deathgrips··on Zoom to bring end-to-end encryption to all users, including non-paying
I measure values by how much you are willing to give up. How much of a pain in the ass will you endure to get privacy? How much will you sacrifice to lessen your carbon footprint? Will you march in the streets and get tear gassed in order to protest for your social activist movement? Anyone can say they believe in anything. It's your actions that have an impact.

I don't think people become more virtuous by saying a few words and doing nothing. If you say you care about the environment but do absolutely nothing about it, you don't care in any way that matters. It's just a social signal without any impact on the world. Buying a Tor sticker doesn't promote privacy. Buying and running a Tor node does.

I measure virtue by how much you are willing to lose for the sake of your values or because you want to help other people. If you aren't willing to give up anything, you're not virtuous no matter what you say. Actions matter.

If you say you care about privacy but do nothing to protect your privacy, you don't really care about privacy in any way that matters. Since you mildly inconvenience yourself for the sake of privacy, I can conclude based on this very limited evidence that you mildly care about privacy, which is a whole lot more than most people care about it.

Apple markets itself as privacy conscious because that makes Apple look like a trustworthy company. That's a rare and beneficial appearance that a company can maintain to get more business.

Not all gay people care about their privacy. Plenty live in states where they feel more free to open up to their friends, family, and neighbors.

They are the 1%. 99% of people consider "privacy" a good value in abstract but will not lift a finger to protect their own privacy. It's virtue signalling.

This is one of the downsides of the casual acceptance of corporate invasion of our privacy. Corporations can do whatever they want! Including letting China listen to your doctor appointments.

99% of people do not care about privacy. They won't switch programs because a nation state might spy on them.
deathgrips··on Operating a Tor Relay
If you feel like people use technology for despicable purposes, wouldn't you also think that bad governments would do even worse things if Tor did not exist?
deathgrips··on Operating a Tor Relay
Depends on what you think is despicable. That's the problem with setting limits on freedom.
deathgrips··on Harvard University Won’t Require SAT, ACT for Admissions Next Year
I know a girl who goes to caltech. She says that they don't require you to take a compilers class to get a computer science degree. Sounds like a joke.
deathgrips··on Harvard University Won’t Require SAT, ACT for Admissions Next Year
Thanks, I'm glad I took it.
deathgrips··on Hacker Dosed with LSD While Restoring Historical Synth (2019)
Some of the OG psychologists working with LSD wanted to mail samples to world leaders so they would achieve world peace.

Harvard is selective and exclusionary but it doesn't need to select the objectively best people, it just has to select people that are "good enough". Most of the value of an undergrad degree at Harvard comes from networking rather than the education itself. It's a club.
deathgrips··on Ask HN: What book would you recommend to your younger self?
Maps of Meaning by Jordan Peterson. I've gone through several core belief changes in my life (religious, philosophical, interpersonal) and the book would have helped me understand what I was going through.

This is bordering on the absurd. Almost all police officers go through their career without being in objective danger of dying. If they do run in to danger, they call for backup and are trained to handle it. You can find examples of death in any profession. Like it or not, policing is not one of the most dangerous jobs out there, it's just filled with scared people.

You don't think police instigated violence when they killed Rodney King?
deathgrips··on George Floyd Protest – police brutality videos on Twitter
That's not what I saw on livestreams.

We can take grenade launchers away from the cops.

Great idea.

Very clever, but given the benefit of history I disagree with the first line. Weakness invites trouble, but strength is not the solution to every problem.

No, 100k deaths is warfare. If you know how bad things can get in other countries you're more likely to try and cut this shit out in America before it gets that bad. Please don't take pride in accepting oppression meekly.
deathgrips··on George Floyd Protest – police brutality videos on Twitter
Correct, but I can take away your toys.

The police make a mockery of the law because they get away with murder. Protesters want reasonable laws enforced for everyone regardless of race or profession.

In the UK if police need guns on scene, they clear the area and call a specialized sharpshooter team.

Pizza delivery drivers have to deliver over 10 million pizzas a year. Any one of those deliveries could be cut short by a drunk driver that causes a head-on collision at 60 miles per hour. They don't have the luxury of foresight of knowing if they're coming home today or not. They know they're at risk. Contrast that with your average cop issuing citations and filling out paperwork and I'd say their job is incredibly fucking dangerous.

>Software engineers who sit on their computers all day and try to backseat drive on these issues should probably be dragged into the streets and set on fire.

Congratulations, I think you're qualified to be a cop.

deathgrips··on George Floyd Protest – police brutality videos on Twitter
We have already had more democracy and community input. It does nothing and gets ignored. The cops keep defending other cops from all accountability.
deathgrips··on George Floyd Protest – police brutality videos on Twitter
Don't dish out what you can't take. I've never seen an example of riots breaking out in a city before police instigate violence with rubber bullets and tear gas.

Also, if he can't keep his cool under those conditions, he has an obligation to change jobs because if he can't handle it he's just putting other people in danger.

deathgrips··on George Floyd Protest – police brutality videos on Twitter
Statistics are useless because almost all police misconduct goes unreported. Police departments are designed to make oversight impossible.

You're comparing protesting to open warfare.

Oh my bad, I mistook that for Edward Snowden.
