dauertewigkeit··on Denmark Aims a Wrecking Ball at 'Non-Western' Neighborhoods
Would you therefore be in favour of putting the Amish and the Mennonite communities in re-education camps?
dauertewigkeit··on Denmark Aims a Wrecking Ball at 'Non-Western' Neighborhoods
That's for them to find out. Employment status is probably a big one.

I was just on holiday in south eastern Europe in a resort town where the workforce was entirely composed of the same kind of immigrants, and none of these immigrants were "integrated" by this standard. But there was no criminality. Maybe because all of them were gainfully employed and felt like they had a future.

That's just one example.

My point is, there is a false equivalence being exercised here. Just because somebody is not integrated by whatever arbitrary standard, does not mean that they are prone to engage in criminal activity.

dauertewigkeit··on Denmark Aims a Wrecking Ball at 'Non-Western' Neighborhoods
If Americans emigrated in droves to Denmark they would also fail to integrate, (although they would face less racism from the locals) and they will also prefer to socialize with their own, retain their own American customs and cultural identity and fail to learn Danish. But all of this is irrelevant. Failing to integrate, by this measure does not lead one directly towards the criminal underworld. There are a few steps in between that are being ignored, and this "failed integration" is being used as a red herring.
dauertewigkeit··on Germany to Pass Japan as Third-Largest Economy, Helped by Weak Yen
So, should one screen immigrants and only allow queer flag waving liberal progressives from SF in, or what is exactly your point? Many Germans would also not qualify if those were the requirements.

Isn't all of this stuff verging on thought policing?

dauertewigkeit··on Germany to Pass Japan as Third-Largest Economy, Helped by Weak Yen
I think that would qualify as ethnic cleansing to some extent, and don't think it would be moral. At the very least countries should be very upfront about their intentions if that is their plan. Imagine if you had to emigrate to China and was forcefully interned in a re-education camp...

Looking at the US, it does just fine integrating different cultures from all over the world. All the problem ethnicities in Europe are gainfully employed model citizens in the US. One should maybe ask what is going wrong in Europe before resorting to extreme measures.

Wealth is wealth, and if you do not own a house and do not have 450k € extra in the bank compared to the home owner than you are poorer, literally.
dauertewigkeit··on Germany to Pass Japan as Third-Largest Economy, Helped by Weak Yen
And it is 100% Germany's fault. Many of these people could be gainfully employed if not for Germany's beurocracy. I was abroad recently, in South Eastern Europe, and was amazed to see that in some countries there are people working who have no command of the local language, and no command of English either, and communicated in single words and with hand gestures, and they probably did not have valid work permits either. But they were working, gainfully employed and doing their job well enough. The same job (in a bakery) would require a three year trade education in Germany.

My experience is that moving countries is very hard and you sound like you only have nebulous reasons for doing so, and it will probably not end up being a wise decision. Especially if you live in a big country, and you are escaping your past, doesn't it make more sense to move cities, instead? That is also hard enough in itself.
dauertewigkeit··on Thiel's Unicorn Success Is Awkward for Colleges
$100k to drop out of a top university, for a gifted person who could make the most out of that environment, does not actually sound like a good deal. Does it come with additional funding down the line?

Those same people would have no problem raising $1M+ in funding when they complete their 4 year degree and decide on building a startup, no?

dauertewigkeit··on Germans shrug off economic gloom at booming Oktoberfest
Because old people run the country. That is even worse than us having to pay for them. Old men are scared of their own farts and that is not good for the future of a country. We don't want to be stuck living in the late 20th century but that is where all these old people steer the country towards.
dauertewigkeit··on Germans shrug off economic gloom at booming Oktoberfest
Germany will very likely never catch up technologically to the US. We aren't going to have the Germany equivalent of Open AI anytime soon, or the equivalent of Tesla or Space X. So if you care at all about being on the winning team, it's probably not going to be Germany or even anywhere in Europe. You'd have to choose between the US or China and South Korea.
dauertewigkeit··on Germans shrug off economic gloom at booming Oktoberfest
What is ridiculous is that a "refugee" who burns his papers gets all that help. Then at the same time I had students who had to leave Germany because they did not find a job in time after their masters. These students have worked throughout their stay here and even payed into the system but were deemed either too foreign or too rich to get any financial assistance while searching for a job.

Germany is a weird place where if you play by the rules you get a very harsh treatment but if you cheat the rules you can get a lot of free shit.

dauertewigkeit··on Germans shrug off economic gloom at booming Oktoberfest
I honestly do not see how the two things are related. Spending 15€ once instead of 8€ once is not really a sign of anything. You can do that even as an unemployed person on Bürgergeld.

What is worrying about the German economy is also not the current inflation but the long term outlook: the energy prices that will never be competitive, the 20 years of technological lag within almost all industries due to lack of investment and extremely risk averse financial climate, and the ever aging population, which now Germans are starting to realize, won't be so easily solved by immigration, neither illegal nor legal.

dauertewigkeit··on ROCm is AMD's priority, executive says
With all this hype about CUDA, I have recently started looking into programming CUDA as a job as I love that kind of challenge, but to my dismay I found that these tasks are very niche. So it is not even that people are routinely writing new CUDA code. It's just that the current corpus is too big and comprehensive for alternatives to compete with.
dauertewigkeit··on Ask HN: Why don't more middle-class Americans emigrate to Europe?
Your post is the most on point. The culture is way too different and especially for this community it should be obvious: the risk averse culture, the pessimism, the crabs in a bucket mentality and the relative lack of economic opportunities, especially in IT.
dauertewigkeit··on Making Military Service More Attractive for Modern Spouses
Academia is just as hostile. It is even a stated policy that you are supposed to move countries between your undergrad (up to masters), Ph.d, multiple postdocs, all the way until you get tenure, to the point that some specific funding schemes require this. At the same time and without even a single bit of irony, they advertise a family friendly environment and a women first hiring policy.
dauertewigkeit··on Knot theory [video]
A mathematical knot is a knot with the two ends brought together. So they are real knots as well.

