daveed··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
> I don't anyone would find your squishy confidence it's worth 50% more than current value any more credible than shorters who think it's worth 50% less

It's not my opinion that TWTR is worth 50% more. Please don't understand it as such. It's an example of what someone long TWTR could be thinking when they simultaneously hold their position and want to reject the Musk takeover.

I don't think it's worth continuing this thread anymore though. Have a great day.

daveed··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
I don't believe in market efficiency.

The market is large and has plenty of participants with different strategies. There are people selling at the going price, and there are people who are not. The trading price is a good reference price, but it's not the "right price" for everyone.

daveed··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
Risk management?

I believe a lot of my long positions are worth more than their current price, doesn't mean I'm going to spend all my money buying them up to that price.

If I lock in a 20% gain today that's nice, but I might believe with high confidence that it'll rise 50% in the next year. Then Elon's bid doesn't move me that much.

daveed··on Web3: A VC-funded gig economy of securities fraud
> I believe many people who hate crypto are the ones that have a good life in a relatively non(or less)-corrupted government-led society, which might be a good reflection of HN demographics.

Maybe. I hear this a lot too. But as a counterpoint, I happen to live in the USA, and have a pretty good life. I know a LOT of people who have good lives in this relatively uncorrupted society who are going into web3. And who are funded by very well off people in said country.

I'm not saying that web3 can't help people in bad countries. It's that I don't think that's the end goal of a lot of this enthusiasm. Because I don't think those people were trying to help out people in your country before crypto existed (not verified, but I think this is a reasonable belief).

daveed··on I liked the idea of carbon offsets until I tried to explain it
I completely agree with you on avoided emissions. I think these should just not be counted. I just hope that going forward, people don't lump all carbon offsets into one bucket and say "they're all a scam". I feel like we need more regulation here.
daveed··on I liked the idea of carbon offsets until I tried to explain it
I've looked into this area. I agree with the author that current sources of carbon offsets are poor and sketchy. However, that's not to say that people aren't working on more promising methods. Direct air capture and growing and sinking seaweed are two things that I think definitely pass the additionality aspect.

A big problem, I think, is that the market doesn't really differentiate between these, and that there are no strong regulatory pressures to buy "good" credits. We don't have a carbon tax in the US, and we don't have anything that pressures companies to say, if we want to buy offsets, that we only buy "good" offsets.

To people who say we need to move off fossil fuels - yes, but how do we do it? We can't just move our physical processes from A to B process.

It seems to me that imposing economic costs for every extra unit of carbon emitted, and only allowing high-quality offsets to subtract that, is the best incentive to move forward.

daveed··on Show HN: A Chrome extension for fast, contextual notetaking
Cool, thanks!

I'll get search working at some point. It looks like simplenote doesn't have an API, but there's just a native copy button that'll copy both your notes and the reference sections, to your clipboard.

daveed··on IPCC’s starkest message yet: extreme steps needed to avert climate disaster
Construction, energy, food production, and citizen transportation, are huge sources of emissions that absolutely occur on local soil.
daveed··on Stanford prof calls police after whistleblower exposes $5000/hour gov. contacts
He has 7k followers as of now, and probably gained a large # of them because of this tweet (which is his most circulated tweet). It's not "his" Twitter mob.
daveed··on 25+ years of personal knowledge management
I definitely agree with "letting go of the past". Notes and memories are important, but so is managing what you keep. Otherwise it becomse untenable.

Anyway, I made a show HN today, but it's kind of relevant (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30917504). I made a notes extension for taking notes quickly and in the moment, before you decide to keep it or that you're done with it.

daveed··on Google Domains is out of beta
It looks like a lot of people here are unhappy with this. I'll add a voice as someone who recently used Google Domains and had a pretty good experience.
daveed··on Ask HN: How do you keep track of daily tasks
I have a "monthly log" google doc that's always open in my browser (it's tab#2). At the top of each day's entry, I just have a list of TODOs for the day. Below the TODOs are the running thoughts I have as I'm getting stuff done. Every day, yesterday's undone TODOs get copied to today's, and there's a different section for long-term TODOs. This means I see my tasks every day and I can make things as done (bold/unbold) pretty easily.

