dazzla··on Founders' Accents
Absolutely.

"If you're trying to found a company and get venture funding from Americans, you need to be able to communicate well with Americans. No one is saying there's a correct way to speak anything, but it's obvious Paul Graham is talking about founders going for an American market."

However a big part of startup accelerator is about helping the founders gain the skills needed to be successful. No reason communicating well with Americans shouldn't be one of those skills that help is given for.

"That's just straight out wrong, sorry to say. There are plenty of cases of one way unintelligibility in ALL parts of the world, in many languages. English is no exception, just consider the stereotype of American tourists being confounded by Australian or England-English."

Yes it can be mostly a one way problem but there will always be subtle problems in both directions. I'm a UK native and have been living in the US for many years married to an American wife. We still come across words or phrases that confuse each other.

dazzla··on Founders' Accents
What I'm attempting to add to the conversation is another perspective to communication across accents. I think understanding other people's perspectives helps break down communication barriers. Both sides can try and reach across the gap.
dazzla··on Founders' Accents
Everybody has an accent! There is not a single person in the world that has "no accent"!

This may seam like nit picking but it is in fact very important. When someone in the US says they think someone speaks English "with an accent" it's actually the fact that they are not speaking English with an American accent. Who's to say that speaking English with an American accent is the correct way?

The English language is used in many parts of the world and has diverged immensely. Pronunciation has changed, spelling has changed, words have been added, etc.

So bear that in mind when you say someone speaks bad English or wonder why don't they make the effort to speak it "correctly".

Also remember communication is 2 way. If you can't understand someone due to their accent most likely they cannot understand you due to your accent.

dazzla··on Announcing AWS Elastic Beanstalk for Node.js
You can now use configuration files to customize your instance. You can install packages, download files, run shell scripts etc. Works well.

dazzla··on CBS Bans SodaStream Ad
Really this is a big deal? I remember soda stream from the 80's in the UK. I'm sure they even eventually had official coke and Pepsi syrups that could be used with them. Didn't kill the market there and I'm sure it won't here.

Seams like they've been in business since 1903.

dazzla··on Ask HN: Anyone Making Money on Windows Phone 8 Apps?
I have an iOS/Android app side project that I'm interested in porting to Windows Phone 8/7. I have never worked in the microsoft eco system. I have 2 questions.

What would be a good test device? No contract, not too expensive but also a viable device.

Anywhere or anyone recommended to do the development?

dazzla··on Effectively Collecting and Acting on Feedback
Great article and looks like an interesting product. However I don't see any pricing info and also I can't click on the most popular articles listed at the bottom of the blog.
dazzla··on Why the Amazon Associates Affiliate Program Is Highly Underrated
Don't count on being able to use Amazon Associates in a mobile app, mobile formatted site or getting commission for mobile visitors to a regular site.

https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp/advertising/api/deta... 4. (e) You will not, without our express prior written approval, use any Product Advertising Content on or in connection with any site or application designed or intended for use with a mobile phone or other handheld device, or any television set-top box (e.g., digital video recorders, cable or satellite boxes, streaming video players, blu-ray players, or dvd players) or Internet-enabled television (e.g., GoogleTV, Sony Bravia, Panasonic Viera Cast, or Vizio Internet Apps).

I have never heard of anyone getting any response for prior written approval. Myself included after many attempts.

I'm interested in the how as well but because I'm interested in applying it to different data.
dazzla··on Why I Can't Use PayPal To Buy Your Product
I'm fairly sure I've done this in the last 6 months.
dazzla··on Why I Can't Use PayPal To Buy Your Product
I'm pretty sure you can go to pay while not logged in to PayPal. Then enter your credit card directly. They will tell you it's linked to an account and do you want to login. But there is still an option to go ahead and just use the card.
dazzla··on Ask HN: Why did YC fund two startups that do exactly the same thing?
I think the same team runs both now. However maybe they are both abandoned now as I can't get any response to support emails.
dazzla··on The Linux Setup, Noah Lorang, 37signals
As an alternative to 1Password you can try Keeper (https://keepersecurity.com/). It has Linux, Windows, OSX, iPhone/iPad, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry clients. With sync between all of them.

