daveisfera··on New Mac mini, featuring M6 and M5 Pro
One of the things that Steve Jobs got very right was "and you can order right now". Announcements where you have to wait a month to order throw away all of the hype. Even allowing pre-orders and shipping later is a better idea and so silly that Apple has started walking away from that.
daveisfera··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
I agree but sadly that's eroding. They're starting to let advertisers into the walled garden and it's becoming too big for them to ignore it. That will only get worse and then one day Uncle Sam will walk in with a big check and things will change.

daveisfera··on 'Backrooms' Stuns with $81M Debut
That's a fascinating concept and interesting story but I didn't see it told in either the movie or the YouTube shorts. There's tons of little pieces you've referenced but neither really does more than just throw a bunch of stuff at the wall. Basically, my concern/complaint is that there's a lot of interesting concepts there and you could pull those threads for a long time, but now of it is really developed or delivered on in either the movie or the YouTube shorts.
daveisfera··on 'Backrooms' Stuns with $81M Debut
But they should do something. The first 1 hour or so was very well done and engaging, but then it just wraps up all of the sudden without digging into or addressing any of the topics they brought up. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. I'd say it was an interesting YouTube series of crazy ideas to watch as a few shorts, but not enough there to warrant a movie.
daveisfera··on 'Backrooms' Stuns with $81M Debut
I watched the YouTube series and didn't notice anything specific that it added or answered. It provided a bit more context about ASync, but that wasn't really a core part of the movie (or at least didn't actually answer anything other than they had discovered it and had been researching/experimenting with it). Is there something I missed?
daveisfera··on Ontario auditors find doctors' AI note takers routinely blow basic facts
But how accurate are humans? I just picked up a print out of medical history for the last 5 years and it was thick enough to be a book. There's no way a human is reading all of that and doing anything meaningful with it. Let an AI tool crunch on it and it will definitely get things wrong or jump to conclusions that aren't there, but it's quick and I can push back on those and then move to the correct answer far quicker than any meeting with a nurse or doctor will show any results. We need to focus on how to use these tools and push back on the parts that seem out of place or wrong, so we can do more rather than point out what's not perfect.

daveisfera··on What has Docker become?
There was probably a lot going on behind closed doors, but from the outside, it appeared that RedHat was trying to improve the security and technical details of containers, but Docker was just refusing pull requests and not playing nice. This eventually drove RedHat to make their own implementation (i.e. Podman), so it was a self created enemy and not necessarily one that was built-in/inevitable. I'm definitely not a fan of RedHat's moves since being acquired, but at least from the outside, this looked like Docker being arrogant and problematic and not a "RedHat problem".
daveisfera··on What has Docker become?
Arrogance was what actually killed them. They picked fights with Google and RedHat and then showing up at conferences with shirts that said "we don't accept pull requests" tipped the scales so that RedHat and Google both went their own way and their technology was now pushed out of 2 of their biggest channels.
daveisfera··on HP and Dell disable HEVC support built into their laptops' CPUs
I've been working with Intel to fix an issue in recent GPU drivers that prevents HEVC playback from working and I believe that's the real issue here rather than the licensing conclusion that this article jumps to.
daveisfera··on Whose code am I running in GitHub Actions?
I don't believe that's true. If you pin to a hash, then it will always run that version and can't change
daveisfera··on Cache from GitHub Actions breaking change
This feels like a very sudden abrupt change and breaking the build for all old branches/tags feels so odd for such a critical component of the build process for GitHub Actions
daveisfera··on M4 MacBook Pro
Once they get a MacBook Air with an M4, it will become a viable option for developers and other users that want/need 2 external monitors. Definitely looking forward to that happening.
daveisfera··on FDA clears first over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor
I haven't seen price info anywhere, but anyone have info on what that will be?
daveisfera··on Mounting your iPhone on your motorcycle can damage its camera (2022)
The sensor support added to watchOS 10 is really nice and the live displays of cycling stats in iOS 17 has made it so I can use my phone for stats and feedback while on bike rides
daveisfera··on The hidden cost of air quality monitoring
What’s your thought on that air quality monitor released by Amazon? I’d love to see the cost come down even more, but it looks like the most affordable option on the market right now
daveisfera··on Why bugs might feel “impossible”
The Brian Kernighan quote explains this very simply:

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

daveisfera··on Darling: macOS Translation Layer for Linux

daveisfera··on Docker suppresses news about alternate solution on macOS
I added a video with a demo of the performance benefits and describing in more detail where the prototype is at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/davejohansen/cider-cart... Also, I believe the fact that the issue from 2017 is still open with no real resolution is evidence that there may be value in an alternate approach like Cider Cart is presenting

Several other approaches have been posted about on that GitHub issue and others, so I thought letting people know about a potential solution would be ok...

daveisfera··on Apple: Apps should not require users to opt into tracking to access content
> (iii) Artificially increasing the number of impressions or click-throughs of ads, as well as apps that are designed predominantly for the display of ads.

So they're going to remove most of the games that my kids have been duped into installing from an ad in another game? ;p

daveisfera··on Python Wheels Crosses 90%

daveisfera··on NPM Is Joining GitHub
Neither side is announcing a price and NPM has been struggling financially for a while, so the likelihood that it was a "good exit" is low.
