dcdc123··on Are Unpaid Take-Home Interview Assignments Ethical?
I once had a take home API integration task that was time-boxed to 2 hours using the honor system. I handed it in but then the interviewers never mentioned it so I assumed nobody paid attention to it and was a bit annoyed. Then I got into the technical interviews and I was asked tons of questions about the APIs I was supposed to integrate with. It wasn't until after the interview that I realized the task itself was probably completely ignored, they just wanted to see what things I learned about the assigned API in a couple hours.

I know that has nothing to do with the question in the title, but I found it interesting.

You can buy a nice rolling code receiver and pair of programmable key fob transmitters for $15.
dcdc123··on All-Time Highs Usually Lead to More All-Time Highs in the Stock Market
It is still scary to put a lot of new money in right now considering it is pretty easy to get >5% return with virtually no risk thanks to the high interest rates.

Where did you get those tiers from? They seem pretty arbitrary.

dcdc123··on My 3-year experiment as a digital nomad
Spent three years as an AirBnB nomad with my wife. We are back in our house between tenants getting ready to start out as van life nomads. We’ve also spent months at a time overseas and will again but don’t want to do that full time. This article has very little depth but it does give a decent high level view.
dcdc123··on Apple wants AI to run directly on its hardware instead of in the cloud
Other than not always storing state the Google Maps app works quite nicely on iOS.
dcdc123··on Apple wants AI to run directly on its hardware instead of in the cloud
Apple Maps is terrible at discovery which is what I am doing with Google Maps 90% of the time.
dcdc123··on Apple wants AI to run directly on its hardware instead of in the cloud
It is up to each app to store their state and resume. One of the most annoying apps for not doing this well is Google Maps. Holy crap I hate when I search something and get a route set and tab out to check something and com eback to a fresh Google Maps like 5 seconds later. They will fix it for a while then break it again several times a year. Once you start navigating it seems pretty reliable but until you hit start it is a shitshow.
dcdc123··on Apple allows some iOS apps to track user locations via lists of nearby SSIDs
Yes, I get that...I just meant his whole spiel about "not asking for permission being the norm". In the context of iOS permissions not asking is the exception.
dcdc123··on Apple allows some iOS apps to track user locations via lists of nearby SSIDs
How does that apply to thise case though? Asking for permissions on iOS is the norm and many apps include a message indicating what and why they are about to request something non-obvious before sending the request and triggering the popup.
dcdc123··on Playstation is erasing seasons of Discovery shows from customer libraries
I am pretty sure the issue here is Sony purchased some sort of pay-per-stream license and effectively sold the users unlimited streams rather than a perpetual license and gambled that most users would not watch the content all that much and they could make more money. Now they are no longer able or willing to pay to renew their license which makes the content unavailable to the users. I assume they could have licensed it in some way that allowed true perpetual access for the users that purchased it but that would have cost more and they would have made less.

^^ just in case it wasn't clear those are all assumptions of mine

dcdc123··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
The changes to Chrome do not happen until this summer. Until then uBlock Origin is effectively equal on both browsers.
dcdc123··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
I haven't had issues with Chrome, either. That is not what this site is about. It is simply showing if the version of the script loaded on YouTube is the same version of the script uBlock's filters are designed to target. Any issues here affect all browsers equally.
dcdc123··on El Salvador's Bitcoin investments are in the black
This sounds like a pump-and-dump :)

But really...how much could they have earned if they invested it elsewhere instead? It seems silly for any country to invest in crypto. Nations should use their money to invest in themselves and build their economy, not to park it in crypto.

I've got this suspicion a lot of organizations are using these AI detector results to fire people only to replace them with AI generated content.
dcdc123··on Takkyu-bin: Luggage forwarding in Japan
I am a full-time nomad and barely do any advance planning and still heard about it constantly. On top of that it is highly visible while in Japan. Counters and signs for it at the airport, every hotel offers it and most will ask about it, and you see the people running bags around on bicycles and motorcycles with trailers all over the place. You would need to be an exceptionally oblivious person to miss it for ten years.
dcdc123··on Takkyu-bin: Luggage forwarding in Japan
I mean I guess if you don't go to the airport or any hotels for ten years it might be possible to miss it as well. Every hotel offers it, the airport has plenty of signs, and the actual people on bikes and motorcycles with trailers moving the bags are _all over_ the place.
dcdc123··on Takkyu-bin: Luggage forwarding in Japan
> It took me more than a decade of living in Japan to notice the takkyu-bin service.

That’s sort of shocking to me. I’ve only spent a few months in Japan but it was well known among people I knew offering advice leading up to each trip and mentioned on every single travel guide. On top of that there are always lines at every counter and you see them often enough picking up and dropping off in hotels.

dcdc123··on Apple patents suggest future AirPods could monitor biosignals and brain activity
I don't know what to think of that other than it's sort of cool that we can do that with relatively inexpensive consumer electronics as a _secondary_ function.
dcdc123··on Booking.com makes a fortune – so why is it leaving its bills to hotels unpaid?
I am a full time digital nomad and stay in a ton of hotels. I have once gotten the same rate directly, usually it is 20-30% higher. Hotels basically force you to third parties.
dcdc123··on Booking.com makes a fortune – so why is it leaving its bills to hotels unpaid?
This sounds like a trigger for hotels to treat booking.com customers poorly. I imagine people would be better off booking somewhere else. I would suggest directly with hotels but that pretty much always costs more money than booking through a third party so maybe Expedia/Hotels.com or something.
