Leaving this here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decree_770 as someone who lived through that.

Also check out this film https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4_Months,_3_Weeks_and_2_Days about the reality on the ground.

Congratulations, America! Lots of states will now offer the same reproductive rights as communist Romania during the Cold War. So much freedom!

Also, some US states will now have a stricter abortion law than even some fundamentalist islamic countries. What a great day for American liberty.

decebalus1··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
> Is it minority views? Surely, when it comes down to states legislating this, people can make their opinion heard at the ballet box

How about instead of deferring this to states rights, we defer directly to individual rights and let individual people decide what to do? You know.. like in some sort of 'free' country.

decebalus1··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
The government doesn't believe that life starts at conception. Otherwise you'd be able to get tax deductions for an unborn fetus. This has nothing to do with when life begins. This has everything to do with population control and with religious fundamentalism.
decebalus1··on ‘Anti-hunger’ molecule forms after exercise, scientists discover
Sample size of one, but I always lift weights fasted (12-16 hours fast) and I'm ready to eat a horse about an hour or two after my workout. I once ate a whole rotisserie chicken. I also crave burgers right after strenuous hikes or long bike rides. Perhaps I'm just badly configured.

A lot more nuanced than that. It includes what you're saying, of course. But it also adds misclassification of employees as contractors, illegal deductions, not granting or paying time off that is agreed upon, manipulating work hour tracking, refusing to grant agreed upon benefits, management/owners participating in tip pooling, etc.. It does ultimately lead to losses on the part of the employee, but comparing 'wage theft' with not paying rent is not just a bad faith argument, it's actually an uninformed ignorant argument.
decebalus1··on A subreddit dedicated to busting shoplifters
I don't think 'wage theft' means what you think it means.
decebalus1··on A subreddit dedicated to busting shoplifters
> It's really interesting to me at how sensitive Americans (in particular) seem to be when it comes to property damage or theft while being completely uncaring

We like 'stuff' in general and we love our 'stuff' in particular. Property is very big around here.

Also, not to excuse shoplifters but wage theft is a way WAY bigger issue in America than petty theft. But it gets less visibility, it's less visible in general, doesn't make for good TV, doesn't have that 'dystopian I need to buy more ammo' vibe and it can't really be used as a political wedge issue. We made this!

Also, to add the the general thread, I couldn't give two shits about this. We have a heavily militarized police force that looks like it's about to invade a foreign country and people still shoplift. A bunch of rent-a-cops are surely going to drive the shoplifter numbers down, right? It's almost as if the whole stealing thing happens for a different reason..

decebalus1··on A religious sect landed Google in a lawsuit
The comment section is muddying the waters by gathering all sorts of organizations or company cultures (OMG working at Facebook is a cuLT) or cliques under the 'cult' umbrella. I believe the comment is very valuable and should be at the top so that HNers who don't read the articles don't get the wrong impression about what this is about.

I don't understand your point. The USA was just meant to be a couple of colonies, then an association boycotting British imports but look at us now. It's scandalous!

I may be biased as personally I would love to see the United States of Europe in my lifetime.. probably the only way for Europe to maintain some sort of geopolitical power in the future.

decebalus1··on Cuba about to adopt the most progressive family law in the world
I mean technically you can choose to be a `Trotskyist-zionist-titoist-bourgeois-nationalist` traitor or any other flavor of traitor, but you can't really choose who you're attracted to.
decebalus1··on Cuba about to adopt the most progressive family law in the world
> abysmal record of gay rights in communist systems

I think things are more nuanced (and interesting) than that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communism_and_LGBT_rights

For example:

> In 1962, the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic decriminalized same-sex sexual intercourse after scientific research from Kurt Freund led to the conclusion that homosexual orientation cannot be changed.

Meanwhile, in USA:

> In 1962 Illinois adopted the recommendations of the Model Penal Code and thus became the first state to remove criminal penalties for consensual sodomy from its criminal code,[7] almost a decade before any other state.