(Not to assume that something similar will work for you, but basically accessibility and making sure I see my TODOs every day is pretty helpful for me to remember to do them)

daveed··on 6 months of working at a hypergrowth startup
I think if we're speaking honestly, we're only going to have so much patience for the author's blogposts. We're not going to upvote updates for 6, 12, 18, 24 months at a hypergrowth startup. So I do think it makes sense to prefer a source filter.
daveed··on Worldle
My reading of it is that it's easiest to program if they just ask google maps the latlon of the country and use that. It's a lot more work to base it off the closest border.
daveed··on A simple system I’m using to stay in touch with hundreds of people
I do the same thing. I keep a text file with friends' names and from time to time check it too.
daveed··on Tell HN: GitHub is down (Update: Back online now)
Looks down to me :(
daveed··on Ask HN: Why the obsession with note taking?
I totally agree. I feel like as information workers we especially feel the pain of memory. I know mine has been more strained since I've grown older, and I'm just looking for apps to help offload it. I'll add that I think that the working memory part gets hurt on a day-to-day thing, because multitasking, tabs, and the sheer amount of "stuff" hurts my ability. I think most apps do a pretty good job at long-term memory, but there's still some problems with retrieval, and I just "have to learn" the best way of finding that doc I wrote where I described process X. Probably with better NLP things will get better, but they're not there yet.

*Slight plug. I built a side project that tries to get at the early stage of the "working memory" part. I do a lot of short-term remembering during the day - taking calls, reading docs, or flipping between tabs. I made this chrome extension that adds notepad in your tab, so you can toggle, make scratch notes, toggle off, before you commit stuff to your notion/google doc/etc.

daveed··on Re: Moxie on Web3
I don't understand why this author is talking about bitcoin, when Moxie's article was about web3. I thought Moxie's article was more about what has happened with the ecosystem, versus what could happen.
daveed··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
How to Avoid a Climate Disaster - by billg

From my level of background knowledge, it was really well-written. He talks about how to think about emissions, and breaks down global emissions into its biggest categories (eg. transportation, electricity generation, etc). As well as promising methods for decreasing emissions in each of these classes. I think the style would really suit a HN audience.

daveed··on India seeks to block most cryptocurrencies in new bill, government says
> Most of the world suffers from hyper-inflation at worst and inflation at best. Not everyone lives in the USA/Europe and has access to good banking and investment options.

Real question - you mention earlier to "follow the demand". Is there evidence that demand for crypto is coming from countries with unstable banking?

daveed··on The truth about lab-grown meat [video]
If the carbon footprint is less, I can see a lot of Millenials and Gen-Z-ers wanting to. We are, I believe, "regular people" as much as you are.
daveed··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?
I made this chrome extension to help with inline replies for gmail:

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/reformat-gmail-inl...

It's basically a compressing of the copypaste+"quote-button" thing that people do. I reply inline quite a bit, so I've found it useful.

Just made this too (and am pushing a quick update soon) - it tracks how much time you spent on each chrome tab, and when you hit Alt-T it gives you your tabs, sorted approximately by time spent recently, so you can find your place better. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/historia/hfibppfil...

daveed··on Show HN: Papercups – Open-source alternative to Intercom
For what it's worth, I've been using Papercups for my projects for a few months and it's been super easy. Love it.
daveed··on Open source projects should run office hours
You can do either, my own link is (https://booktime.xyz/p/david-chen) if you'd like. You can also just sign up on the top right.
daveed··on Open source projects should run office hours
Hi! If you're thinking of giving office hours for your project... I've been working on a site (http://booktime.xyz/) that's meant for this. It's like a calendly where you can manage different meeting types more easily, they can be paid or unpaid, and we keep your contact private. Feel free to email me at (david@booktime.xyz) too. We've been polishing it up, and I'm happy to take feedback.
daveed··on These breakthroughs will make 2021 better than 2020
It sounds like you are cynical? He's pledged the vast majority of his money to charity, and he's working on important problems. I haven't listened to him in interviews (is it a tone you're picking up?), but in the things he writes his focus seems very much in the right direction. The investments in vaccines (https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/bill-melinda-gates-foundat... ?) seem to be made by his foundation, and I can't tell if it's to the companies themselves or to fund distribution and operational costs (which would be free money for the world). Is there more to this?
daveed··on First person receives Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine in UK
> Second in line for the jab at University Hospital in Coventry was 81-year-old William Shakespeare from Warwickshire

His high priority must've been on purpose, right?

daveed··on Ask HN: Please stop writing tutorials/tech articles on Medium
That's true. Though, I'll also say that my experience and expectation from medium articles and SO are different too. Medium lends itself to more end-to-end stories (here are the steps, combining these 3 libraries, to accomplish this task), whereas SO feels like it's more focused (Why does this part of my toolchain break?). The upvote/downvote mechanism also doesn't really lend itself to tutorials. I feel like if you wanted tutorials on SO, you'd want to branch SO itself into a different entity.
daveed··on Ask HN: Please stop writing tutorials/tech articles on Medium
Why not hackernoon or any other blogging platform, then? Stackoverflow is gatekept, not super friendly, and you can only share things in response to people's questions.
