actually read the first sentence to see that it's spam. It not only takes me longer, but it makes them seem even worse. To me an email like that doesn't tell me they are more interested to 'engage', but instead that they want to trick people to read them. You know what I want? For them to never send me any email unless I specifically request it.
dendory··on Dumped by Google
The most interesting part was the reason he believes the account was suspended. He was working on a spreadsheet containing usernames and passwords. If that's really the case, it means some automated system scans not only your email, but documents you work on, for things like password lists, and right away assumes you're up to no good, killing your account. Scary.
dendory··on Facebook Home over a week later: only 500K installs with a two-star user rating
These numbers are misleading. Facebook Home only works on a handful of devices. Even some of the devices that will actually allow you to download it, sometimes the install will then claim it is not supported. A lot of the reviews whine that the app is just not available to them. From people who actually can use it, Home seems rather well liked by Facebook users.
dendory··on Amazon Coins Launching
The 'why' is the same reason Xbox points exist. Because it makes the company more money than dealing with micro transactions. Amazon saw Bitcoin's success and tried to use its popularity to name this a virtual currency. Except they failed in the very first sentence, where they start with 'US only'.
dendory··on We searched for Porn. We found you
These guys are going to be sued out of business, or worse..
dendory··on Tell HN: My Web App has 13 Users
I was wondering why no one was tackling the issue of posting to multiple social networks, and instead all we saw were services that clone posts from one network to the next, services that usually get shut down from the networks. So I made my own a while back that can post to Twitter, Facebook, G+, etc in customized ways depending if I have a URL or not, automatically shortening it, etc. Otherwise I would give yours a try.
dendory··on Tell HN: My Web App has 13 Users
Having great ideas and failing to get any traction is something me and I would be many people are familiar with. Of course we mostly hear about the successes.
dendory··on More than 500,000 Google Reader users have joined Feedly in the past 48 hours
I'm happy for them but I just don't like their interface. Anyone knows if Feeddler has plans to keep going? I like that app.
dendory··on The Google Graveyard - Leave a flower for a deceased Google product
When it's no longer profitable, like (almost) every other business on Earth.
dendory··on Why DRM is such a fucking stupid idea
I've written at length about this before. All DRM providers will go away at some point, or decide keeping the server running isn't profitable anymore. This is why I convert any digital good I buy, and if I can't, then I don't buy.
dendory··on Don't learn how to code, learn how to make things
I love to make my own web apps. I made my own system for cloud bookmarks, sharing, notes, contact, news feed, etc. I prefer making it because then I can tweak it and modify it the way I want without having to wait on some company. But I dislike coding, I hate syntax errors, or debugging code for an hour because of a dumb mistake. I could never be a full time coder. But I still love making things.
dendory··on Sick of SEO Scumbags
Honestly there's so many different scams online that people taking shortcuts in the SEO world is fairly minor. The problem is that Google searches are so crucial to so many people. Back before they were around, if you wanted to start a business you needed startup cash for marketing, ads, etc. You needed to become a well known brand. Now everyone and their dog are told they can start an online business, pay $100 for an SEO package and call it a day. But just like developers basing their code on Facebook, shops basing their traffic on Google rankings are always at risk.
dendory··on Building something cool on your own? I want to interview you
Not to hijack this thread, but since so many appear wanting to be interviewed, if any of you work on the graphics side (designer, animator, modeller, ...) let me know, TideArt.com could use some more interviews.
dendory··on Require companies to use the term "licensing" instead of "buying" with DRM goods
You miss the point. DRMed digital goods cannot be resold. When you go to Kindle and get an ebook, all of the buttons say buy prominently, yet everything in the license says you are merely renting it for an undetermined amount of time, until the company decides otherwise. How is that not false advertising? They should be forced to change their text.
dendory··on Require companies to use the term "licensing" instead of "buying" with DRM goods
This soooo needs to happen, but the lobby against such a bill would be so gigantic that it would never pass. The vast majority of people do not realize just how restrictive the digital goods terms of service typically are, and it will take many years and many instances of accounts being locked, hacked, companies shutting down auth servers or going out of business before changes happen.
dendory··on List of Online Services EA Has Shut Down
Nope, because then that would eat into EA's profits for [insert brand new title here]. That's just business sense!
dendory··on List of Online Services EA Has Shut Down
And this is what's wrong with always-on DRM. A sad state of gaming we are in now. In 20 years, we will look back at the games from the 80s and 90s, then see a wide empty gap from an era where almost all new games required vendor support and are therefore unplayable anymore.
dendory··on Spotify and Facebook: Is that phishing?
I somehow thought that apps could no longer 'login' to social network accounts using usernames/passwords, so that they would have to use OAuth instead? There should be a way that Facebook and Twitter would prevent an app from using login information in order to bypass the 'app authorization' dialog which is supposed to be shown to users to tell them what the app can do to their account.
dendory··on Posterous will turn off on April 30
This is yet another reminder of how important it is to own your content, and why a blog is best hosted at a domain you control.
dendory··on Google Fails the Turing Test
Google sucks at customer support, news at 11.

Honestly reading this, nothing surprised me. We all know Google is incapable of decent customer support, and even if we do pay money for something like a phone, the very corporate nature that reigns in this company still sees us as products of free services. Here's a thought, instead of hiring outsourced help for their Nexus sales crew, why not use their AdWords support staff? Those people are obviously the only ones trained to deal with humans.

dendory··on Tweetmap - Animated maps of real-time tweets using contiguous cartograms
Not to rain on this but I prefer tweetping.net from last week, although it seems not to be working for me right now. Similar concept, but showed tweets as tiny lights across the world.
