david38··on Texas Attracted California Techies. Now It's Losing Them
Generally yes. It’s code for elective abortion.

Yes, there is the situation where conservatives try to get around open loopholes by saying “no abortion whatsoever” because liberals are always crying “but what about when the mother’s life is in danger?”. We all know what’s really going on.

Abortions happen people are careless or products fail. Americans can be quite careless in their use of contraceptives. I’ve seen it first hand.

Very few people use abortion as a primary method of birth control. It’s - if condoms fail, or she forgets to take her pill, or was raped, having to raise a whole child is a pretty massive consequence.

Personally, if I lived in Texas, I wouldn’t move either. I’d just get on a cheap flight out of state and get the abortion.

There are other things too though when conservative ideologies take over, two of them being the introduction of covert biblical teachings in public schools (teaching the “current debate” between creationism and evolution ) and a general dismissal of environmental stewardship.

david38··on Go or Rust? Just Listen to the Bots
Not true. Go is also made for this.

Node is awful with lots of connections. Go gives me way fewer bugs, easier to properly trace, static typing is a blessing, etc.

With a db that can handle thousands upon thousands of connections, Go trounced Node in my experience

david38··on ShotSpotter Keeps Listening After Contracts Expire
If they worked as advertised, it would be fine. You don’t just uniformly deploy such things. They’re not free.

But like you said, if they just detect loud noise, that’s a problem.

david38··on Ask HN: How do you store your knowledge?
Logseq
david38··on Who is hiring interns (April 2024)
This always means “physically in the USA”
david38··on Farmed salmon production leads to an overall loss of essential dietary nutrients
A better comparison would be to eat gazelle instead of lion and they would be correct. Feeder fish are still fish, which we are capable of digesting just as well.

We are not capable of extracting the same nutrients from grass as cows, or even gorillas.

david38··on Roku looks into serving you ads on whatever you plug into its TVs
Absolutely false.

I pay a pretty penny to not see ads. My daughters don’t either. Social discussion on school reveals they miss a LOT of ads.

david38··on Former University of Iowa hospital employee used fake identity for 35 years
Hospitals were closed with the release of new drugs that promised to treat mental illnesses. They didn’t deliver, but the hospitals were closed anyway.
david38··on Ask HN: Who's getting their job applications rejected?
It really makes you consider. “I want to do this job or this job is the most realistic one for me to get” instead of just buying tons of lotto tickets to get a google interview
david38··on Ask HN: Who's getting their job applications rejected?
Google limits you to three applications every 30 days
david38··on Apple TV+ Cornered the Market on "Prestige Dad TV"
Really? I thought Foundation was an embarrassment
david38··on Hackintosh is almost dead
I agree your first three paragraphs, but why won’t they want to continue to hack?

It was my obsession with worthless endeavors that got me the kind of job that made my time valuable in the first place

david38··on Scientists Discovered a 'Fear Switch' in the Brain, and How to Turn It Off
No joy, celebration of accomplishments, etc?
david38··on Dune: Part Two Is the Best Sci-Fi Film of the Decade
Just saw the movie.

Dune is far and away my favorite story.

The movie was absolute shit. I felt like I was watching a sterilized series of previews stitched together and called a “movie”.

I have never been so let down by a movie in memory.

david38··on AI hiring tools may be filtering out the best job applicants
I disagree. Of the thousands of resumes I’ve read in the last few years, none have been on paper.

They’re limited to one page by default because in the majority of cases, you should be able to convey your relevant experience of the last 10-15 years concisely.

If you cannot, because of your amazing experience, use more pages. Nobody will care. If you could have, but can’t see it, others will and will think you’re too wordy and toss your resume.

david38··on AI hiring tools may be filtering out the best job applicants
Correct, and he said interpersonal skills.

I’m an engineering manager and can see the difference like night and day and don’t give a damn about self promotion skills.

david38··on Cloudflare employee posts layoff call with HR and goes viral [video]
When a large company fires you, you usually get at least two weeks severance. This is better than notice. You get the notice and don’t even have to work.

When an employee quits, it’s expected they give two weeks notice.

This is rather balanced. Of course there’s the issue that you are 1/N * 100 percent of their workforce and they are 100% of your income.

david38··on The changing face of post-pandemic New York City
A large percentage of the population relies on school for childcare. No childcare = no work = no money. A large percentage of those families didn’t have elderly in the home or visiting. For them, in-person school was critical.
david38··on Figma and Adobe abandon proposed merger
“Everyone involved” includes customers
david38··on Why 3M stopped making floppy disks in the '90s
This is false. Phosphates were used to combat the effects of hard water, not to clean better.

Hard water can be dealt with easily with salt, 3-in-1 tablets, etc.

david38··on Tesla sues Swedish state agency over number plate blockage
Not sure you know what democracy is.

Tesla is required by law to use the post to get plates. This invalidates the whole premise.

david38··on [dead]
We allow female-only classes
david38··on Best Buy stores to stop selling DVDs, Blu-ray in 2024
The companies did it to themselves with the FBI warning. Ignorance of the law is already no defense.
david38··on A Woman Was Denied Medication for Being of 'Childbearing Age.'
Yes, and then they sue.

I agree with you about the disclaimer, but play out the situation-

Within a few years you will see a sharp rise in prescription of fertility-destroying drugs. At some critical mass, we will see lawsuits saying the drug companies find a drug that does X, but destroys the fertility of women and then just stops doing more research. This is similar to the development of the pill. It had nasty side effects for some, but not enough to economically justify more development until the law and massive public pressure came in.

david38··on USA's Most Successful Union Bankrupted
Without striking they have almost zero power.

It’s the same as a company that can’t fire anyone.

david38··on California’s math misadventure is about to go national
This isn’t true except for at the most extreme examples. Plenty of people have been promoted “out of the way”.
david38··on Whenever I buy things I try to prioritize cost per use
Buying cheap in the US is more often due to ignorance of the item, quality, and frequency of future use.

Even most poor people, when educated about certain products can afford the quality item or change their habits to not need the item at all.

david38··on Rupert Murdoch steps down as Fox and News Corp chairman
You might want to read a little more history
david38··on Boys and Men in the United States Are Struggling. The Left Should Talk About It
This is so full of crap it’s nothing but sheer fantasy.

Majority of male health issues?

By your own description you had a personally bad experience (sample of one) during childhood that you compare to your wife, someone you chose likely BECAUSE of your experiences during adulthood.

Your comparison is so off-base and sample size so small as to be meaningless.

david38··on Diamonds are losing their allure
Not weird. Literally how beauty is measured.

Symmetry and skin smoothness are markers of beauty. Too much and a girl looks like she’s had too much work done, or the photo is shopped.
