davide_v··on Show HN: API Parrot – Automatically Reverse Engineer HTTP APIs
Nice, I was looking for something like this. I tried it on Ubuntu but after clicking Capture requests > Launch Chrome, nothing happens.
davide_v··on Show HN: Learn a language quickly by practising speaking with AI
It seems very nice, I tried japanese because I'm studying it, but it got difficult too quickly. In particular japanese needs furigana absolutely (the hiragana over kanji) or romaji (options to be activated/deactivated).
davide_v··on Today we are launching our new Twitter API access tiers
Crazy nosense change. $100 is damn high and 10K tweets a month is damn low. Even if you were willing to pay, the amount of tweets is so low that it's in fact totally useless.
davide_v··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
It depends on the MVP, but I'd (still?) use the MEAN stack with the latest Angular and Node. Expecially because I made a boilerplate [1] that allows me to start any project faster.

davide_v··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest, easiest way to host a cronjob in 2022?
Yes I mean failure of the cron script itself. If the EC2 goes down entirely there are other alerts you can set up on AWS, such as Cloudwatch or similar.
davide_v··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest, easiest way to host a cronjob in 2022?
I'm still using the old way: "crontab -e" inside the same EC2 where I run the app. In case of failure I automatically send an email to me. This is the easiest scenario in case you already have an EC2 for some other things that is already running. Instead, from scratch (no EC2), I'd probably use Lambda.
davide_v··on A self-updating list of the most current useragents
Thank you for this, I always struggled to find an up to date list of UA.

If you don't mind, I made a simple Node.js wrapper of this API and released as a NPM package, you can find it here: https://github.com/DavideViolante/useragents-me-api/

davide_v··on Extremely Linear Git History
I thought I was a very tidy person, then I saw this.
davide_v··on Automattic open to hiring ex-Twitter individuals or even entire teams
That's smart move imho. Usually engineers and other people that worked at Twitter went through a very strict hiring process. So hiring them is equal (usually) to hiring very skilled and smart people.
davide_v··on AWS and Blockchain
In Italy a famous news website is using blockchain since 2020 to, I quote literally: "help readers check source of news", "strengthen bonds of trust between its organization and its readers and customers", "trace the history and source of each news item."

News (EN): https://www.ansa.it/english/news/science_tecnology/2020/04/0...

Example of news in the blockchain: https://blockchain.check.ansa.it/landing/b150aff9f028f7339f0...

The first time I saw it I was quite surprised. I'd like to hear opinions about it here. Eg: it's blockchain stricly necessary here?