There is less oversight when it comes to pesticide usage within smaller operations. I grew up in that environment so I can tell you from first hand experience that the grandfatherly figure selling you pumpkins on the side of the road is does not shy away from using pesticides, and unlike the big operations he is not very precise with this dosage either.
dauertewigkeit··on ‘Less than half’ fresh produce sold globally makes any profit
If that is the economist's conclusion than I'd rather kick the economist than take his advice.
dauertewigkeit··on ‘Less than half’ fresh produce sold globally makes any profit
Cheap food prices are a very good thing. The farmers who are struggling are the ones with unsustainable business models. The answer for them is to join forces. Small time farming is a not viable anymore and it benefits nobody to try to keep it going. Most of these small timers are also way outdated in their knowledge and methods.
dauertewigkeit··on ‘Less than half’ fresh produce sold globally makes any profit
Once you see the amount of food waste you start feeling cheated. Like, you pay top dollar for some greens and then you see tons of the same exact greens being dumped in a dumpster at the end of the day. The food itself is not worth the price you are paying for it. It's the service and the logistics that you are paying for. If everybody paid the dumpster price the supermarket would fail. It would be cool if there were business models where this was made more explicit.
dauertewigkeit··on Graph Neural Networks use graphs when they shouldn't
In my use case I care not one bit about the overall graph structure, but only about the inter-node interactions/relationships. But often times you will get graphs where you have 1% type A interactions, 12% type B interactions and 87% type C interactions and that makes training quite challenging. But I am not sure if you can stay that that is over-fitting the graph structure rather than simply learning the most common interactions in the dataset.
dauertewigkeit··on Nvidia's 900 tons of GPU muscle bulks up server market, slims down wallets
> Is there really no way to partition the workload to run with 16gb memory per card?

It depends on the model architecture you are using. Once you cannot fit a single instance of your model on a single GPU or at minimum on a single node, things start becoming very complicated. If you are lucky and you have a generic transformer model, you can just use Deepspeed with their transformer kernel. But if you have another architecture it will likely not be compatible with Deepspeed or Fairscale or any of the other scaling frameworks and you will end up having to write your own CUDA kernels.

So the per GPGPU RAM is quite important.

dauertewigkeit··on I digitalized Berlin's registration form

We could have premium exclusive busses. Still a better solution then everyone being carried individually in their own private vehicle. Also think of the networking possibilities!
dauertewigkeit··on Germany Will Force 80% of Gas Stations to Install EV Chargers
To be fair, Germany economy was already fucked, but the energy transition is accelerating the inevitable. Germany is the last of the industry-based economies in Europe and this while simultaneously being the country with the highest energy prices. That situation was never going to last. The energy prices will remain high for many decades even if a successful energy transition might bring them down eventually, so industry has been relocating outside of the country anyway. The transition to EVs has only made matters worse. A lot of German industry is being made redundant. And Germany in 2023 is still skeptical of the digital age and a service based economy. So yeah, the future is not bright either way.

But what the government is doing is partly ideology based and partly, I believe, the personal ambition of the economy minister himself. I think the American approach is much more sane and they will probably still end up being the global leaders of green energy tech.

dauertewigkeit··on In Germany, 27 are in 'preventive detention' b/c they might do climate protests
Germany is currently bankrupting itself and possibly destroying its economy to go forward with the green transition. You need a reality check. I actually don't believe that we could do more than we are already doing.
dauertewigkeit··on In Germany, 27 are in 'preventive detention' b/c they might do climate protests
To say that the police will protect you is not accurate. The police are a preventative institution. They try to maintain order and reduce the incidence of crimes and act as a deterrent for those who would otherwise commit a crime. But they aren't a condom around violence. If somebody wants to hurt you, they can, and you're mostly on your own. They will only be brought in to investigate the case later, and maybe catch the perpetrator. It is kind of funny how we Europeans are brought up with this illusion of safety, believing that the police are some kind of superhero characters that will spring to action the second before we get knifed or shot.
dauertewigkeit··on In Germany, 27 are in 'preventive detention' b/c they might do climate protests
Yeah, well life is not so simple. Everyone would like to see a green energy transition, but we still need energy to power our everyday life and we need it also at a reasonable price. Protesting without providing alternatives is futile and counter-productive.
dauertewigkeit··on Germany Will Force 80% of Gas Stations to Install EV Charging, Too
You are quite right. A typical German gas station has nothing to offer somebody who is going to stay there for 30 minutes. Their little shop is usually overpriced and beyond that there is usually a place to pump your tires and to wash your car and little else.

Chargers in the parking lots of supermarkets would make much more sense. And indeed that is already where the chargers are to be found. This is a case of the market outsmarting the stupid bureaucrats.