There is an abysmal record of gay rights across all parts of the political spectrum, including using sexual orientation as a political tool of oppression. There's nothing special about communism.

decebalus1··on Cuba about to adopt the most progressive family law in the world
There are only 31 countries in the world that respect marriage equality. The fact that Cuba is going to be 32, in front of half of continental Europe is a good thing for Cuba.

> This is the same communist party that put gay people in concentration camps in the 1960s.

There are still parents in the USA who are currently sending their kids to gay conversion camps. I don't understand your point.

His election results were so good, they were downright Putinesque. Not a lot of comments on hackernews made me laugh as intensively as yours.

decebalus1··on High cost of cancer care in the U.S. doesn’t reduce mortality rates
Not to defend anything about the American model (I personally hate it and think it's broken) but the annual checkup is a very cheap way of dealing with a possibly expensive condition.

The checkup is non-intrusive and for presumably healthy people consists of a physical, basic blood tests (glucose and some metabolic indicators + infection markers) and a blood pressure check. As an example, it's way cheaper to find out you have pre-diabetes this way, than to go to the doctor with symptoms when you have full on diabetes. This is mainly the reason why insurances pay for these in full, as they're part of 'preventive care'.

> How much more would it cost our health-care system, if everyone took advantage of

Annual checkups are definitely not the reason healthcare costs are sky-high in the US.

decebalus1··on GoodWill ransomware forces victims to donate to the poor
I don't understand your point. Do you think poverty is something far away in 3rd world countries only? Your point is probably moot in countries with strong social welfare systems, but the USA for example has 16% of its children living in poverty. I live in a VERY well-off area in the USA, yet one of the local food banks I'm somewhat connected is frequented by a lot of families with children. Non-perishable food + kids clothing + school supplies are one of the most sought-after donation items.
decebalus1··on Interview with a Russian Tanker (Russian)
I don't think we'll know exactly until after the war ends (and hopefully the russians are pushed back to the '91 borders). There is a huge disparity indeed, but not all of them are concentrated in the areas of conflict right now (I bet a large chunk of them are still in western Ukraine) and the russians were indeed able to target and destroy a couple of weapons transports, so who knows how many of them never even made it to the Ukrainian armed forces.

decebalus1··on Tell HN: Recruiters are lying about remote positions
Haha you'd be surprised of the amount of Google cargo-culting happening in the industry. Lots of companies have 'hiring committees' now.
decebalus1··on Do Russians tell the truth when they say they support the war in Ukraine?
Who gives a shit, honestly? It's not like they can do anything about it:

- Democracy was never really a thing for Russians

- Even if it was a thing, there is no viable opposition, as trying to run against Putin comes with all sorts of benefits, like prison time, polonium or bullets in the head

- Putin's thugs are so deeply entrenched (and well paid) it's impossible to even protest

So all-in-all, 'the Russians' can say or do whatever, it's not like it matters.

decebalus1··on US fighting Russia 'to the last Ukrainian': veteran US diplomat – The Grayzone
Any independent sources to verify anything you posted? Also, this doesn't answer my original question for the other troll.

Let's not forget that all of this, the reason people are talking about this in the first place, is the fact that Russian armed forces are currently occupying the land of a foreign sovereign nation. We seem to forget all of that and people get into arguments about which color armband or whether or not something is a manipulated pixel. Russians need to fuck right off from there, end of story.

Everything else, including the unverified garbage you keep posting repeatedly, is part of https://www.rand.org/pubs/perspectives/PE198.html

decebalus1··on Bucha Killings in Ukraine Lead Germany, France to Expel Russian Diplomats
What's actually happening is ethnic Russians in Ukraine getting a taste of non-Putin flavored government which would spill over into Russia. The battle here is not over some land or some resources. Putin does not want the example of an EU Ukraine to serve as a goal for his own people. An orange revolution in Moscow is what's keeping the geriatric clown up at night. This is what it wants removed. This is the actual translation of 'Ukrainian nationalism threatening Russia'. A free, prosperous, democratic Ukraine would inspire Russians to want the same thing at home. Just look at what the Russian soldiers are looting. It's very similar to some backwards iron curtain peasants suddenly ending up in Paris.

I mean a source that's different from 'some Russian government asshole on Telegram' picked up by Tass. Some independent source I mean.
