davidkuennen··on Ask HN: I hate gym. How to stay in shape?
This. So much.

It's the key I use as well to hit the gym. Just go there physically. Even with the lowest amount of motivation when everything's shit.

The line “if a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly” comes to mind. If you are already at the gym, you might as well do it badly and then most of the time you're doing it well in the end.

davidkuennen··on Microsoft’s big ChatGPT event has started
> "We think of it humbly as the next generation of Search and browsing," Mehdi said. "We're going to reimagine the search engine, the web browser and new chat experiences into something we think of as your copilot for the web."

It's happening

davidkuennen··on Flutter desktop isn’t there yet
Thank you! That's reassuring and I strongly believe that Flutter is the best option for developing cross platform apps right now.
davidkuennen··on Flutter desktop isn’t there yet
First of all: Thank you for your outstanding work!

And sorry to ask this here, but how have the recent layoffs affected the flutter team?

We're using flutter as our main framework for our app and it's quite important.

The layoffs have sparked some fears that flutter development might slow down.

davidkuennen··on Microsoft Teams Premium: powered by OpenAI’s GPT-3.5
Oof. I guess it's hard if your product is a feature.
davidkuennen··on Ask HN: Did improving conversation and listening skills win you anything big?
Does anyone have good readings to improve on conversation and communication skills generally?
davidkuennen··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
Database: Postgres

Backend: Go

Frontend: React

App: Flutter

davidkuennen··on Apple announces full Swift rewrite of the Foundation framework (2022)
Apple has such an unpredictable stance on software development.

For example after all these years and lots of requests for such a feature it's still not possible to get notified about new reviews for your apps, but it's possible to get notified when a user edits a review after you've replied to it.

davidkuennen··on Identity thieves bypassed Experian security to view credit reports
It still boggles my mind how much you can do with another persons SSN in the US. It's like a password for your life in plain text. Crazy.
davidkuennen··on No, you can’t manufacture that like Apple does (2014)
Interesting. Anecdotally we (myself, friends and family) never get prescribed Paracetamol here in Germany. It's always Ibuprofen. I always felt it was obvious, given the supposedly side effects of it.
davidkuennen··on A day in the life of almost every vending machine
I loved the vending machine game of Japan. It was incredible to be able to get water or other drinks basically anywhere. Even in the most remote places there was a vending machine. They always worked flawlessly as well.
davidkuennen··on Ask HN: Who else is working/on call over Christmas?
Very nice of you. And I second k8s's robustness. Have a little one person startup with 100k users. Went on 5 weeks vacation in October and November and never had to worry about a thing. Everything kept going and just had to answer a few support mails here and there.
davidkuennen··on Linux, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft want to break the Google Maps monopoly
Google Maps is an incredible product. Having traveled a lot lately it dawned on me even more. It's super helpful navigating the public transport in Japan, where even the natives use it as well as the most remote places in Indonesia, where even the natives use it. Simply incredible. I would pay for it.

It's a tough challenge for Microsoft and co.

davidkuennen··on Tesla FSD data is getting worse, according to beta tester self-reports
It's actually 80 mph in Germany now [0], which makes this such a great and useful feature. It really feels like the future.

davidkuennen··on Binance is trying to calm investors, but its finances remain a mystery
Interesting, did this change recently? I remember cashing out almost 6 figures EUR around the peak last year without any problem. Since then I stayed away from the crypto market.
davidkuennen··on Apple to end employee gagging clauses after activist campaign
Not always. Some services I use have increased their prices dramatically, but I'm still on the old grandfathered plans.

I do that for my users as well. If I increase the pricing for the paid subscription, all existing paid users will always keep the old, cheaper plan.

davidkuennen··on Ask HN: What Is Going on with Neo4j?
My app is serving thousands of concurrent users with tables of billions of rows with postgres powered by just 4 CPUs and 20GB RAM.
davidkuennen··on Recommendations for Japan Travel
That's the way I walked by accident when I was at that shrine 4 weeks ago. Very beautiful.
davidkuennen··on Migrating from Vue 2 to Svelte
This. For me product velocity and producing value fast for customers is always top priority. Migrating from state of the art framework #1 to state of the art framework #2 seems wild.
davidkuennen··on Ask HN: Do you look angry while you work?
I always get the feedback that I look very angry when playing the piano. I guess it applies to me concentrating on other tasks as well.
davidkuennen··on Mass of transactions leaving crypto.com wallets
And Tether is struggling hard to stay alive: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/tether/
davidkuennen··on Why is every layoff 10-15%?
Is going back to the office such a huge thing in other countries? Here in Germany almost nothings changed from the main COVID time in terms of home office.

It seems like our standard of working has transformed and will not revert back.

davidkuennen··on The New Hydrogen Car That Travels 2k Km with a Single Tank
This is the biggest argument for me why EVs are the superior technology.

Thinking further with renewable energies, heat pumps and more, soon we'd only need infrastructure for electricity and internet.

davidkuennen··on Ask HN: Do you believe there's really an alternative to Twitter?
Currently? No, I don't think there is a legit alternative.
davidkuennen··on Meta’s Meltdown Shows How Big Tech’s Invincible Era Is Over
This has nothing to do with tech. It's the ad business that's struggling, because of the economic situation and because more players want to have a piece of the cake (e.g. Apple, TikTok).
davidkuennen··on Ask HN: Is everyone on Hacker News super charismatic?
I often find HN rather detached from the "real world". ;-)

But there's certainly lots of smart people here.

davidkuennen··on The first minute of every phone call is torture now
Can confirm. From Germany, have the same number for 15+ years, basically any provider has this number and probably leaked it at some time. Still no spam at all. I think there are heavy penalties for that in Germany.
davidkuennen··on Chip design shifts as fundamental laws run out of steam
It depends. I dream of a world where your Smartphone is also your personal computer and you can just project everything from it using AR wherever you are. In that case they have to improve on both.
davidkuennen··on Housing in Tokyo is cheaper and more spacious than people think
As someone being in Tokyo right now chatting with locals about this topic it's just not generally true or comparable to other cities.

Sure there are parts of Tokyo that are cheaper, but Tokyo is gigantic. All the places that "matter" with reasonably fast commute are very expensive and small.

davidkuennen··on An ‘everything app’ would be bad for liberal democracies and free markets
And then there will be apps within the everything app and one of these apps will want to become the everything app within the everything app. Funny.
