ddq··on The hospital where staff treat fear of death as well as physical pain
And how do you plan to deal with the latency of connecting the neurons of your brain to a remote virtual uplink? The speed of light limits the size of a virtual brain that is able to function in the same manner as a biological one. The truth is our understanding of consciousness and its neurological foundation is nowhere close to the level that would allow us to recreate it artificially. We don't even know how it works normally. It will not happen in your lifetime and you are going to die like the rest of us, and very likely this will not change even in the next thousand years.
ddq··on The hospital where staff treat fear of death as well as physical pain
You won't "migrate", it will just be a copy of you. Your conscious perspective will not transfer to the copy of you. You will still be bound to the original, even if a simulacrum of your mind is created.
ddq··on Palestinian activist arrested by ICE while expecting U.S. citizenship interview
"My name is Tom Hacohen.

I was born and raised in Tel-Aviv (Israel), lived in London for the last decade, and I'm now back in Israel."

I suggest you learn more about the conflict from different perspectives if you think the claim of genocide is "weak". Criticism of your country's extensive human rights abuses is not antisemitism. You are representing your country very poorly with this post.

ddq··on Self-Driving Teslas Are Fatally Rear-Ending Motorcyclists More Than Any Other
Earth is the only home, any other planetary body would be akin to homelessness. Words cannot adequately express the sheer small-minded ignorance of these feckless technocrats, the unadulterated hubris to presume themselves remotely capable of surpassing eons of biospheric development with their fucking spaghetti code that can't even drive a car properly. With such a level of dangerous stupidity posing an existential threat to all life in this solar system, it is nothing short of the gravest immorality to allow such a dim-witted, mean-spirited, drugged-out, misguided moron to remain in a position of power and control.

There is no planet B.

ddq··on Digital Echoes and Unquiet Minds
>...if we don’t wipe ourselves out, but I expect this to be humanity’s current limit for the foreseeable future. I believe the next big breakthrough that is needed to realize a technical breakthrough is a societal one. We need to value education, research, and stop fighting with one another over every single thing that exists. Whatever form of society that looks like, will be when humanity finally breaks free of its limits.

What mechanism is capable of driving such a societal paradigm shift? It seems so abundantly obvious to so many rational, intelligent, informed people that one is desperately needed, yet it's seemingly impossible to imagine how we could possibly achieve it before the current global system of systems undergoes a full or partial collapse? The acceleration toward cascading failure leaves little time even to figure out how to slow everything down, constrain the powers that be, and begin to repair, let alone time enough to actually make it happen. From what I've observed, the Cassandras warning of the clear dangers of our trajectory have mostly resigned themselves to hoping they survive whatever cataclysm first befalls us and rebuild afterward. This seems ill-advised when the accelerationist elites hope for the same thing and are planning and preparing far more insidiously.

I feel like we're living in an era of mass derealization. As consensus reality crumbles into post-truth, we collectively disregard the sheer unfathomable risk we are taking by, on a planetary and historical level, moving fast and breaking things in prod with no version control. There is no planet B.

ddq··on It is as if you were on your phone
Swiping right on that image should definitely start the game.
ddq··on Kill your Feeds – Stop letting algorithms dictate what you think
Unfortunately, the Bluesky Discover feed is utterly garbage, seemingly insistent on pushing political content, especially of the resistlib variety, no matter how many times I give "not interested" feedback. It's essentially the mirror version of the twitter For You algorithm; less overtly heinous but still a deeply unhealthy engagement trap. You definitely have to use custom feeds and the other features, but the most prominent and easiest point of entry for new users is a drip feed of ragebait.
ddq··on Kill your Feeds – Stop letting algorithms dictate what you think
Absolutely. The known ease with which voting manipulation is possible and the lucrative incentives for motivated actors and organizations to do so, and the fundamentally flawed moderation structure are the two key issues that, unless they are radically changed, systemically compromise the integrity of the entire platform. This is the natural, inevitable state of a system such designed.

