davegardner··on Elevated Errors in Claude.ai
I hope they improve their incident response comms in the future. 2.5 hours with nothing more than "We are continuing to investigate this issue" is pretty poor form. Their past history of incident handling looks just as bad.
davegardner··on The mind of God? The problem with deifying Stephen Hawking
Surely we should add Mr Feynman to that list
davegardner··on Auction: David’s Personal KITT Knight Rider Car on Sale
David Hasselhoff is promoting it on Twitter so it is legitimate https://twitter.com/DavidHasselhoff/status/13454826542973132...
davegardner··on What happened after Portugal decriminalised all drugs? [video]
Don't bother with the video, there's very little information aside from the fact that in 2001, personal use of drugs was decriminalised and by 2009 they could see a drop in HIV infections, overdoses, and deaths.
davegardner··on Australia to produce seaweed cattle feed that reduces methane emissions by 80%
This is partially addressed in CSIRO's FAQ: https://research.csiro.au/futurefeed/faq/

In summary, FutureFeed is working with several external suppliers to establish production. They expect to be able to improve the crop production over time.

One thing of note is significant reductions can be achieved with quite a low ratio of seaweed in the feed. Specifically they report that recent feedlot trials demonstrated over 95% methane reduction with seaweed inclusion at 0.20% of OM in the ration.

davegardner··on British Airways faces record £183M fine for data breach
I suspect your comment is at least partly a joke, however the actual maximum fine possible is 4% or €20 million, whichever is higher.
davegardner··on Why do old books smell? [video]
I've heard the term biblichor used as a name for the smell of old books. This is derived from the words Biblos: book Ichor: the fluid that flows like blood in the veins of gods

This was inspired by the term petrichor.

davegardner··on Facebook won’t let you opt out of its phone number ‘look up’ setting
Facebook still operates as a business in the EU and can therefore be fined there. As a similar example, Google was fined €50 million earlier this year as a result of a GDPR violation.
davegardner··on Facebook won’t let you opt out of its phone number ‘look up’ setting
GDPR fines can be pretty significant. Google was hit with a €50 million fine in January.
davegardner··on UK engineers have completed the build of the novel Quantum satellite
The word quantum has been used as a synonym for quantity since the mid-16th century. Its use as a physics term is a much more recent development, which has definitely not fully replaced the original definition yet.
davegardner··on Recreating Lost Colors
From what I've discovered, it must be a Japanese Lacquer Brush. Traditionally these are made from the hair of pearl divers, "selected as the finest and densest fibre."[1] Another reference I found quotes that "They say that the salt strengthens the hair"[2]

davegardner··on Why Read the Classics? (1986)
I personally enjoyed (and was certainly impacted by) many of the books that I was forced to read during high school. The most memorable ones for me all fell into the "modern classics" category - To Kill a Mockingbird, Animal Farm, 1984, A Clockwork Orange, Lord of the Flies, Brave New World, The Diary of Anne Frank, and so on.
davegardner··on How Zildjian, a 390-year-old family business, avoids layoffs (2013)
The other option to cope with an extended period of lower revenue is to make sure you have enough cash in the bank to ride it out.
davegardner··on Keybase Exploding Messages
Yes this is correct. In fact even without a paid subscription you can access all files that have been added to a Slack through the web UI (myslack.slack.com/files). You can't see the related messages, but all the files (images, snippets, etc) are available as one big list.
davegardner··on America’s Teens Are Choosing YouTube Over Facebook
It's not just that their friends aren't on Facebook, it's also that their parents and grandparents are there.
davegardner··on Docker is a dangerous gamble
I've been using Docker on Windows for well over 2 years. It was certainly difficult setting it up on Windows in the old Docker Toolbox days (circa 2016), so perhaps the authors experience is from then.

Since the Docker for Windows client was released I've had no problems at all. (In the interest of full disclosure there were a couple of early beta issues that were quickly fixed, however that's to be expected).

davegardner··on Distributed architecture concepts I learned when building a large payment system
Yes it is - https://github.com/Microsoft/service-fabric
davegardner··on 85,000-year-old Finger Bone Complicates Understanding of African Migration
Well probably not as a joke, but it's within the realm of possibility that it was moved there at some point in the past. This is pure speculation of course, but perhaps it was identified as a sacred object and carried there by a traveller sometime within the last couple of thousand years. However the likelihood of that is probably quite slim.
davegardner··on You thought quantum mechanics was weird: check out entangled time
Presumably this could have some significant implications in regards to quantum computing.
davegardner··on “I Don't Like Your Examples” (2000)
In the books I've written I added references to movies that I liked as part of the examples. I remember including a "PC Load Letter" error message as a homage to Office Space. Other examples were more obscure, such an address or phone number of one of the characters in the movie.
davegardner··on Fructan, not gluten, induces symptoms in patients with gluten sensitivity
Ideally you should use FODMAP as an elimination diet to determine what food's you react to. I went though it a couple of years ago and discovered that onions (and large amounts of garlic) will give me IBS symptoms. I'm fine with everything else on the FODMAP list. I know others that have discovered they are sensitive to fruits such as apples, pears, etc.

I don't know anyone who has stuck to a strict FODMAP diet long-term.

davegardner··on How slot machines are designed to be addictive
That high percentage payout that you descibe is very misleading. There's an excellent description of this at http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-05-27/cummings---poker-machi...
davegardner··on Securing Microservices
I've done a fair bit of reading around policy-based authorization but have never heard of PADME. For the life of me I can't find anything about it in any Google searches. Can you point me at a reference for any information about it?
davegardner··on Milk that lasts for months
You can certainly use UHT milk to make cheeses that don't contain rennet such as paneer, ricotta, and quark. Some argue that you can't make good quality versions of these cheeses with UHT milk. From personal experience, I've made quark with UHT milk and it seemed pretty good quality to me.

I do get excellent results making yoghurt with UHT milk. It's also a simpler process as there is no need to heat the milk first before adding the starter.

davegardner··on How Australia is stubbing out smoking
'Curbing the epidemic: Governments and the economics of tobacco control'[1], World Bank, Washington DC, 1999, pp. 37–45 and C Gallet and J List, 'Cigarette demand: meta-analysis of elasticities'[2], Health Economics, 12/10, 2003, pp. 821–835.

According to a systematic review of studies of tobacco elasticities the average price elasticity for teenagers was -1.43 and -0.76 for young adults. As such, a 10% increase in tobacco price could be expected to decrease the tobacco consumption of teenagers by around 14%, and that of young adults by around 7.6%.

davegardner··on How Australia is stubbing out smoking
The revenue of taxes isn't specifically allocated in this way in Australia. Another way of looking at it, the federal government doesn't specifically dictate that x% of the health budget must be allocated to subsidising the healthcare of smokers vs non-smokers.
davegardner··on What's wrong with Software nowadays and how we can fix it
That may be true for children, but surely adults who have obtained a basic level of education should be able to decide for themselves.

Of course the question this leads to is "what is thr basic level of understanding that people should have in any given topic"?

davegardner··on What Neanderthals' healthy teeth tell us about their minds
I assumed they were referring to the diets of those humans that were alive at the same time as the Neanderthals.
davegardner··on It Costs $30 to Make a DIY EpiPen
In Australia it costs $38 (US $29) for a twin-pack of Epipens under our Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. We can also buy a single pen privately without prescription for $99 (US $75).
davegardner··on Why I’m giving my company Election Day off
In Australia it's only a $20 fine (approx US$15) for not voting.
