dawidw··on Ask HN: Does anyone else notice increased incompetence?
> Incompetence happened a great deal in the Soviet Union. It mentally killed people to see it everyday.

Wasn't it result of communism? At least that's my impression after reading Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's "The Gulag Archipelago".

>> The biggest culprit for gout is definitely carbs (sugar)

>Citation? Because isn't gout generally thought by the medical establishment to be caused by high-protein, low vegetable diets that raise uric acid?

As I've heard from the person doing carnivore this diet is low-protein and high-fat one.

> Literally the only thing that matters is moving fast

> Code quality is really not important at all as long as the product works and is bug free

According to Robert C. Martin is not possible to move fast without good quality.

What about modelling? Do those rules apply also there?

I have question regarding example of "Retrieving details of a file"

https://www.base-api.io/reference/files

The curl request uses [1] id and in response we get [2] id. Why is that?

That intrigued me. Why one can't compare rates internationally? I think we can and that what rates are for, aren't they?
dawidw··on How to Build Good Software
Using that logic, what would be "working car"? When wheels don't fall apart?

So I think "working code/application/program" is when it does what it is supposed to do. Including not crashing.

dawidw··on Muscle memory discovery ends 'use it or lose it' dogma
> Anabolic steroids are a Class C drug in the UK so in general are illegal to possess and distribute unless prescribed.

So they are legal - only access is controlled (prescription from doctor).

Alcohol and cigarettes are legal - only access is controlled (age).

Violence is legal - only access is controlled (police).

Tortures are not legal - no one has access to do that.

Capital punishment is not legal (in some countries) - no one has access to do that.

dawidw··on Muscle memory discovery ends 'use it or lose it' dogma
Exactly. Testosterone is just a medicine and it's even prescribed to old ladies if their condition need that (I know one such case). Testosterone gives a lot of power when your body is weak after some other treatment. As a side effect (or maybe desired when due to disease you're losing your muscles) is getting more muscles and energy.
dawidw··on Why I Gave Up on Extreme Minimalism (2015)
"It’s hard being this way sometimes, because society doesn’t consider it the norm and provides no guidelines for how us “renaissance people” might build our lives in a way that suits us. We’re expected to pick one specialization and build a career around it."

That's a pity that the blogger didn't say how it was easier/different in old days.

dawidw··on Muscle memory discovery ends 'use it or lose it' dogma
They are legal medicine. If you suffer from serious disease, doctor will prescribe them to you.

Now interesting question is: if someone wants to have big muscles - is it serious disease? In some sense it's similar to silicon breast implants - in both cases it's mental 'disease'/disfunction/discomfort - so some doctor's help is needed. Or surgery due to bad looking nose eg.

dawidw··on Ask HN: Why can’t we eat dead human flesh like we eat dead animal flesh?
That's quite interesting. I've heard that there are some substances which human body need and which can be found in animal flesh. I've just googled for that and it seems there are plenty of articles confirming that. So I don't know who is right...

dawidw··on Alarming Decline of Quality Youth Playtime
Yes, I am parent of 2 kids: 7 and 4 years old. But my (single) case doesn't matter. From my observations women are naturally much more capable than men to deal with kids. One simple fact: they're more talkative. So the kid has better contact with language. Simple example: when kid gets hurt mum is usually trying to cheer up while father is trying to say something like "oh, it's nothing, go on and play". At the beginning, the attitude of woman is needed by kid, later - the one from father. Both are very different and very important.
dawidw··on Ask HN: How do you deal with brain fog? Does coding give you brain fog?
Have you ever tried "alternative medicine"? I mean method like drinking apple juice for 3 days to clean your guts etc. Or drink only wgetable coctails? I've never tried those, however I've seen hundreds of comments from different users claiming that such method helped them where traditional medicine couldn't. I won't share links here because those YouTube videos are not in English but I'm pretty sure you'll be able to find similar in English.

Anyway - good luck!