davide_v··on I record myself on audio 24x7 and use an AI to process the information
This reminds me about Black Mirror's White Christmas episode where they create a digital clone inside a white "cookie" and then they use it for receiving tasks such as making toasts. This project is very similar actually. I found very interesting the part where you can track your food and automatically calculate the calories every day without writing anything anywhere.
davide_v··on Falcon Heavy Launch [video]
The boosters landing will always give me goosebumps.
davide_v··on Pokemon Card Animation
AMAZING.
davide_v··on Ask HN: How to find what I am really good at?
You are good at what you love.
davide_v··on Ask HN: Is there a developer laptop that does not suck and is not a Mac in 2022?
I got in 2016 the Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air for about ~750$ and I'm still using it today (Ubuntu 20). The design is the most similar to Mac design, but with more ports (:D). When I bought it, the other option I considered was Dell XPS, and I see it's mentioned many times in the comments.
davide_v··on Complete Introduction to Particles in Japanese
I'm currently in a 6 months streak on Duolingo japanese and this article is actually very useful to understand the difference between ha, ga and he, that I think are the most tricky. In fact the ga explanation is the longest hehe :p Keep it going, the website is super well made and fast (what's the tech behind?).
davide_v··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
Absolutely agree, but I think we are in the smaller size of the pie. I had for many years a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini (4.3' 124mm), super small phone that I loved, then I switched to a Xiaomi Redmi 4 Pro (5.0' 141mm), reasonably small but bigger then S4 and still usable with one hand without risks. Then I switched to a Xiaomi Mi 9T for the huge body-display ratio and I always feel it's too big (6.39' 156mm) and sometimes I need 2 hands, and I've pretty big hands... Nowdays you can't find any good android phone around ~140mm in size, that I think is the perfect size.
davide_v··on Show HN: Veganize any recipe site with EatKind Chrome extension
Oh now I see. I was trying the "cheese burger" from the examples and the results were just Google with no option to veganize. I'd remove that example imho. The cheesecake example is what I was expecting in general. Thanks, keep up the good work.
davide_v··on Show HN: Veganize any recipe site with EatKind Chrome extension
I expected to start from a recipe and then have the veganized recipe. How it works now is a Google search, so I have to find another recipe, if there is. I would skip the Google part and start from a recipe URL and have as a result that specific recipe veganized (ingredients replacement). It would also prevent people from leaving the website.
davide_v··on Show HN: Veganize any recipe site with EatKind Chrome extension
Based on the title I was thinking the product was different. The "veganize" term is misleading here imho. I was expecting that, given a recipe, you replace non-vegan ingredients with vegan ingredients and so being able to cook that recipe, somehow. Actually it would be a very nice product...
davide_v··on Myopia treatment 'smart glasses' from Japan to be sold in Asia
You are absolutely right, I tested in on myself over several years. I want to share my story so far. Since I got a prescription of -4 I was so mad that I didn't want to wear those glasses. Furthermore I really felt like they were too "strong" for me. So I kept wearing the previous one that was at -3. Since then my myopia never got worse. But I wanted to go further and try to reverse it in some way. I have read many studies, like the one you mentioned about the animals with glasses/contact lenses that after some time develops myopia. That is the real proof that "too strong" glasses causes myopia. But what does "too strong" mean? It actually means 2 cases: the glasses that are actually stronger that the one you need (like -4 if you have -3.75), or the glasses that are used when you don't need them (short distance). In both cases you are slowly increasing your myopia (like the animal study). So to stop the myopia you just need to use the "right" correction for the "right" time. For example at PC you don't need full correction (for low myopia you don't even need glasses at all), because full correction is only for driving and looking at infinite distance. So the first thing to do, if you work at PC, is to buy less strong glasses (even super cheap one you can find on Amazon). What less strong means? It depends on your myopia and your distance from the screen. But you can calculate it using a ruler that has the diopters written on it (just print it: https://endmyopia.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/myopia-rule...). For example I've -3.5 but at PC I wear -1.5 because my screen is 70cm far. As other mentioned already, the best correction you need to use is the one that blurs the text a little bit, where you are still able to read but is not crystal clear. You may notice that this gets even harder if you have different myopia per eye, because one eye may blur, but not the other or viceversa (I still don't know what happens here, if it's better to cover 1 eye or not, etc). Btw, if you combine: less strong glasses at PC, regular intervals looking way far, no glasses for reading/phone, you will surely stop the myopia, and maybe you even improve. After years I just improved from -4 to -3.25, but it's better than nothing (and I was not so constant)... I'd love to hear some other experiences here.
davide_v··on AngularJS support is ending, and developers can migrate to Angular
Totally correct to discontinue the old AngularJS imho. Google, years ago, made one of the best choice adopting TypeScript for its new framework, Angular. I used to code in both AngularJS and Angular, and the improvement between the two is huge, thanks also to TypeScript. I'm a big Angular fan, even if I tried React, I highly prefer Angular for being more strict, complete and imho more suited for very big projects.
davide_v··on [dead]
"only a few hours" for Facebook is literally billions.
davide_v··on In 2020, two thirds of Google searches ended without a click
It's actually something good (expecially for Google) since the information found is now usually in the results itself instead of inside a website. If you notice, in the last years, Google shows you lists extracted from articles, makes calculations directly, answer simple questions like age, shows a lot of Wikipedia info for any person/movie on the right, etc, etc. It's not because there is more ads or because the results are irrelevant, actually I'm never disappointed by the results.
davide_v··on Irish webapp to recreate pub atmosphere at home
Funny that rain is part of the sounds :D. As an italian I'd never thought about adding it. Btw it's sounds amazing, but the sounds are a bit short in length and you can "feel" the repeating loop.
davide_v··on Rockstar pays $10k to modder who fixed GTA Online loading times
The original post where t0st explains how he did it it's fascinating. He improved the performance of a program without even having the source code. I can't image what he could do with the source code. I would instantly hire him as a QA and Performance Engineer or something like that. If R* won't get him, some other company will, and he will earn the money he deserves for sure.
davide_v··on Automatic Text Summarization in PDF Documents with Faster R-CNN and PEGASUS
Do you offer this service of text summarization via API? I didn't exactly catch that, but we would be interested.

Note: I think the "Register for free" button for the webinar is broken.

davide_v··on Skyline – Your GitHub story in 3D
Haha this is amazing!
davide_v··on I received my first donation on my open-source side project
I still remember the first donation I received from my project [1] back in 2017, yeah it felt amazing. The person who donated also sent me an email with subject "much thanks".

davide_v··on Google Photos will end its free unlimited storage in June 2021
So if I upgrade my photos don't upgrade to full res automatically, but if I download them they are actually full res? I don't have the original photos anymore, that's why I'm asking if Google keeps the full res and I'm able to retrieve them with a paid plan.