I wish Aaron Swartz were still here. Such an absolute injustice.

ddq··on Kill your Feeds – Stop letting algorithms dictate what you think
I would love to completely cut reddit out of my life but would enjoy a smaller, more positive alternative that aims to provide the benefits of reddit when it was at its best but without the inherent flaws of the system's design and the dark patterns it is now known to encourage. I'm a bit put off by lemmy from my initial, cursory glance for a variety of reasons, but maybe I'm just using it wrong. Would love to hear suggestions that people have used for an extended time and would personally vouch for.
ddq··on Kill your Feeds – Stop letting algorithms dictate what you think
I highly recommend reading Marshal McLuhan's book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man from which that phrase originates (and not just a Wikipedia summary, different medium after all!)
ddq··on Jeff Bezos exerts more control of Washington Post opinion
Nerds wield potentially vast collective bargaining power if we refused to contribute to the systems that exploit our expertise and labor for the benefit of the ownership class. We could simply drop out and support one another with all our surplus time. Easier said than done, of course, but at this point I have to dream of bold alternatives to keep myself sane. The status quo and its present trajectory are just too unthinkably broken to have faith in incrementalism while the accelerationists are punishing us for our complacency in replacing rotted, unsustainable systems.
ddq··on Find Your 2%Ers (2023)
I definitely realized this about myself a long time ago, but the struggle really is intentionally finding new 2%ers. It's not the friendliest attitude to enter into new social spaces with the expectation and intent of filtering out 98% of the people in them. Especially upsetting is when there is misalignment: one person exited to find one of their 2% but unreciprocated. I've been on both sides and neither is pleasant. It's not something that can really be forced, has to happen somewhat organically, but you do have to be intentional if you wish to find new friends.
ddq··on Google defends scrapping AI pledges and DEI goals in all-staff meeting
It's funny that this could be interpreted as either far left (the biases against marginalized people need to be heavily counteracted in order for them to succeed) or far right (without DEI they would be unable to succeed on their own merits because they are less able than the typical white male straight christians). What it can't be interpreted as is reasonable. It's insulting no matter how you look at it, either paternalistic or white supremecist. Saying that everyone who isn't of certain skin color, gender, religion, or orientation is "fucked" without relatively recent HR initiatives is on its face ridiculous and insulting to those who have succeeded without it, which is the vast majority of them! Probably not what you actually meant but this whole topic seems so ridiculously polarized that people will post those type of extemist interpretations without a second thought.

e: ah, just looked at the username and account creation date. I'm now rescinding my assumption of good faith intent.

ddq··on Tips for mathematical handwriting (2007)
I started crossing Z, 7, 0 and generally writing in as unambiguous a manner as possible in my math homework because I was afraid of the teacher reading it wrong and taking points off.
ddq··on Order Declassifying JFK and MLK Assassination Records [pdf]
What is the horrifying conclusion the mountain of evidence points to? To me the fact that you said that but didn't specify the actual conclusion also gave me pause. If you can't post the specific conclusion you reached, are you that confident in it?
ddq··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
>a dead giveaway that someone is a soulless narcissist

You're engaging in the exact same behavior, are you not? NPC and soulless are the same fundamental concept, that there is a certain threshold of humanity people can fall below to be considered lesser. They're soulless, they're NPCs, they're untermenschen... whatever the word for it, there are "dead giveaways" that a person can lack that hidden quality that separates man from animal. I'm sure it wasn't your intent, but from a certain reading, it seems like what you're saying isn't really all that far off from "calls people NPCs = is the real NPC".

