dbsmith83··on Elon Musk fires a top Twitter engineer over his declining view count
There is a difference between dominating a field and being a pioneer in a field. Competition is coming for Tesla. We'll see what happens soon enough
dbsmith83··on How ‘Diversity’ Policing Fails Science
If it gives you pause, I'm satisfied with that.
dbsmith83··on How ‘Diversity’ Policing Fails Science
Well thanks for your concern, but I would imagine many people here would consider your reminder as being quite patronizing
dbsmith83··on How ‘Diversity’ Policing Fails Science
Of course, and what is the issue with that? Propaganda has a vague definition, and basically any published opinion piece trying to persuade could be technically considered propaganda. At least it is labeled as an opinion piece, so what is the point about crying "It's propaganda!"? So what?

I have a problem with propaganda disguised as a news article, but that is not what is going on here.

dbsmith83··on How ‘Diversity’ Policing Fails Science
> Turns out, well-written articles get input from all interested parties and include any opposition research so that readers can look at the information presented and decide what the report means.

You do realize this is an opinion piece, and not a news article, right?

dbsmith83··on Tell HN: Firefox Is an awesome browser right now
Oh that's it.. no wonder why I couldn't find it. I didn't have enough coffee this morning.
dbsmith83··on Tell HN: Firefox Is an awesome browser right now
I have seen this phrase in several places, but cannot find the origin of the phrase. Where is it from?
dbsmith83··on Ask HN: How do you test SQL?
That still doesn't fix the compatibility issues. Postgres has features/syntax that sqlite does not have, so you can't test postgres syntax with sqlite sometimes
dbsmith83··on Japan: the harbinger state
But is that the value of the building, or the land that is increasing for yours? My home (building + land) value has gone up a ton due to the housing shortages in tech centers, but on the assessment, the building value has gone down, while the land value has shot up a lot.
dbsmith83··on Ask HN: Strategies for working with engineers that are too smart?
I've seen both sides of this. Everyone's idea of a 'sufficient solution' is different. Sometimes good enough for one engineer is not good enough for another. The opposite of the engineer who adds to much complexity to try to solve it too perfectly is the engineer who has a solution that is 'simplistic' rather than just simple. The simplistic-solution engineer is content to overlook details of the problem so that it can never be 99-100% solved/automated or extended. It's like the bad kind of laziness.
dbsmith83··on MIT faculty adopts “Statement on Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom”
> Google's not obligated to figure out exactly where the line of legality is.

Sure, but it is in their business interests to have a good approximation for where the line is, hence why they have lawyers. My point is that from everything I have read about it, it doesn't even seem like they were close to said line

dbsmith83··on MIT faculty adopts “Statement on Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom”
> Title VII carves out several opnions as, by law, not "valuable" in the sense that expressing them constitutes either harassment or creation of a hostile work environment. And doing business in America means complying with that law...

Yeah, but the thing is that what Damore did was nowhere near the criteria of title vii hostile work environment. You're making it sound as if there was some legal obligation for Google (or any other American business) to let him go, but there was not. It was cowering to activists which lead to the termination, not any legal obligation for doing business. The argument that it had anything to do with title vii holds no water for me

dbsmith83··on MIT faculty adopts “Statement on Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom”
Agreed, though that is what I am criticizing Google for (being overzealous). As unfortunate as it is to lose 2 candidates, I would value employees who can tolerate people with opinions they don't like
dbsmith83··on MIT faculty adopts “Statement on Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom”
We are not talking about if the termination was legal or not, we are talking about title vii. Damore's opinion does not meet the criteria of a hostile work environment
dbsmith83··on MIT faculty adopts “Statement on Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom”
I don't think you can read the law in good faith and make that claim
dbsmith83··on MIT faculty adopts “Statement on Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom”
That sounds nice, but then look at James Damore. I don't think he treated anyone less than human. He had an unpopular opinion and Google cowered to activists
dbsmith83··on Writing good performance self reviews
gah, I knew I should have pushed out doing mine one more day so I could have read this first. I guess there's always next year!
dbsmith83··on The FBI alleges TikTok poses national security concerns
> Chinese social media inside China is actively directing youth towards vigorous / productive / pedagogical endeavours, whereas ticktock outside China heavily promotes pointless endless innane naval gazing such as pranking, gaming, influencers etc.

This would be interesting if true. Do you have any sources for this or is it just an observation?

dbsmith83··on Companies ran an experiment: Pay workers their full salary to work fewer days
Not sure why you are getting downvoted. I thought your reply was at least a lot more thoughtful than the average one here. It seems like in this topic:

<personal anecdote or opinion> pro 4-day workweek = upvote

<personal anecdote or opinion> skeptical of 4-day workweek = downvote

I guess it is human nature to dismiss skepticism of an outcome when the outcome is strongly desired

dbsmith83··on Python 3.12.0 is to remove long-deprecated items
I think you're missing the point. Nothing is wrong with deprecation, but it should be done properly. Ideally, breaking changes should correspond to a major version increase
dbsmith83··on Why are male testosterone levels falling?
Woosh
dbsmith83··on Why are male testosterone levels falling?
Yes, continue shouting at everyone who has a different opinion than you that it is barbaric. I'm sure it will change hearts and minds and make everyone think you're a mature adult.
dbsmith83··on Why are male testosterone levels falling?
Other people can have different ideas about what is morally correct, and it isn't some barbaric idea that an unborn person should not be allowed to be killed. You may not agree with it with your moral calculus, but it shouldn't be unreasonable to see someone else's perspective. You really need to step out of your bubble and tune your hostility way down because it comes off as very childish
dbsmith83··on The United States’ Unamendable Constitution

How?

dbsmith83··on Alien Truth
> what if everything is probabilistic analog math?

you said every thing which implies discreteness. Also, probabilities are probabilities of an event (read: something discrete) happening

dbsmith83··on Ask HN: Has anyone managed to find enjoyment in their work after burnout?
I could crank out a mile easily. At least a person can just run slowly. 100 pullups though? That just ain't happening
dbsmith83··on Alien Truth
> It's speculative, whether an alien species, with a perceptual and cognitive system evolved entirely elsewhere under other pressures, would have an understanding that intersects with our subset of reality. I personally think it's unlikely. What that would mean is that we wouldn't be able to communicate, never mind trade technology and mathematical ideas.

I mean, maybe, but this is conveniently unprovable, much like the flying spaghetti monster, since you are saying we could not communicate because our slices of reality don't intersect. I disagree and think that most likely we would live in a reality that was largely the same, but I guess we'll never know!

dbsmith83··on Dear JetBrains, Don't mess with your UI
How do you explain the current UI shit hole that we live in these days then? It surely wasn't to increase productivity or user experience. UIs in the 90's were more functional and flexible than the UIs of today.
dbsmith83··on Alien Truth
> Mathematics is most definitely a human endeavor, and so we can’t really make claims about its existence in the universe independent of humans.

Can you give an example of a mathematical concept which could be different?

I believe that math is universal. We may use models to understand it (infinity, perfect circles, etc.), but the underlying mathematical truth is independent of humans. The same is true for science. There are physical laws which we look to discover. We use models in science to understand them, but the models are not the same as the underlying truth

dbsmith83··on Ex Police Officer Used Law Enforcement Tech to Hack Women’s Explicit Photos
Point still stands: there was no good reason to make the statements because those are obvious. You said nothing of any value: "bad people who do the thing which we as a society have deemed bad are bad!"
