deisteve··on 'Our prosperity was based on China and Russia': EU foreign policy chief says
still relevant as little has changed
deisteve··on AI stole my job and my work, and the boss didn't know – or care
You are in Europe so you may not be aware of the situation in North America especially Canada and the government mandated surge of migrants from India and the tensions it has created.

> Neither are east european ones, Indonesian ones, or American ones for that matter. For the (unsubstantiated) claim that actual humans have been replaced.

The representation of Indonesian workers here is nil. Eastern European migrants are also unable to compete with the suppressed wages that Indian migrants can fill. It's an overwhelming motif playing out across all industries.

You can take a look at the scale of the exploitation of Indian migrant labour for reference:

Correct.
deisteve··on Show HN: Subreddit traffic tracker: Know the best time to post for subreddits
would be great to see one for HN and as I feel the like the same pattern holds

based on my A/B testing there seems to be a fluctuation in terms of what submissions are allowed

Usually during US working hours, the submissions are overwhelmingly to the left, yet ironically align with current conflicts that US backs.

Outside US working hours, its a more of a mixed bag but generally seems less biased. This is to be expected as most are English speakers in the West especially US.

For instance the same submission that made it through previously were just flagged because the person reading it didn't align politically.

I am still gathering data but seems like "free speech" doesn't exist on either platform rather "defined speech" by those that rank higher by the algorithm.

is that what you tell yourself? mine was aimed at the notion that salaried compensation especially if its very large implies an asymmetrical return for the company.

for one, it would buy loyalty. Not many Googlers stood up when they realized their technology was enabling military drone strikes on children.

I agree the human cost of producing pornography is too much for the individual

but thats exactly why people are drawn to it

there is something about seeing shame, humiliation and violence in pornography that makes people tick

a big reason why most people dont really care about onlyfans

and why 90s to early 2000s pornography is sought after

deisteve··on A web scraping CLI made for AI that is idempotent
Google that creates monopoly on top of the scraped data and uses third party content to do so?

LLM just places that ability at the ends of the user (local LLM strictly speaking)

deisteve··on AI stole my job and my work, and the boss didn't know – or care
in South Korea you are required to enter your civil identity number. it was invented during the 60s to counter north korean espionage. almost all korean websites require this 8 digit number to gain access to walled off gardens.

are you suggesting the same thing?

deisteve··on AI stole my job and my work, and the boss didn't know – or care
False. I can't get into details but testing is going to become the next copywriters.
deisteve··on AI stole my job and my work, and the boss didn't know – or care
Rest assured FE developers are no different than artists

the end product, the UI, is limited in terms of edge cases

the backend however, there is no limit. business logic, automation, all of these are endless edge cases.

if any FE engineers thinking they should switch to BE, its too late. There is large generation of those that have been using PHP since early 2000s, have seen everything under the sun, and their experience is irreplaceable

Rest assured BE engineers, your golden era is coming. The era without FE engineers hounding you for API parameters and QA rejecting your tickets for some UI bug.

Same thing for devops and cybersecurity. Your golden era is coming.

but what if you can't tell?

what if it was AI generated pornography?

deisteve··on AI stole my job and my work, and the boss didn't know – or care
I'm sorry I can't as I've signed an NDA

but if you think these new generation of AI tools are some innocent augmentative processes you are gravely mistaken. What you describe are the previous generation of AI tools which were using you as training. What you will see come out next year will be a truly reckoning force.

Not even Indians are safe.

deisteve··on Postmortem of my 9 year journey at Google
but the work that Googlers do most of HN can do

its the proximity, pedigree, profile that you have to fit to get in to Google

I'm happy for those that made it. Not everybody gets to work for Google. But the work they do are no less challenging or more important than what the rest of us do.

If anything FAANG has contributed greatly to the American Firewall of Algorithms and have destroyed an entire generation's ability to reason and value common sense.

I remember this quote which I can't remember who said but "if they are paying you a large salary, what they take from you is far greater"

deisteve··on X says it is closing operations in Brazil due to judge's content orders
Same. But I somehow doubt that Elon paid a premium of 1000% for Twitter for free speech.

Its more likely that after he scared away all the advertisers, him doubling down as "champion of free speech" was the only face saving act

If you think about it, paying $50 billion dollars and then within two years ending up with a company worth 95% less isn't very smart.

