Yes, agreed.
debo_··on U.S. economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, a sudden reversal
Meanwhile, Canada adds 75k jobs in the same month.

> Gains were focused on the private sector, with strength in wholesale and retail trade, finance and insurance, and professional and scientific services. Public sector jobs fell by 14,500 amid an official bid to cut government spending.

It seems like a non issue to me.
debo_··on Clinical failure rates over the decades: yikes
There's an alternative that is slowly emerging. Many clinical trials "fail" but the drug candidate in question works really well for identifiable subsets of the participants. Right now pharma companies won't bother pursuing those drugs because they can't market it broadly. But it's still possible these drugs could help people in the future.

debo_··on Fired by Google for creating the Google workspace CLI
I was there in 2005 and we were basically told point-blank that we couldn't open source _anything_ without running it by a manager first. This was at a time where all engineers were basically housed in the main 4 buildings on the north campus, so not yet all that big. Not sure what grace they fell from, but I found it to be a nauseating sanctimonious place even then.

debo_··on How Alberta Eradicated Rats
Alberta has shown us that proper policy incentives can drive meaningful change. Instead of leaving rats to languish in cellars, they created incentives for them to do meaningful work in the provincial government instead.
debo_··on Wages in America Are Too Low for the 30% Rule to Work for Renters Anymore
It also depends on how hot the housing market is at any given time. Often time a realtor is just someone who decided everything else was too much work. (My whole family has been in the business for almost 70 years, both commercial and residential.)
debo_··on The (real) dead economy theory
Whenever I read Cory Doctorow, I feel like someone took the complement of Paul Graham's writing and posted it. I personally find both of them vapid and annoying.

Edit: the article that the author is commenting on is IMO much better than the linked commentary. There's not much to it

debo_··on Google Chrome update will close the door on ad blockers
I wonder what degoogled chromium will do. I think it's perfectly reasonable for them to drop MV2 support given all the other stuff they're doing, but it would be nice if I could continue to use full uBlock with it.