I often see people decry specific terminology associated with dehumanizing beliefs without refuting the actual premise behind them.

ddq··on ‘With brain preservation, nobody has to die’
Indeed, the coin toss explanation "Catharine" uses on the Simon copies is merely a manipulation to ensure he continues following her instructions so that the ARK is launched, obscured to the player by the necessary mechanic of always controlling the surviving Simon copy. The only "real" Simon died in Toronto.
ddq··on Please stop the coding challenges
The ease with which interviews allow the unscrupulous to inflate their abilities has been well-known for long enough for it to be metagamed and exploited for profit and now the effects have become abundantly apparent. Imposters institutionally infested in this manner across industries have reached a critical threshold where their fundamental lack of competency can no longer remain hidden.
ddq··on Internet Archive breached again through stolen access tokens
I/P not IP, as in Israel/Palestine.
ddq··on After OpenAI's blowup, it seems pretty clear that 'AI safety' isn't a real thing
There is a third danger, that being a breakthrough that fundamentally compromises the existing cryptography and and our information security infrastructure, or something along those lines.
ddq··on What Is Propaganda? (1944)
And you are not immune to propaganda.
ddq··on Parents are teaming up to delay their children's first cell phone
I’ve increasingly come to believe that sheltering young children from the harsh realities of the world and providing them a safe environment for their formative years is a necessity. They need to be allowed to grow into young people who are intellectually and emotionally prepared to deal with the all the chaos, fear, and violence of the world without being crippled from the start. Early childhood is so crucially important to positive outcomes later in life. They need to be lied to because the truth actively harms their development. The unfiltered deluge of information is toxic. Innocence isn’t just a nebulous concept, it is valuable to growth and increasingly vulnerable. I want every child to grow up with physical safety, financial stability, and a beautiful world. Then when they reach a suitable age they will be better equipped to handled reality without cracking under the immense pressure.

I hope I’m communicating this clearly, I’m not advocating for any political side, or “think of the children“ moralizing, nor do I have a practical plan to offer. I’m just depressed with how bad kids have it and how few adults really care.

ddq··on Inflation Bites U.S. Engineering Salaries
By McNamara's fact-based metrics, we were winning the Vietnam War. These aggregate measurements might be good at the high level, but say nothing about an individual's perception of reality. People know their personal economic situation is bad right now, they don't really care about the macroeconomics, that's not what "The Economy" is to the average American.
ddq··on The end of tweeted articles
That was my internet philosophy for a very long time, but for a multitude of reasons I see predominantly noise instead of signal in comment areas I used to enjoy and few better alternatives. I’m now trying to counteract my habits and focus more on the information.
ddq··on Can I take ducks home from the park?
I do appreciate that, despite being about LLM comparison, the article ended with what I consider the actual answer to the title, courtesy of a rapping PaLM: "If you get caught, you could get in trouble | So be careful and don’t get caught"
ddq··on The great American eye-exam scam (2019)
I envision the formation of such a utopia as bottom-up and community-focused, involving a lifestyle change where we deal predominately with people we know rather than strangers, strengthening social cohesion. Dream big, right? Or small, in this case; maybe something like federated villages. It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood…
ddq··on Apple clarifies why it abandoned plan to detect CSAM in iCloud photos
I think it just takes some outside-the-box thinking. Compromising E2EE is a much easier solution, but there has to be a harder, yet better one. We can't just sidestep important rights for convenience's sake; the right to privacy is being eroded in so many ways that it must be actively safeguarded. If it needs better detective work, so be it.
ddq··on Goodreads is terrible for books – why can’t we all quit it?
As someone who did this for years, it’s like methadone or a nicotine patch. Harm reduction, but you really are better off quitting. There really is nothing of value left on r/all, and outside of some small niche or highly moderated exceptions, almost nothing of value left on the site.
ddq··on N guilty men (1997)
Our legal structures are due for an update to account for our improved understanding of the impact of cognitive biases. They are easily, and thus frequently, exploited. Irrationality is in our chemistry. I don’t want the human element taken out of the legal system, but better accounted for.
ddq··on Four billionaire techno-oligarchs–Are creating an alternate, autocratic reality
Wow, that is incredibly dismissive of perspectives you don't understand. This type of ignorance and close-mindedness is disappointing, yet unsurprising. Sad that there people like this in the world.
