davidbyttow··on Show HN: IO – A minimalistic and anonymous editor
Hello!

IO is an experiment. It's a free, lightweight editor for creative and authentic publishing. ️

It's extremely easy to use and allows you to publish anonymously, under a pseudonym, or as yourself. Our vision is to make writing and sharing your thoughts easier than ever. The editor is a little rough around the edges, so be gentle (many improvements are on the way!). We plan to build on this idea in the coming weeks and months.

This is your blank canvas.

This project (started only a couple weeks ago!) is brought to you by a very small team. We have much more to come in the near future! Meanwhile, please email me at d@bold.io if you have any questions/suggestions or just want to talk product. :-)

Meanwhile, kick the tires at https://bold.io today, bookmark it for later and publish freely any time.

P.S., this link is fun: https://bold.io/random

davidbyttow··on Bold: Make Your Words Stand Out
Thanks for the heads up guys!

We spent a good amount of time compressing our blocking bundle size (html, JS, CSS), which actually is JS for the entire app, not just that page. Certainly have more work to do, but given the amount of code, our JS/CSS is pretty low.

I just compressed the large image and it dropped to ~430KB.

Meanwhile, the other large asset is the animated GIF, which I suppose we could switch to a looping webm/mp4. Was hard to reduce the GIF further and keep the same quality...

Where's Pied Piper when you need them?

It's not just routing. It hS to read modify write from DB first
davidbyttow··on Scaling Secret: Real-Time Chat
Clarified the 1MM number in the post.
davidbyttow··on Scaling Secret: Real-Time Chat
Your point is valid. This isn't ultra-high scale, just the name of the series I intend to publish more into. It's more about building a simple service for instant usage upon launch.

We also used Pusher for global in-app notifications, which had to scale past 1,000,000 concurrent connections.

Aside: 50000 concurrent requests on a single thread, huh? :) Unless I'm missing something, that's 50 seconds assuming a request takes only 1ms to process. Sounds like magic.

Come change what people share.

We've built a platform that brings more authenticity, self-awareness and empathy to the world. We've been the #1 app in Russia, China, Israel and Singapore and are violently growing.

We only hire builders and artists.

We are looking for another master iOS engineer to add to our team, and also frontend and backend engineers. We have massive scale and develop primarily in Java, Go, and Python.

We surround ourselves with people that make us better. We're not looking for people who count the hours at the office, but those who lose track of time in what they do best. We're building a product we truly love and want to build a team full of people who also love what they create every day. We’re currently a small team, which means you’ll own huge ideas from the very start.

davidbyttow··on Secret – Share anonymously with your friends. Speak freely
That was caused by a bad link in the recode article. The journalist fixed it.
davidbyttow··on The end of the Facebook era
I think FB is simply transitioning from product to utility, like electricity.

Just one example is its utility to sign up and log in to other services, which is 95%+ of my FB activity.

davidbyttow··on Effective Technical Leadership
Yes. It will.
davidbyttow··on Four Steps to Google, Without a Degree
Simple: I was honest and direct with them. I told them I had an opportunity that I could not pass up and had to put in two weeks.

In the end, I was savvy enough to know that the rate they were paying me to develop their sites and the amount they were paid was a huge margin.

davidbyttow··on Four Steps to Google, Without a Degree
TopCoder problems quickly become pattern recognition and that becomes (brain) muscle memory.

Knowing exact solutions to exact problems is not helpful.

davidbyttow··on Four Steps to Google, Without a Degree
Hard to quantify really. Often, it's not the exact knowledge that you use, but the byproduct of knowing something that helps you learn something new. For example, learning the nuances of a new language became much easier once I took a stab at implementing my own compilers.

I still had a LOT to learn, and Google is a fantastic place to soak up as much knowledge as possible. Mostly everything I learned about distributed systems came from Google.

davidbyttow··on Four Steps to Google, Without a Degree
As long as it's a multi-paradigm language. I'm not a huge Ruby fan, and you're right, Ruby at Google is almost non-existent. But I know a lot of developers like it, and a lot of companies look for it. So long as you master one of these languages and learn a couple others, I figured you'll be fine.
davidbyttow··on Always Be Coding – How to Land an Engineering Job
Intentional. The idea is that 1/1 could be a fluke. :-)
davidbyttow··on Always Be Coding – How to Land an Engineering Job
The idea is to get in the door. Unfortunately, the bouncer is extremely flawed and often gets it wrong. But once you're in, you should refocus on building things.
davidbyttow··on Always Be Coding – How to Land an Engineering Job
I had six years of experience in video games and was a hardcore C++ programmer. To be honest, I was surprised they called me.

Nowadays, showing a body of work speaks volumes. Show, don't tell!

davidbyttow··on Always Be Coding – How to Land an Engineering Job
I made it clear that this doesn't mean "applied to" but actually onsite interviews.

But your'e right, the ratio doesn't mean anything. ;)

davidbyttow··on Always Be Coding – How to Land an Engineering Job
Thanks! Fixed.
