demallien··on Declassified photos from Tinian Island as the B-29 “Enola Gay” was being loaded
Sigh. I should have pointed out that I used to be an Air Force engineer. Although my post was a massive oversimplification, it was not for any of the reasons you pointed out. No, dev time would not be more than 1 engineer, at least not for the bomb guidance part. Most bombs that are dropped do not need massive accuracy - anywhere in a 10m radius will do the job nicely. There ate a few targets where you want 1m accuracy, but that's the exception. A phone 'a sensors should be able to do the job sufficiently well.

No, where you're really going to get burned in dev is hooking the bomb up to the aircraft's targeting system. That's a world of pain right there. The best solution might probably involve making a Bluetooth widget that hooks up to the aircraft and then talks to the bomb via radio. They could be pre-paired in the factory. Not ideal though. You're also going to need to spend a ridiculous sum of money on sales, just to get your foot in the door.

Wow. There's an industry in massive need of disruption. I'm thinking a mid-range android phone + some servos + software would do the trick. Let's say one year's dev for a reasonable engineer, so $100k + $300 in parts. Make a 1-Iraq-war-day's worth, and you'd have the unit price down to hundreds of dollars, not tens of thousands.
demallien··on Keynote by John Carmack at Oculus Connect 2014 [video]
I feel you in the pain of dealing with interlacing, but Carmack was envisaging a more flexible solution than plain two up interlacing. In particular his solution also made HDR imaging possible, which sounds like a worthwhile win to compensate for the pain of interlacing.
demallien··on Artificial sweeteners linked to glucose intolerance
Artificial sweeteners are not "carb rich". That's kind of the point of them...
demallien··on Boeing-SpaceX Team Split Space Taxi Award
I rather suspect that it's simply because SpaceX needs less money to finalise their space flight capability. That's typically how government contracts work - suppliers make bids and the government chooses the winner based on price and other criteria. Presumably SpaceX's bid was lower than Boeing's.

Off topic: it's "making do", not "making due". Non American English speakers pronounce the two quite differently, so this is a really startling error for us...

"Women are far better complainers than men"

Why thank you drcross for giving us a demonstration of why women are going to need a little more encouragement than men to get into tech...

"The exceptions to the notion that men dominate society (like Angela Merkel and Hillary Clinton) prove that there are no roadblocks specifically preventing women from achieving the highest positions of power and meritocracy"

Yes, and the fact that the current president is black is proof that there's no racial discrimination roadblocks in the US. Hey, do you want to buy a bridge? I have one I'm trying to sell, runs from NYC to Brooklyn, you'll make a killing on the tolls.

demallien··on Conjecture Regarding Larger iPhone Displays
Ahhh, sorry John, I didn't want to put words in your mouth, but I wrote that post on my phone, so I went with a shorter version of you without the caveats / conditions that you mentioned. My bad...
demallien··on SpaceX rocket explodes during testing over Texas
You uh, do realize that this was a test-bed rocket right? Designed to do experimental things?

Also, I was not aware of any Falcon 9 exploding previously. What on earth are you talking about?

demallien··on Hard Science About Diet
If I was an inanimate heat engine, you would have me dead to rights. But I'm not, I'm a living creature with free will (or a good approximation thereof). If I start feeling hungry, I'm going to want to eat, and it's not much use telling me that I shouldn't, if my body is crying out for more food I'll listen to it more than you (whereby "I" I mean an average person - it just so happens that personally I'm capable of resisting the urge, but I know I'm in the minority on this one).

When you eat carbohydrates, your body produces insulin, which encourages your body to suck the glycogen out of circulation, and store it in triglycerides. Congratulations, you just got fatter, and worse still, because all of that glycogen has just been stored away, you're feeling hungry again.

That means that if you can find foods that help keep your body from sending the "hungry" signal (by e.g not triggering the insulin-response), then you will naturally eat less.

demallien··on Conjecture Regarding Larger iPhone Displays
So what's your point? For what it's worth, Gruber is on record as not going to buy the 5.5" version, as it's too large (the Talk Show podcasts of recent weeks). He also still believes that the smaller form factor is better, but as Apple doesn't appear to be continuing the 4" line, what's a guy like Gruber, who is all-in on Apple, supposed to do? Not talk about Apple?
demallien··on Hard Science About Diet
Here's the thing. Your advice has been constantly given to people wanting to lose weight for half a century. During that period, despite the people receiving the advice wanting to lose weight, the population has become massively obese. Makes me wonder why you're so cock-sure of yourself.

Anyway, Taubes deals very effectively with the argument you're presenting. The gist is that the number of kilo joules consumed does not have a particularly good correlation with fat stored, because the fat storage mechanism is mediated by insulin, which is heavily influenced by the consumption of carbohydrates.

Activate Developer Tools in the preferences of Safari. This gives you a Developer menu in the toolbar. When a site refuses to play video on your Mac because it needs Flash, you tell Safari to pretend it's an iPad. The site invariably serves you the video you wanted, without Flash.
demallien··on Paris syndrome
No, Parisians suck. They will tell you that themselves if you ask. I say this as someone that has been living in Paris since 2003, so I think I have a pretty good handle in the city.
demallien··on Paris syndrome
No, Paris is objectively bad for this - even French tourists from other regions will say so. Even Parisians will say so. That said, it is an error to attribute it to any racial characteristics, as French people outside of Paris (and to a lesser extent Marseille) are absolutely lovely and welcoming.

