davegardner··on How crazy am I to think I actually know where that Malaysia Airlines plane is?
The punchline of this video is the fact that she thinks that the historical Jesus was white.
davegardner··on Tesla Motors Announces a New Home Battery
Yes it's not such a problem when it's just my 5 KW system. However here in Perth, Western Australia there are a lot of sunny days, so domestic rooftop solar systems are very commonplace now.

In my case there's some significant financial incentives to stay connected to the grid (I actually get a cheque from my power company for most of the year). That'll change in another 6 years time when this higher buyback rate expires, so I'll be looking very closely at whether I want to remain grid connected at that point.

davegardner··on Tesla Motors Announces a New Home Battery
The same issue exists with grid connected solar panels. My solar panels are designed to stop working whenever there is a power outage. This is a legally mandated requirement here and is very annoying when it happens on a beautiful sunny day.

A solar panel installer told me that if I add a battery backup to my installation, then at least it'll still charge the batteries during a power outage.

davegardner··on The benefits of light to moderate drinking might have been exaggerated
> I think this was something to do with the dark ages when in the western world, drinking water with alcohol was better than drinking water with bacteria and other pathogens.

I've read recently that this has been debunked. See http://leslefts.blogspot.com.au/2013/11/the-great-medieval-w....

Edit: As pointed out by thisjepisje, it was on HN - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9031856

davegardner··on Your lifetime earnings are probably determined in your 20s
My experience has been the opposite. I've taken a job working remotely from home in part so that I can be a bigger part of my children's day to day lives. I would probably be earning around 130-150% of my current salary if I'd stayed in my previous consulting job.
davegardner··on Your lifetime earnings are probably determined in your 20s
I don't think men and women would have equivalent salaries in the Mad Men universe.
davegardner··on At some startups, Friday is so casual that it’s not even a workday
Their leave actually looks pretty generous:

18 days (or 4.5 weeks) paid time off

1 week off for the holidays (in addition to paid time off)

davegardner··on The rise of fake engine noise
I expect there'll be a new set of businesses built up around custom engine noises. If the manufactures don't make it easy to load your own MP3, then you'll probably be able to take it to a car mod specialist.
davegardner··on The man with the golden blood
I'm a regular whole blood and plasma donor and I'm quite sure that I'd be much less likely to donate if I was being paid for it. I'm not really sure exactly why I feel that way, but I guess that if you put a dollar value on it I'd be calculating whether it really was worth my time. Right now, because there is no compensation (aside from a muffin and a cup of tea afterwards), I get the emotional benefits of having performed a purely altruistic deed.
davegardner··on How serious is the California drought? Before and after pictures
Years of lower than average rainfall have made this a necessity in WA.

We've now got two desal plants here that currently provide 27% of our supply. The supply drawn from dams now only makes up 33% of the total.

The plan is to transition to a 50/50 mix of desalination and underground sources (with groundwater replenishment) by 2030.

davegardner··on [dead]
Why didn't _you_ examine it more deeply before you posted wild conjectures about what was happening? Surely you could try it on another machine - or ask a friend or two to test it.
davegardner··on [dead]
Not reproducible for me either. Have you seen it happening on more than one machine?
davegardner··on If Carpenters Were Hired Like Programmers
No brown is the colour the wood was painted afterwards. In the context of this story, I'd say your platform is walnut.
davegardner··on Web Fundamentals: A handbook for best practices
That's not very helpful on a touch device
davegardner··on Bill and Melinda Gates Aren’t Leaving Their Kids Billions
The Foundation won't be around forever. Its been setup to spend all of its funds within 20 years of Bill and Melinda's deaths.
davegardner··on Zynga Buys NaturalMotion For $527M
Your choice of people to respond to doesn't do a lot to support your criticism. According to his profile cletus is originally from Australia, but now lives in NY and works for Google. I don't know him personally, but given his employer I'd hardly jump to the conclusion that he doesn't have any friends who work there.

>Honestly, I have a difficult time taking any developer who doesn't live here seriously

He's also got over 250k rep on SO, and 15k on HN, so there's more than a few other people who take what he says seriously enough.

davegardner··on Why I Will Never Go Back to the United States
Back in the late 90's the US was fairly high on my list of travel destinations. At the time I didn't have the finances to visit.

Because of stories like this, it's slipping so low on my list that I'll likely never get there.

davegardner··on The craziest date ever
I really think they should have taken a towel with them.
davegardner··on We Work Remotely – New Job Board from 37 Signals
A health insurance plan isn't much of a perk for many countries outside of the US that have universal health care.

In that scenario I wouldn't care if that was only available to in-country employees, the same way that I wouldn't care about missing out on perks like catered lunches.

davegardner··on We Work Remotely – New Job Board from 37 Signals
I'm in Australia and see the same results as ryanjshaw.
davegardner··on My self published book made $11,000 before I finished writing it
I couldn't agree more. The effort involved means the hourly rate is fairly dismal. But right or wrong it immediately establishes you as an expert and certainly stands out on a resume.
davegardner··on My self published book made $11,000 before I finished writing it
Sorry I can't get my hands on the sales volumes easily anymore. For us the royalties ranged from 5% and 15% depending on various conditions. For example:

- 12% from standard sales in the US and Canada,

- 5% from standard sales elsewhere,

- 5% from sales of the work at discounts of 56% or more,

- 10% from sales in electronic form,

- 15% from sales to book clubs, etc.

davegardner··on My self published book made $11,000 before I finished writing it
Interested to hear about his experience with traditional publishing.

$12,000 was the advance paid on the book that I co-authored and published through Wrox back in 2008 (and again in 2010). I think it took around 12 months to earn out the advance and start receiving additional royalties.

davegardner··on Australian opposition vows to implement Internet filter by default
Greens are a good option also. Scott Ludlam, a current WA Greens senator, was very vocal in opposing the previous censorship efforts.
davegardner··on Australian opposition vows to implement Internet filter by default
Just one of many good reasons to vote Greens in the senate.
davegardner··on The Deal That Makes No Sense
Elop only joined Nokia towards the end of 2010. Nokia was well and truly on their downward slide by then.
