davecardwell··on Things You Might Not Know about jQuery
You don’t need that jQuery parameter (in fact, I think that makes it invalid JavaScript). ie.

  jQuery(function($) {
    // your code using $
  });
You might be thinking of the recommended method of creating a closure, in which the code is executed immediately rather than upon page load:

  (function($) {
    // your code using $
  })(jQuery);
davecardwell··on Dropbox (YC S07): Simple Tasks for Extra Space (768MB total)
Ah, whoops. I wouldn’t have posted it here if I had known it wasn’t ready for public consumption. I think I came across it on a LifeHacker posting.
davecardwell··on Dropbox (YC S07): Simple Tasks for Extra Space (768MB total)
I’d love to see a write-up of your experiences with this page once it’s been up for a while (assuming your corporate masters would allow it).
davecardwell··on Dropbox (YC S07): Simple Tasks for Extra Space (768MB total)
Ah, sorry—that’s my fault. I didn’t check if you could access the page when not logged in.

Basically they offer a number of options to get some extra free space for their service. Giving them some feedback, linking your Twitter and/or Facebook accounts, and posting about why you “love Dropbox” on your Twitter / Facebook account once authorised.

davecardwell··on Dropbox (YC S07): Simple Tasks for Extra Space (768MB total)
I connected but they didn’t post anything until I used their “Tweet about Dropbox for more free space!” button.

Presumably I could just delete their access now I’ve got my free space but I haven’t tried that.

davecardwell··on Dropbox (YC S07): Simple Tasks for Extra Space (768MB total)
I thought this was a clever way of incentivising people to authorise Dropbox to access their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

I don’t suppose I would normally have posted to my Facebook wall about Dropbox, nor my Twitter account, but now I have.

Presumably the cost to Dropbox is quite minimal (768MB extra free space in total). It’s made me think about ways in which we could offer similar incentives at $dayjob.

davecardwell··on Using MySQL as a NoSQL - A story for exceeding 750,000 qps on a commodity server
Interesting… I didn't bother searching for a previous discussion as I was under the impression that when you submit a URL that was already submitted you were simply taken to that page and upvoted it.
davecardwell··on Using MySQL as a NoSQL - A story for exceeding 750,000 qps on a commodity server
There are a couple of comments on the original article that mention this:

PostgreSQL supports C-based UDF so it might not be impossible, but I'm not sure whether PostgreSQL has a standard/documented/safe way to access to internal data structures from UDFs.

…and…

Yoshinori-san, very interesting! We use a similar technique for our site together Postgresql. We have our own Software ODBA that writes SQL, marshals the data and puts the marshaled Data into the PGsql-DB. All of our data is always in the memory if the Application is running. ODBA is written in Ruby. You can find it here: http://scm.ywesee.com/?p=odba/.git;a=summary

So maybe?

“Our correlation data shows that H1 tags do not carry the same ranking weight that we had originally presumed.”

If their research is correct, this is likely to have little to no effect on your search rankings anyway.

Have you considered adding RSS feeds on the search result pages, or would this not fit in with your eventual business model? It would certainly make me use the service at any rate.

Between http://www.dslreports.com/ and http://www.voip-info.org/ you should be able to find all the information you need.
davecardwell··on 13% of international calls now go via Skype
You should generally find that we’re cheaper to most countries than Skype too, with equal or better quality.

Do you consider video to be a must-have feature? It’s something we could look into supporting since it’s all just SIP to us.

davecardwell··on 13% of international calls now go via Skype
Hi Jach. I work for Localphone, so it’s nice to see us mentioned here! We are definitely cheaper than Skype to most destinations - on a crude country-by-country basis we’re cheaper to at least 95% of countries.

If you weren’t aware, Localphone-to-Localphone calls are free too when using VoIP.

davecardwell··on Microformats: Boon or Bane?
The “stars” and other bits of data that make their way into Google’s search results come under their umbrella term, “Rich Snippets”. You can specify them as Microformats or RDFa and they currently look at information about reviews, people, products, and organisations.

davecardwell··on New [GoogleBot] User Agent for News
Together with http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=971785 it looks like they’re taking the newspaper industry’s concerns seriously.

Somehow I suspect this won’t be enough for some but it will be interesting to see which publications adopt these measures.

davecardwell··on Ciao Python, Hola Go
The Parrot VM [http://www.parrot.org/] has been discussed here before: [http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=552850]

Projects like this might help, but I suspect there will always be someone willing to port a library to be native.

davecardwell··on Ciao Python, Hola Go
On the upside, this gives you the ability to be the one that implements and open-sources some of the later heavily-used libraries and to carve a name for yourself in a burgeoning Go community.

This would hopefully lead on to job opportunities down the road.

davecardwell··on CKEditor 3.0, formerly known as FCKEditor, released (WYSIWYG editor)
There is a “notes on the new name” section on the linked article:

“For years we have been fighting with a relatively important issue with FCKeditor. While its quality has been strongly accepted, its name brought us troubles, mainly inside English speaking countries. The fact is that the initials of Frederico Caldeira Knabben have an unfortunate match with the most used English bad word.”

davecardwell··on Apple broke a lot of its developer reference urls... again.
You can actually. I can’t find a link now, but I’m pretty sure it’s actively encouraged so as not to clutter up the CPAN with obsolete versions of modules.

That’s why we have things like http://backpan.perl.org/