It's more a case of the stress of living in a big city, and in that respect mirrors the reputations that New York and London have in their own country (it always makes me chuckle to hear Americans complaining about how abrupt New Yorkers are, as a non-American I consider the baseline of friendliness of Americans to be so high that even the lower than average New Yorker still rates high on the friendliness scale in a global sense).

demallien··on Ask HN Mods: Why Do You Completely Change What Users Submit?
No, the mods have definitely become heavier recently. I saw one the other day which was a letter from Richard Feynman to an ex-student, explaining to him, amongst other things, how to choose problems to work on. The original title mentioned that it was from Richard Feynman, the modded title was just something like "How to choose problems to work on", with no mention of Feynman, which is so generic and boring that I would never have clicked on the link.

Dear mods, modding is something to use when there is a clear threat to community values. The default position, if you are in doubt, should be to do nothing.

demallien··on Inspecting Yosemite's Icons
It's not a button, and isn't supposed to be one. It even has a shadow underneath it - I'm hoping it's just a way of quickly being able to identify that a Mac is running a beta of Mac OS X, and that it will go away with the official release.
demallien··on Teaching creationism as scientifically valid now banned in all UK public schools
False equivalence. Science is simply making hypotheses about how the world works, and testing thises hypotheses with experiments. Everyone does thus, not just scientists. When he plant on my window sill is looking a bit ill, I might hypothesise that it's not getting enough water. I then test the hypothesis by watering the plant lord. If the plant still looks sickly I discard the water hypothesis, and may try for the sunlight hypothesis. The only difference when it's scientists, is that as professionals, they know what has already been tried elsewhere, so they don't repeat the same erroneous experiment needlessly.

Creationists actively reject evidence. I see no good coming from science bending to compromise with active ignorance.

demallien··on Typeracer – Improve/test typing speed via online typing races
For what it's worth, I used type racer to learn to touchtype. Took me from about 25 wpm to about 65 wpm. I seem to have plateaued there though - I actually type at around 90, but with mistakes. The game doesn't seem like a good tool for shaking out the mistakes.

Another problem is that it doesn't teach you all the weird punctuation we use as programmers - I still look at my keyboard when typing code, which I don't have to do fit normal text...

demallien··on Programmers’ Build Errors: A Case Study at Google [pdf]
It's a big system, and not something that you can do piecemeal. You basically need management buy-in. So I've been busy recruiting support from other developers and lower-level managers, writing memos that describe the problem to the higher-ups and so on.
demallien··on Programmers’ Build Errors: A Case Study at Google [pdf]
Heh. In my last job we used Gentoo as the build system for an embedded system. It was a joy to use. In my current job we use naked Makefiles chained together. I waste somewhere near 50% of the day building things I don't need to build, rebuilding things because the last time they were built it was with the wrong options, fixing build bugs where modifications didn't make it into the final binary etc etc etc. Makes me weep.

But seriously, Gentoo was the bomb. Your package doesn't impact anyone else until it's .ebuild is updated. You can precompile most units of the system once a day and download them as binaries. For 4 years of my life I didn't have to worry how things were being built, except for my own very small part that I had mastered. Bliss.

demallien··on The Man Who Saves You from Yourself (2013)
The deciding factor as to whether not something is a conspiracy theory delusion is not whether or not the mainstream media agrees. It's whether the conspiracy theory has any facts to support it. Deadly influenza viruses = lots of evidence = not a conspiracy. Reptilian illuminati = no -evidence = conspiracy. You may notice that this schema does not even reference the existence of MSM...
demallien··on The Man Who Saves You from Yourself (2013)
Yes, because we've never seen massive casualties as the result of a flu virus. Oh, wait...

Worrying about what influenza viruses are doing is not in any way shape or form similar to worrying about reptilian illuminati.

demallien··on Show HN: We put an iPhone on the front wheel of a car
Don't forget that an iPhone has sensors other than the CCD, so it knows when the camera is being twisted / translated around. You would need some depth perception to recover the image, but lucky you, that's exactly what you get if the camera is moving.
demallien··on Issues with Apple's iOS WebGL Implementation
You're not getting down voted for not following groupthink. You're getting doe voted because you're making a bunch of assertions of your opinion as though it's fact, without actually trying to justify those opinions.

On the substantive point, a couple of years ago I wrote a graphics framework. It used JavaScript core and directfb. I could have just told the app developers to use WebKit, but the performance just wasn't there. I'm pretty sure that's also the reason that apple, Google and Microsoft write native GUI sdks, and not to lock in developers.

demallien··on Netflix responds to Verizon
Nahhh, it was a non-story actually. The company making the new trains had actually gone out and measured the stations before designing the trains. They had then notified the entity responsible for the stations, letting them know that the stations would need to be reworked. Work has actually already started on some stations, but is running behind schedule and not all stations will be ready when the resins come on line. This entity has tried to blame their scheduling mismanagement on the train manufacturer, but as there are written agreements to do the work on the stations, that dig won't hunt.