(I work for Keeper Security)

dazzla··on Dropping Prices Again-- EC2, RDS, EMR and ElastiCache
I think your in luck. Looks like your existing reserved instances will see the savings as well.

"This customer was in the process of switching to 3-year Heavy Utilization Reserved Instances (seeing most of their instances are running steady state) for a whopping savings of 55%. Now, with the new EC2 price drop we're announcing today, this customer will save another 37% on these Reserved Instances."

dazzla··on Dropping Prices Again-- EC2, RDS, EMR and ElastiCache
Amazon would only cost you an extra $350/month if you actually use that 3TB.
dazzla··on Atheism in America
The details if the opinions are not important for being able to respect that everyone takes different paths in life with differenet influences that lead to different opinions.
dazzla··on Atheism in America
It comes down to lack of respect for other people's opinions. As "that guy" could have any pet subject, religion, technology, sports, politics you name it. It's fine to be passionate about your opinions but you need to respect other people's opinions.
dazzla··on Galaxy Nexus Power Analysis: Why chargers can't keep up with navigation
I have a nexus one that while charging in the car and using navigation it would overheat and would not keep up either. Turned out to be a faulty battery and was just fine with any other battery.

I have not had much chance to test this on my GSM galaxy nexus but I have not noticed this problem so far.

dazzla··on Ask HN: Developing for IOS on a VM or "Hackintosh" environment
I started out with a hackintosh but learning OSX, Objective C, Cocoa Touch, XCode, etc was more than enough without that added hassle.

I'd buy a Mac as many have suggested or just do it with Android instead. It's easier to iterate on Android anyway and you can port to iOS afterwards.

dazzla··on Which do you use: Physical server, or hosting in the cloud?
I don't think you can import an image into Amazon.

You will need to start with an EC2 image (AMI) of which there are many both from Amazon and 3rd parties. Some of those AMI's may have close to all you need. I personally started with a bitmami image (http://bitnami.org/stacks). Once you have all your configuration done on that you can create your own personal AMI from it and use it to create additional instances (dev, staging, different customers, etc). That AMI will work for creating different instance sizes (memory/CPU). But I don't think there is a way to export an AMI and use it outside of Amazon.

dazzla··on Which do you use: Physical server, or hosting in the cloud?
Yes, you have full root access to your EC2 instances.
dazzla··on Ask HN: How many of you built a profitable startup while having a day job?
In the last couple of years I have built up Deal Drop (http://www.getdealdrop.com) to be $3,000/month in revenue as an antidote to the abusive relationship with my day job while helping raise my daughter of the same age. I hoped by now that I could quit and work full time on the side project but I settled for a less abusive day job instead.

This week I took a trip to the ER in an ambulance because I had a seizure at my new day job after one too many late nights working on the side project.

Be careful and know your limits better than I do.

dazzla··on Bootstrapping - the secret work week
So you have spent $14,700. You could have reduced that to $4,000 by outsourcing at a high $20/hr and got it done sooner. You might have been collecting revenue by now. Your project would have been further along and you'd have more time to enjoy life, move the project even further along or do another project.

Assuming you are doing this to create a business and not for... fun. Work smarter instead of longer. Sign up for the Micropreneur Academy they have a lot of great articles for working smarter http://www.micropreneur.com

It boils down to stop trying to do everything yourself. Put a dollar value per hour on your time and aim for $75 - $100. Then you realize doing something yourself is NOT free but extremely expensive. Then you can look into outsourcing (programming, virtual assistant, copy writing, etc) with a more open mind. Once you are doing that you are making much more effective use of your time and you will not need as much time to get more done than you are now.

Following this (especially points 6-8) worked really well for me http://sivers.org/how2hire.

It took me a really long time to get this and actually do something about it. It's very liberating and exciting to see completed work come back.

dazzla··on Will Steve Jobs' final vendetta haunt Google?
I think a lot of mobile versions are done via a 3rd party service. Separate web app, domain, etc. But it should be possible to make the redirection smart enough to send you to your original destination on the mobile site.
dazzla··on Will Steve Jobs' final vendetta haunt Google?
Why do so many mobile site redirects get this wrong?
