defphysics··on ChatGPT Health
There’s a lot of negativity here. I’ll just say I’m extremely glad I had ChatGPT when I was going through some health issues last year.
defphysics··on The Soul of an Old Machine: Revisiting the Timeless von Neumann Architecture
I see this in wikipedia:

"The attribution of the invention of the architecture to von Neumann is controversial, not least because Eckert and Mauchly had done a lot of the required design work and claim to have had the idea for stored programs long before discussing the ideas with von Neumann and Herman Goldstine[3]"

defphysics··on Alcohol without the hangover – scientists are finding ways
My favorite is Run Wild from Athletic Brewing Co.
defphysics··on Is technical analysis just stock market astrology?
Novice: "technical analysis is legit!"

Intermediate: "technical analysis is total BS!"

Pro: "technical analysis is legit."

defphysics··on An Introduction to Statistical Learning with Applications in Python
Personally, I prefer Bishop (Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning) or Murphy (Probabilistic Machine Learning: An Introduction).
defphysics··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
The version of the quote I've heard (and which sounds better to me) is this:

"Sometimes someone confesses a sin in order to take credit for it." -John von Neumann

defphysics··on As unions decline, inequality rises
> see themselves as embarrassed millionaires

I see this "embarrassed millionaires" line a lot. It seems unbelievably cynical. Do you really think a meaningful fraction of workers are thinking "I'll oppose unions because even though I'm hurting workers, it'll be good for me when I'm rich"?

defphysics··on 8-Part Film Adaptation of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina Is Free Online
Maybe try audio. I really like the version narrated by David Horovich.
defphysics··on Ask HN: The book that did it for you in math and/or CS?
The book that did this for me:

The Elements of Computing Systems: Building a Modern Computer from First Principles (Nisan and Schocken)

https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Computing-Systems-second-Pri...

defphysics··on The Price of Discipline
No it doesn't. I listened to the audiobook and agree it has very good lessons. One of the big ones has to do with empathy. I wish I'd had a book like this when I was a kid.
defphysics··on Schopenhauer: On Reading and Books
One of my favorites:

(The Wisdom of Life and Counsels and Maxims)

defphysics··on A SpaceX booster now trails only 4 space shuttles in flight experience
Actually, what you're describing sounds like something you'd refer to as "not a showstopper". To me, a "showstopper" is something that stops the show: that can't be ignored or "fixed later".
