dclusin··on Neeva: Ad-free, subscription-based search engine launches
Back during the heyday of land lines, phone book optimization was naming your company AAA <service> because phone books were sorted alphabetically.
dclusin··on Divisive Covid ‘lab leak’ debate prompts dire warnings from researchers
Yes because discussions about safety protocols at laboratories like these aren't worth having or trying to improve.
dclusin··on Apple asks staff to return to office 3 days a week starting in early September
Eventually someone has to do the lowly business of actually implementing the value that those 10x ninja fullstack super senior software architects just created. God bless the drones.
dclusin··on Cox Hotspots with Panoramic Wifi
It depends on the implementation details. Comcasts implementation had a separate wifi chip that was separate from the customer wifi network for its network. I remember reading some years ago some hackers managed to spoof its Mac Address to double their bandwidth with interface bonding...

Found one: https://msol.io/blog/tech/how-i-doubled-my-internet-speed-wi...

dclusin··on Request for comments regarding topics to be discussed at Dark Patterns workshop
Agreed, sorry for editing after you replied.

While I agree this is a regrettable practice, the social media sites in question do the same thing too. The argument that Facebook is acting in users best interest by preventing websites from spamming users to use an app is incredibly self serving and not really all that believable.

I too wish it would go away, but both sites not having equal access the users in a similar way is anti competitive imo. Especially for businesses who increasingly need to participate on these platforms due to the fact that so many of their customers use their services.

I think the biggest dark pattern is social platforms holding the browser hostage instead of opening content in the users native browser app. Social media sites are built on user generated content. By keeping users in the app like this it puts the website at an inherent disadvantage and prevents them from providing a compelling first class experience that might compete with facebook for attention, due to their inherent parent child ui design.

Anti trust regulators came after Microsoft for deep bundling of functionality of browser and OS and I think they should do the same for facebook, google, reddit, etc. for the web view.

dclusin··on Bitcoin is a ‘boon for surveillance’, says former CIA director
Bearer bonds aren't really legal in most jurisdictions anymore due to the obvious potential for misuse. It's mostly a hollywood trope now. There are still companies where ownership is determined by bearer shares, usually found in tax havens and such.
dclusin··on Mars Bar Robot Chases Customers Around the Store and Tempts Them to Buy Candy
Almost as dumb as the LCD panels they put over the freezer aisle doors that track your eye movement response to what they show on the panels.

dclusin··on Static website analytics with no JavaScript using GoAccess
I just run static site w/ nginx and have it periodically generate an html file... also served by nginx. I setup a cronjob to parse the last hours logs. U can see it in action: https://www.clusin.com/analytics/
dclusin··on Belgian Police Say They Decrypted Half a Billion ‘Sky’ Messages
Any more details on the type of phones they use? iPhones, stock Android, feature phones?

Would be neat to get a tech breakdown of the phones.

dclusin··on Greenwald: The Leading Activists for Online Censorship Are Corporate Journalists
I subscribe to the Financial Times. Decent journalism. Mostly business focused tho.
dclusin··on Airbnb will build a new tech hub in Atlanta
Don’t forget a batch job framework such as airflow.
dclusin··on Filecoin Now Has a Global Capacity of 2.5B Gigabytes
Should probably spell out billion. I initially read it as 2.5gb. Or maybe use a larger unit since this is a more tech focused site.
dclusin··on Launch HN: Noya (YC W21) – Direct air capture of CO2 using cooling towers
Feels to me like the intention of selling the gas is to offset operational costs until a carbon market for sequestering it underground becomes available?
dclusin··on Reddit valued at $6B on a $250M round
I think that the amount of gilded awards that are ironically given to posts on r/conservative from members of r/politics largely disproves the idea that people are unwilling to spend stupid amounts of money on what amount to shiny baubles. How much that makes of their revenue however, is only known by reddit.
dclusin··on AMC, GameStop Give Hedge Fund Mudrick Capital $200M in Gains
Whereas Hacker News is just a bunch of people who don't know what they're doing pretending to be experts to influence the actual idiots. You can find charlatans pretty much anywhere money or people with money congregate.
dclusin··on Ask HN: Why is desktop computing still so slow?
You must be new here.
dclusin··on Drones are poised to reshape home design
Marin, CA will ban them on account of the noise drones make.
dclusin··on Tony Hsieh has died
What sticks out to me in your comment is that in spite of all your nice words about their culture, the nicest/best people you worked with still left for other companies. I suspect it was probably a 20% pay raise that convinced them to.
dclusin··on How io_uring and eBPF Will Revolutionize Programming in Linux
There's a very niche conference called eBPF Summit* that has presentations from people at companies with first class engineering orgs talking about what they are doing with eBPF. The problems they are solving and the breadth of problems being solved are very impressive.

dclusin··on How to use Reddit to get your first users
Accounts are pretty cheap to buy
dclusin··on How to use Reddit to get your first users
For every meme like this there's probably a thousand that pretend to be this and fail miserably.
dclusin··on Google Publishes Latest Linux Patches So Only Trusted Tasks Share a Core
Amazon had just recently or was about to release S3, so cloud computing wasn't as much of a thing back then. The oh shit factor of today is because now business that have absolutely no relation to each other are now sharing CPU cores.
dclusin··on Apple's Shifting Differentiation
It's the age old thin client vs. fat client debate repeating itself again. It seems like as the chips & tools get more mature we'll see more and more model deployments on customer hardware. Transmitting gigabytes of sensor/input data to a nearby data center for real time result just isn't feasible for most applications.

There's probably lots of novel applications of AI/ML that remain to be built because of this limitation. Probably also good fodder for backing your way into a startup idea as a technologist.

dclusin··on Shanghai stock exchange suspends Ant Group's A-share IPO
I remember reading Jack Ma is on record describing large Chinese bank business models as analogous to pawn shops and in general criticizing regulators. Probably had something to do with it.
dclusin··on Is a billion dollars worth of server lying on the ground?
Digital ocean droplet:

dclusin··on Chrome unlikely to support XPath 3.1
YAML of course. /s
dclusin··on Uninstall Nano Defender
I've encountered it before. I believe its made it to HN front page a few times.
dclusin··on Fortunately, I don't squash my commits
I think it stems from the lack of experience with actually having to backport/revert non-trivial code changes in a large repository used by many people. For most engineers version control is just seen as a mechanism to collect credit for ones work. It's only when you get into these thorny situations do you appreciate the power of git.
