WASM is cool; I've started implemented a CPU that runs unmodified WASM in Verilog, but I'm finding the feature creep on the instruction set (SIMD, GC) to take away from the initial values behind WASM (simple, small)
deivid··on LoongArch64 Subjective Higlights
Nice article! Do you have a board to experiment on or is this all on QEMU? I've been wanting to try one of the Banana Pi boards, but I think it's going to be _quite_ painful
deivid··on Ask HN: Is anyone doing anything cool with tiny language models?
what model do you use for speech to text?
deivid··on Ask HN: Is anyone doing anything cool with tiny language models?
What was the model? What kind of performance did you get out of it?

Could you share a link to your project, if it is public?

deivid··on Ask HN: Is anyone doing anything cool with tiny language models?
I would be very interested if someone is aware of any small/tiny models to perform OCR, so the app can translate pictures as well
deivid··on Ask HN: Is anyone doing anything cool with tiny language models?
Not sure it qualifies, but I've started building an Android app that wraps bergamot[0] (the firefox translation models) to have on-device translation without reliance on google.

Bergamot is already used inside firefox, but I wanted translation also outside the browser.

deivid··on Intel's Tofino P4 Software Is Now Open Source
The APIs these vendors provide are a joke. A bunch of functionality can only be accessed via scripting interactive CLI commands. Some API endpoints cause short downtime / unexpected behavior (eg: by deleting the routing table and adding all entries back 1 by 1), while the on-device commands do not.

And guess what, the switch may decide to print informational or environmental messages interleaved with the command output, because the commands were meant to be run by a human. Good luck knowing if your state-altering command succeeded when you receive broken JSON.

I ended up regex-removing known environmental messages from command outputs..

deivid··on Intel's Tofino P4 Software Is Now Open Source
After having used & automated configuration of "traditional" switching/routing devices for years (Cisco , Arista, Juniper), I can't wait for P4 devices to take over
deivid··on Ask HN: Is maintaining a personal blog still worth it?
> Unless you're already established or willing to play the AI-SEO game, it feels impossible to build genuine readership for a technical blog in 2025.

I think it depends what you want to achieve -- I keep a blog without playing any engagement games and get ~500 visitors per day, which is much more than I'd have imagined.

Amazing, thanks!
deivid··on Why aren't we all serverless yet?
I understand the value of something like this for seasonal businesses / black friday / etc; but for normal companies, how likely is it to _suddenly_ blow up in traffic?

If you are lucky enough to have your company go viral and receive a sudden spike in traffic, will the rest of the infrastructure tolerate it? Will your database accept hundreds of concurrent connections, or will it tip over?

If you need to engineer and test the auto-scaling capabilities of the rest of your infrastructure, is there value in not needing to think about the scaling of your APIs?

These may sound snarky, but they are real questions -- I used to administer ~300k CPU cores, so I have some trouble imagining the use-cases for serverless

deivid··on Why aren't we all serverless yet?
IMO, the dev workflow is significantly worse, integration testing is harder and I don't see the value on "scale to zero", when the alternative is a $5/mo VPS.

deivid··on How is my Browser blocking RWX execution?
It seems well written to me, maybe you are not the target audience.
deivid··on Developing inside a virtual machine
Not sure what your host OS is, if Linux, QEMU can pass usb devices to the guest.

Otherwise you could pipe serial over TCP

Tried to use on mobile firefox, but seems to be doing something very CPU intensive, doesn't respond for ~10s then the tab crashes

I think it's significantly less than 50% -- Your comment made me think of The dictatorship of the small minority[0], which places the value at 3~4%

deivid··on Sipeed NanoKVM-PCIe
I've been thinking about this, using the tang mega FPGAs, but it's kinda hard as a software guy
deivid··on RISC-V HiFive Premier P550 Development Boards with Ubuntu Now Available
Thanks for this, I was looking to upgrade my VF2 but I'm not sure it's worth it at this stage, the VF2 is painfully slow, and this board doesn't reach 2x perf
deivid··on How to Reverse Engineer a 12 EUR Intel PCIe FPGA Card IBM 98Y2610
been looking for something like this, thanks!
deivid··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
LEDs with a low color rendering index (CRI) make everything look "flat" and even "fake". It's hard to describe.
deivid··on I Didn't Need Kubernetes, and You Probably Don't Either
This[0] is my take on something like that, but I'm no k8s expert -- the post documents my first contact with k8s and what/how I understood these concepts, from a sysadmin/SWE perspective.

deivid··on A common urban intersection in the Netherlands (2018)
In Amsterdam, you usually don't cycle more than ~3km for a "normal destination" (groceries, a generic bar or cafe, stores) and in general, ~7km is the limit for "specific destinations" (going to bar X, ), above that, usually people take transport, though there are some that often cycle >50km

At 3km, anything but the most extreme weather/elevation can be tolerated, I've seen people cycling in what is effectively tornado weather (orange alerts -> 100+ km/h gusts of wind). As distances get larger, the tolerance for these factors diminishes significantly, are you sure it's not the distances that are the problem?

deivid··on Getting Started with FPGAs
I started dabbling with FPGAs but having issues finding boards with open toolchains and high* speed peripherals (ethernet and/or PCIe), for now I'm using the Gowin boards with Yosys but they are not the best to get started

deivid··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (October 2024)
Amazing! I went through the same but opting to implement the console itself on the ESP32[0]. It ended up being a bit too much and it's mostly shelved now

Good luck!

deivid··on Busy Status Bar
Nice product, I built a similar (but less flexible) system for an "ON AIR" sign that I have in my home office, as both my wife and I WFH, it is nice to have a visual indicator when one of us joins a call.

Software for Linux and Mac is here [0]. There's also an ESP32 for the sign, but that part is trivial (MQTT -> LED)
