deft··on Conspiracy theories bypass people’s rationality
Rejection of all conspiracy theories and framing alternative-thinkers (can't think of a better word, but its the same as what's happened to naturopathy) as insane and stupid is intellectually limiting as well as technologically. The cathedral has decided heterodoxy must be squashed. Really sad.
deft··on People who jump to conclusions show other kinds of thinking errors
It's not even subtext. The media has been screaming at everyone to trust the experts and defer thinking.
deft··on Worldcoin
Implying it was ever any different. Some of the scams Sam Altman has been involved with are worse than this.
deft··on High schoolers are training to drive 18-wheelers amid shortage of truck drivers
How much do you make per year? I think 70k is underpaying for truck driving.
deft··on U.S. crude oil price tops $80 a barrel, the highest since 2014
So prices are rising rapidly but we're also facing really high inflation everywhere. I'm pretty naive when it comes to the oil boom/bust cycle, but taking in everything where are we now? I'm working in o&g and we're growing fast, I want to know how to maximize my ability to profit off what's going on if I can before inflation slashes any extra money I make.
deft··on Android phones are sending significant amount of user data with no opt-out [pdf]
There's an app available on f-droid called Aurora Store that lets you download apks from the Play Store directly, avoiding the need for stuff like APKMirror (where you don't know where or what happens to the apk you're downloading). On desktop you can use the program Raccoon for the same.
deft··on Medical Ethicist at UC Irvine on leave for challenging vaccine mandate
Is this cognitive dissonance or can there be real disagreement between "experts"? Just a few weeks ago ACLU said it was unethical and freedom restricting to not get the vaccine. Who do I listen to?
deft··on Whistleblower to Congress: Facebook products harm kids and democracy
It is about censorship. The Biden admin has repeatedly made it obvious they don't think FB etc are deleting enough and the feds will have to step in soon.
deft··on Why obsessively following successful people online is dangerous
>Just support your friend >JUST

well, he is supporting him. Wondering what's going on mentally is part of that. I don't understand why this is even posed as a solution.

deft··on How to rapidly improve at any programming language (2016)
Broken env vars had me frustrated for a few days. I've found finding the right docs in elixir to be difficult because they tend to be fairly terse and assume you know where to put things in your application, if that makes sense. They give you the function call but not explain how to parse its results.
deft··on Why doesn’t natural immunity count in the US?
you're deferring thinking to an unnamed mystery expert and then arguing on behalf of that unnamed mystery expert as if you know what they'd say. lol, just lol.
deft··on How percentile approximation works and why it's more useful than averages
Looks like timescale did a big marketing push this morning only for their whole service to go down minutes later. lol.
deft··on Why Monero
This line of questioning is pretty silly. Of course your pet cause needs to be solved through legislation immediately.
deft··on Disinformation-for-hire in Kenya
Mozilla is wasting its limited funding fighting random individual boogeyman rather than develop software that helps protect our freedoms. It's really sad.
deft··on Many of the clothes we donate to charity end up dumped in landfill
These kinds of donation initiatives drive me mad. If they didn't exist, I'd throw these clothes my partner insists on donating in the trash. Why would I send garbage to someone else as a donation??! The fact the donation receivers just ship them to a foreign landill proves my point. I'll keep it local :).
deft··on End of the line for Uber?
Uber the company has higher operating costs, and their service isn't better. The entire value proposition is "cheaper" and always has been.
deft··on NYC to mandate proof of vaccination for many indoor settings
This is one of the strangest comments here, but you're trying to be rational while breaking down the vast majority of the worldwide population into one of 3 positions? You know most places don't have these mandates and never will? And things will be fine.
deft··on Technical blogging in the era of Stack Overflow
Nice to see this written out, I've came to the same conclusion just based on the things I read.
deft··on Don’t Apologize: If the mob comes for you, stand up for yourself
The shtick that cancel culture and "the twitter mob" don't even exist is falling apart, because insisting there is no war in ba sing se only works until a critical mass sees the evidence for themselves. Your argument is ridiculous and I'm sure you realize this.

Again, I'm sure you know this already, but most people who are cancelled are innocent of any wrongdoing, and very few involve racism. Did you read the article? No one was accused of racism, yet the mob came for them.

deft··on What it's like to be cancelled
Noah you are saying this now but your original apology says the opposite. Which is it?
deft··on What it's like to be cancelled
My impression is he made himself sound worse than he really was.
deft··on What it's like to be cancelled
You can find his original apology here. https://www.hipstersofthecoast.com/2020/06/noah-bradley-admi...

Maybe if he wasn't so self-loathing in it the consequences wouldn't have been as extreme. When the mob comes for you its best to just ignore it rather than give in to their demands. He called himself a sexual predator, what kind of impression does that give?

A sidenote, this happened at the same time as the Smash bros community was experiencing a "metoo"-ish moment, and it dragged a lot of nerdy hobbies into the mix. Many innocent people were cancelled last June, and not all of them managed to get out from the hole like Noah sadly.

deft··on Utopia, a visual design tool for React, with code as the source of truth
This is cool, the UI and preview reminds me of BB10's IDE for qml... Still miss those days and I still don't understand why we don't have qml for the web.
deft··on Ask HN: Would Spreadsheets with Lisps be much more powerful?
Yes. People who know how to program in matlab and python, but also have to manually open up excel / csv files need this. Loading up excel is slow, writing a python script where you have to search the docs to find the functions you want is slow too. A programmable and fast spreadsheet is needed.
deft··on Ethereum community has solved a major problem of the Internet: Single Sign-On
No, the ENS domain is simply an additional layer of rent-seeking. Metamask sign-on is great. ENS is a pointless cash grab.
deft··on Ethereum community has solved a major problem of the Internet: Single Sign-On
This has already been solved, its called Public-key cryptography. Ethereum gave everyone a key, but usability issues have stifled making that useful offchain. ENS isn't needed.
deft··on Fewer young men are in the labor force, more are living at home
Pretty much. The economists created this mess using their magic number science, then look down at the broken scramble and are confused? Assuming rational actors...
deft··on Fewer young men are in the labor force, more are living at home
Cool, why should they be doing otherwise? Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out.
deft··on Twitch will ban users for 'severe misconduct' that occurs away from its site
Interesting, but this policy already exists. Nairo a top 10 Smash Bros competitor was banned after false accusations of pedophilia months ago. He remains banned to this day.
deft··on Et Tu, Signal?
HN missed out on this shitcoin, that's where the salt comes from.
