davidcrow··on Just had a heart attack
I had mine in 2006 at 32. Details http://davidcrow.ca/article/1130/barcamper

Make sure you go your an annual check up. Figure out how to get some exercise. And pay attention to the warning signs.

Worst part for me was the 8 hours waiting for troponin levels. Well and the angiogram/pasty/stent.

davidcrow··on What is the problem accelerators are solving?
But we should put them in inflatable sumo suits for cushioning. Maybe a helmet.
davidcrow··on What is the problem accelerators are solving?
The article should have in the header a canonical URI that points to Jesse's original post. My bad if the template doesn't have this explicitly.

I like the idea of putting founders into a cyclotron, accelerating them to near the speed of light, and seeing what kind of energy they release when they collide with other founders.
davidcrow··on Creating a RevealJS Deck with AngularJS, Leap Motion and GoInstant
It's really clean. The LeapJS/AngularJS touchpoints look like they just make sense.
davidcrow··on Show HN: GoInstant widgets - building blocks for multi-user apps
Looks very interesting. Similar but with additional widgets that aren't in TogetherJS. Interesting to use eventing model and tie it more directly to lead scoring and qualification.
davidcrow··on Get a job if you're an entrepreneur complaining about local investors
I love all of the "arm chair CEOs" that assume by getting on a plane that they'll meet PMarcA in the SFO airport, they will raise $50MM on their idea and their good looks. Raising money is hard. Building a company is hard. It doesn't matter if it is in Toronto, Edmonton, NYC, Palo Alto, SF.
davidcrow··on “Ultimately, the team you build is the company you build”
Seems to still be there according to LinkedIn http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=12661295&locale=...
davidcrow··on “Ultimately, the team you build is the company you build”
It's a good thing they make investments, and not edits.
davidcrow··on “Ultimately, the team you build is the company you build”
Copywriters and editors, they do good work...
davidcrow··on “Ultimately, the team you build is the company you build”
What should it have been:

"Ultimately, the team you build is the company you build"

?

davidcrow··on Should you pay to pitch an angel group? What the data says
I have had my say on the broker model http://startupnorth.ca/2012/09/26/brokers-smokers-and-midnig...

Which is different than pay to pitch. Pay to pitch is broken for investment. It works for PR and attention, I.e., Demo.com, but I hate it to get investor attention. The closest I've seen is incubator DemoDays, but the interests are in closer alignment.

davidcrow··on Does your product pass the toothbrush test?
Frank & Oak - seriously. You know that I love the guys, but a DAU for F&O. I think that I'm easily 2xMAU maybe a WAU. But no way am I a DAU for F&O.

Google Search

GMail/Google Calendar (or device specific version: Taskbox/Sunrise) Rapportive Google Hangout/Skype Twitter LinkedIn Dropbox/GDrive

Prismatic CardMunch Kik/iMessage/SMS/GChat

I have been off the Evernote. And I'm still trying to find a to do list that fits my workflow. I

I'm reminded of Andrew Chen's post on Facebook DAU/MAU number http://andrewchen.co/2012/05/16/quora-has-facebooks-daumau-a...

Part of the reason that email is so sticky is that it has an incredibly high DAU.

davidcrow··on Atlantic Canadian Founders Deserve Better Than FAN (First Angel Network)
Disclosure up front.
davidcrow··on Atlantic Canadian Founders Deserve Better Than FAN (First Angel Network)
Working on it with vmfarms guys (we got 10x our high point traffic using hourly measure on this post) updating our infrastructure to be more resilient.
davidcrow··on Atlantic Canadian Founders Deserve Better Than FAN (First Angel Network)
I'm biased. Been a early team addition at a company that raised $500k from Celtic House in mid-00s. No fees on that raise. I have also raised from IAF, and from larger angel groups in the US. No fee as percentage of the transaction taken.

Currently at a Canadian VC - we don't pay brokers for early stage deals.

davidcrow··on Atlantic Canadian Founders Deserve Better Than FAN (First Angel Network)
I dislike the pay-to-pitch immensely. I think it is also the consulting fee and transaction charges on the capital raised. This is such a non-entrepreneur friendly way to facilitate early-stage capital. I can't believe that the "angels" or "members" are happy that 8% of the transaction goes to someone other than the startup.

Sorry, see previous comments about system configuration. I had removed WP-SuperCache. Have also upgraded memory and adding a varnish caching layer for future.
davidcrow··on Atlantic Canadian Founders Deserve Better Than FAN (First Angel Network)
Sorry, I messed up. My configuration was substandard this morning. Upgraded the memory available to the WP & MySQL instances. Turned on WP-Supercache. And adding a Varnish layer in front.
davidcrow··on Atlantic Canadian Founders Deserve Better Than FAN (First Angel Network)
Agreed. 100%.

It prays on desperate entrepreneurs that will do anything to keep their businesses alive. And it's wrong, for so many reasons.

davidcrow··on Atlantic Canadian Founders Deserve Better Than FAN (First Angel Network)
Sorry I turned off SuperCache to find a CSS/JS error. Forgot to turn it back on. Have moved DNS to CloudFlare.
davidcrow··on Don't blame the system aka there are no free lunches for founders
We need to break the culture of entitlement that seems to run rampant with Canadian wannabe founders. I'm tired of the broken record, "people won't fund me therefore there is no capital". There is no capital for shit ideas and even less capital for shit founders.
davidcrow··on 5 traits of the most successful entrepreneurs
@bwertz ranks as a 3 out 5 on his scale. Jeesh, this might be why I'm not a successful entrepreneur - I figure I score a 2 maybe a soft 3. Time to evaluate the missing pieces.
davidcrow··on How SaaS companies should manage their inside sales teams
I like the separation of folks that manage: prospecting for leads (sales development reps), following up with inbound leads (market response reps), closing deals (account executives), and maintaining accounts (account managers)

It fits my experience of the different skill sets necessary.

davidcrow··on The only barrier to entry you should care about
I'd forgotten how great this book is, and that it was published in 1998 is incredible. Time to re-read.
davidcrow··on The only barrier to entry you should care about
"Demand-side benefits of scale are the only important barrier to entry a web business can build up"

This is a great post. There was lots of thought previously that network effects could be built using vendor lock in (switching costs), first mover advantage (technological advantage), and preemption of scarce assets. Demand-side benefits of scale really are a preemption of scare assets, whether it is consumer attention or positioning in the app store. @bwertz has provided a great summary of why the rush for traction and the prevention of others that matter. #mustread

davidcrow··on Books all founders should read
I'd like to see "Getting to Yes" or "Getting Past No" in addition. I think both of these books are great at helping founders understand that negotiations are not zero-sum games.
davidcrow··on Alexis Ohanian interviewed after talk at Waterloo
I think a lot of the "startup hubs" are missing the need for a "top notch university". The ~4 year talent turn over and resupply is key, it provides an ongoing top up as talent churns. Does it work in startup hubs that don't have a "top notch technical university"?
davidcrow··on Blueseed or Canada?
Acquisition? Healthcare in Canada is managed provincially, so there are difference between each province. In Ontario, OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) covers a wide range of health services; however, it does not pay for services that are not medically necessary, such as cosmetic surgery.

OHIP is paid for out Federal Transfer payments and Ontario taxes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario_Health_Insurance_Plan

There is an external health premium (aka a tax) that maxes at $900 annually. OHIP generally costs about 10cents of every tax dollar spent in Ontario http://news.ontario.ca/mohltc/en/2012/05/a-real-wage-freeze-...

But it is accounted for in existing personal and corporate taxes.
