dave4420··on Homeless people to be given cash in first major UK trial to reduce poverty
No there shouldn’t, because then e.g. charities providing help to seriously ill cancer patients won’t be able to employ anyone.

Edit: I’m not against charities doing this where it makes sense. I wouldn’t want it to be more red tape they had to struggle with though.

dave4420··on Ask HN: Will more people leave cities due to satellite internet in rural areas?
I can get satellite internet in the city. Why would I move to the sticks to get satellite internet?
dave4420··on Liberalism Is the Rebellion Now
September 11th and the Western response to it had more to do with it. Tech companies didn’t change police behaviour, and they didn’t change laws. Those seem a greater influence on the situation.
dave4420··on The Early Christian Strategy
> the leading ideology of the 21st century thus far appears to be a hyper-Christian bleeding-heart liberalism

I would love to hear the reasoning behind this claim. Perhaps it rests on a different meaning of the word “leading” than I am expecting.

dave4420··on Ask HN: Why No Discussion on HN
Job ads for YC companies have comments disabled, yes.
dave4420··on MicroStrategy Has Stock to Sell
I don’t know what headline you’re seeing, but “MicroStrategy Has Stock to Sell” is the headline I’m seeing.
dave4420··on Ask HN: What bad things happened when FIIs withdrew from a country?
What is “FII” in this context?
dave4420··on It's time to scrap the tube zones
How would this affect season tickets?
dave4420··on Ask HN: Should people who only watch movies or TV shows once avoid teaching?
If you’re good at teaching, you’ll care more about the differences in the kids from year to year, surely?
dave4420··on Ask HN: Should people who only watch movies or TV shows once avoid teaching?
Don’t worry, the politicians keep changing the rules of what to teach and how: no two years are the same.
dave4420··on Ask HN: Should people who only watch movies or TV shows once avoid teaching?
If you get lots of repetition in your day job, wouldn’t you want lots of novelty in your spare time?
dave4420··on Go does what RxJS couldn't
I take issue with the article’s assertion that Go isn’t imperative.
dave4420··on The Blowout No One Sees Coming
Re your reason 4: the hardest part of political polling is working out who will actually vote. If your polls are going to get judged on their similarity to the final result, you want to filter out the people who won’t vote.
dave4420··on Ask HN: If the NSA offered free backups, would you use them?
If it’s via an NSA app I have to download, then hell no.

If they provide dumb file storage, so I can write my own script to compress and encrypt stuff before uploading via a standard protocol, then maybe? Other backup services are available, as they say, but they’d either be paid or (probably) sketchier.

dave4420··on Putting Data Centers in Space Could Reduce Their Carbon Footprint
In fairness, a space data centre could power itself from solar 24/7 without batteries (if you’re ok with downtime over the equinox).

I share your scepticism overall though.

dave4420··on Putting Data Centers in Space Could Reduce Their Carbon Footprint
> space data centers would require the development of a launcher 10 times less emissive over its entire lifecycle to significantly reduce carbon-dioxide emissions

Well. Is that plausible?

dave4420··on Using Yq in GitHub Actions
When I want to know whether something is pre installed on gh actions, I go to https://github.com/actions/runner-images , click through to the image we use, and Ctrl+F for the software I’m interested in. If it’s installed, it will tell me which version is installed.

If you’re getting your runner from someone other than gh, you’ll have to check with them instead.

dave4420··on Why daylight saving time has not stopped yet in Europe
(2021)
dave4420··on Ask HN: Am I doomed to always work at startups now?
The recruiters who are messaging you can’t all be internal recruiters. Explain to external recruiters why you’re looking for a slight change of direction and ask if they have something more suitable for you.
dave4420··on WFH overall is less productive. Let's face the truth
It’s strange. At a previous job I was 100% wfh. At my current job I am 20% wfh and 80% in office.

Pretty sure my wfh days now are less productive than when I was 100% wfh.

I think it’s just that I find it harder to build up and maintain habits for just one day per week.

dave4420··on Why Doesn't Microsoft Do Their Own Linux Distro?
I don’t understand what MS would get out of releasing their own distro?
dave4420··on EU considers calculating X fines by including revenue from Musk's other firms
Given that Tesla software engineers were sent in to assess Twitter’s codebase after Musk bought it, plus all the shenanigans around Musk’s pay package from Tesla, surely the EU would be justified in including Tesla as well? (Assuming you grant the logic of treating all these companies as a sort of unbundled conglomerate.)
dave4420··on Ask HN: Will parenting become mandatory, like jury duty or military service?
If you force people to be parents, that feels like it would not lead to a great outcome for the children.
dave4420··on Ask HN: Will parenting become mandatory, like jury duty or military service?
Why would anyone want to make parenting mandatory?
dave4420··on It's time we stop using JavaScript Date
Hard agree on not using JS Date, but why not use Temporal API?
dave4420··on Ask HN: Why is bad grammar tolerated on social media given recent AI advances?
What’s so bad about bad grammar?

Sure, I’d prefer it if people didn’t use bad grammar, but here are some things that are higher priority:

- keeping spam off the platform

- keeping harassment off the platform

- keeping porn off the platform (unless you’re a porn social network, I guess, in which case you need to keep child porn off your platform, which in context is a harder problem)

- keeping sock puppets / psychops / etc off the platform

Also, I wouldn’t like it if people were prevented from posting due to bad grammar, and I wouldn’t like it if people were forced to rewrite their posts because of bad grammar. If people want to opt in to having their grammar corrected, then great, but don’t force it on them.

dave4420··on Ask HN: Why are many mathematicians not interested in computer programming?
Why are many computer programmers not interested in mathematics?

Are they bad at mathematics or do they just not like it?

dave4420··on Nut bans do little to help allergic air passengers
Broken link
dave4420··on Ask HN: How do you transport telepresence robots as quickly as people?
You don’t, you dial into one of your employer’s telepresence robots that’s already in the office?

This is how it works with phone calls, why should telepresence be different?

dave4420··on How Prediction Markets Have Turned American Politics into a Casino
This would be a stronger article if it talked about other countries’ experience with political betting.

During the UK’s general election earlier this year, there was a scandal because some Conservative insiders had used inside information to bet on the date of the election. But I’m not aware of any case where the betting has driven the politics.
