dcarmo··on I'm Eric Ries, author of "The Lean Startup" and new book "Incorruptible" – AMA
It's interesting how none of the top comments mentions capitalism as the reason for companies losing their original mission. It's the same force that causes enshittification: the (unachieavable) infinite pursuit of profit. Sooner or later all companies will fall into the "financial gravity". The ones the author mentioned just haven't gotten there yet.
dcarmo··on Canada slashes 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to 6%
In case you're not aware, Chinese cars have the same or even better quality than US, European and Japanese cars. Their electric vehicles are cheap and high quality, it's really impressive.
dcarmo··on Apple has a private CSS property to add Liquid Glass effects to web content
The App Store app seems to be using web views extensively.
dcarmo··on Climb aboard Brazil's hurricane truck of happiness
Me neither!
dcarmo··on United States vs. Google
Well in a country where company lobbying is legal, it's very debatable if political parties are really defending the interests of people.
dcarmo··on Everything I know about elite America I learned from Fresh Prince and West Wing
> What I can’t quite disentangle is whether it taught me how to get what I had always wanted or taught me what to want.

This is a question that keeps coming back to me and I still don't know the answer. And maybe I'll never will.

dcarmo··on The K-shaped recovery
Your charity argument only validates the parent's comment. No healthy society should rely on private charitable as safety net for the less fortunates.
dcarmo··on Ask HN: Career and life advice for a 30yo
It's interesting that your feeling that "academia is dying, and dare i say irrelevant", to me, is exactly what brought us here and to the status quo you're complaining about. Maybe return to academia and improve things there?
dcarmo··on Firefox 74
I wish Firefox had a good multi-account support like Chrome has. That, and the fact that iOS 14 might allow to set your default browser would make me move to use Firefox everywhere.
dcarmo··on Ask HN: What has your work taught you that other people don't realize?
Why do you consider the time playing Everquest wasted? It was what you wanted to do, you did it and had fun. Now you want to do something else and that's fine.
dcarmo··on In the Pancreas, Common Fungi May Drive Cancer
I lost my mom this year to the same cancer and I get really excited with any advancements that are made in this area. I feel like we're still playing with sticks and stones in terms of pancreatic cancer treatment. The whole surgery plus chemotherapy is just barbaric.
dcarmo··on Stardew Valley and real-life labour (2017)
Thanks!
dcarmo··on Stardew Valley and real-life labour (2017)
I was going to comment that I'd love to know/read more about the author. Where can I follow him?
dcarmo··on U.S. Is a Rich Country with Symptoms of a Developing Nation
And it's a lottery in the end. You can't count on it until you're selected.
dcarmo··on Cancer Progress: Much More Than You Wanted To Know (2018)
My mom was diagnosed 1.5 years ago, and the uncertainty of it all is the worst part. It soothes my heart to know I'm not going through this alone.
dcarmo··on Ask HN: Is there a better period of the year to apply for a H1B position?
Cool, that makes sense. Thanks!
dcarmo··on Barcelona residents used sensors to demonstrate high noise levels at night
Definitely not Portuguese, you're right (source: I'm Brazilian.)
dcarmo··on Ending Bitcoin Support
Because it's rare.
dcarmo··on Ask HN: It’s 2018, what to build now?
I think that one business model that will never get old is information spread. Most (all?) of the problems we see in the world today could possibly be fixed if people were more knowledgeable. And I don't mean necessarily textbook knowledge, but common stuff as well.

For example, I live in a somewhat small city and it's not easy to know where can I go to have swimming classes. Google could help me with that, but usually these places aren't very tech-savvy (or they do have a certain presence, but they don't keep it updated).

Another great example: https://www.pointy.com/.

dcarmo··on New York's vanishing shops and storefronts: 'It's not Amazon, it's rent'
It's not like everyone have the kind of money to do NYC shopping experience (specially if you're not American.)
dcarmo··on Ask HN: For expats living in Europe: how hard it is to progress in your career?
Thanks for sharing you experience!
dcarmo··on Cancelable Promises: Why was this proposal withdrawn?
It would've certainly helped to avoid this: https://facebook.github.io/react/blog/2015/12/16/ismounted-a...
dcarmo··on Moving from Native Apps to Progressive Web Apps
I hope Apple does something similar and we can all move towards this direction, which seems to be the best approach, in my opinion.
dcarmo··on How John and Patrick Collison Built Stripe
Why is it overhyped?
dcarmo··on Should we solar panel the Sahara desert?
I think OP's point is more about storage than transmission. Yes you can transport electrons over a wire, but that has a cost and then you have a limited reachability. With liquid on the other hand, you can store in massive tanks and transport anywhere in the world to produce energy locally.
dcarmo··on Report says Uber surge pricing has a twist: some drivers flee
If that's the case, it's actually pretty smart. Do you think it could work in other fields (such as restaurants, as you mentioned)? I mean, would people be ok with paying more in a restaurant that's crowded?
dcarmo··on Apple's Products Are Getting Harder to Use
Four fingers also work.
dcarmo··on LAX becomes largest U.S. airport to allow Uber, Lyft pickups
When I was in LA I went to rent a car with FlightCar, and needed a ride to their parking lot from LAX. When I got into a taxi and told the driver where I wanted to go and for what purpose, he got so mad saying that I should've waited for the rental place bus and I explained to him that this one didn't have one. I had to pay $20 because he said so. Thankfully FlightCar reimbursed me for the value, but god damn I was pissed.
dcarmo··on Safari is the new IE
Handoff also works with Chrome - it only needs to be the default browser on your Mac.
dcarmo··on Headphones are the new walls for people in open-plan offices
The fact that I HAVE to listen to something to be able to isolate myself from my surroundings is pretty depressing to me, specially because I don't like listening to music for long periods of time.