Sure Elon might be a centi-billionaire but a lot of it comes from Tesla which also is struggling.

For the little guys, his loss is a gain for us all. I especially love that he openly supports Trump

deisteve··on X says it is closing operations in Brazil due to judge's content orders
cynical part of m says X is doing this to reduce operating costs as revenue is down significantly rough 95% since Twitter went private and advertisers pulled out

X premium revenue has been disappointing. Elon paid $50 billion for a company worth less than 5 billion today and its ad revenue is dropping not increasing,

deisteve··on AI stole my job and my work, and the boss didn't know – or care
It's already the case, at a few companies I've involved with we've already laid off much of the content creation roles. The first to go were written content, then drawn content and now corporate stock photographers/videographers are next.

The second wave will involve 3d modelers, animators, post-processing jobs in cinema.

I'm already seeing lot of developer jobs especially front-end, testing roles being replaced entirely. Ironically, only back-end, devops, cybersecurity appears to be safe as it is mission critical even when good chunk of the jobs are automated.

what leads to my conclusion is that your comment will hold true for the most part, much as people stopped buying newspapers once Google News took off, there will still be those that pay digital subscriptions for media outlets they support, in fact their market shares might increase as a result of creative destruction.

There are riches to be made during these chaotic times. There are none for those seeking to be a miner-for-hire anymore in a large chunk of the white collar space.

deisteve··on AI stole my job and my work, and the boss didn't know – or care
I don't think is realistic because there is no way to verify the intent of someone who is validated as a human without reading their minds.

So this proposal of closed internet and heavily walled gardens doesn't really work and it just leads to more sophisticated and harder to detect means of scraping that data.

Think about it, if you have data that is so valuable that people are willing to put a paywall and throttle their usage at the expense of user experience, its most certainly going to be dumped in the public.

Also this fear of LLM stealing your content is unwarranted. It's no different than somebody running compression algorithms on content they scraped so that its more accessible for the masses.

From my readings and speaking with lawyers it appears the current copyright laws won't stand with LLMs because of the difficulty of reproducing the entire "compression" process which requires extreme amount of money to replicate.

This is OpenAI and many other's legal defence. That there won't be attempts to replicate the underlying mechanism to prove copyright contents were used in the process.

A carefully written prompt to replicate copyright work like with Suno can claim compensation pro delicto but to prove every piece of content will be difficult to claim LLM or token based attention networks are able to "steal" without building it from scratch, training it on millions of hours, especially if its closed and patented.

So we might see people claiming victory over cases like Suno but they've already lost the bigger battle over LLM's legal status.

deisteve··on A web scraping CLI made for AI that is idempotent
We don't live in the 90s anymore. The bandwidth CPU cost is moot unless you are spinning up thousands of GPUs to render an HTML page.

Also the claims of someone else's labor and profiteering is exactly what Google does

deisteve··on A web scraping CLI made for AI that is idempotent
i just don't get why people use web scraping as a battleground for moral ethics

its bizarre just like equating copyright infringement to theft of property.

where does this moral high ground come from? nobody scraping is thinking "oh im so evil im scraping without respecting robot.txt and using residential ip addresses to bypass detection"

Google does it nobody has a problem but when the little guy does it suddenly they are an outlaw.

deisteve··on The future of Deep Learning frameworks
if a paper releases code in PyTorch im not going to sit there and complain Jax is more efficient

its like fretting about how everything should be written in C++ instead of Python/Javascript

I don't care.

can i run pytorch code on jax?

if not im not interested. i'll keep using pytorch.

i hope this answer makes more sense for you.

deisteve··on The future of Deep Learning frameworks
i like pytorch because all the academia release their code with it

ive never even heard of jax nor will i have the skills to use it

i literally just want to know two things: 1) how much vram 2) how to run it on pytorch

deisteve··on FTC bans fake online reviews
i see. this means ecommerce websites need to link review to purchases or face penalties. if they can't prove it then they must take down those non linked reviews to avoid penalties.

this leads to the question can someone create massive amount of fake reviews on a competitor website

we'll have to see the penalties on Amazon if these new fatwas from FTC have any bite

im not sure if this is enforceable as most bots are outside US jursidction and would be impossible to gauge in some cases as they use residential proxies ex) Brightdata
